somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or
experiences that could be shared with our readers. The Neighborhood of the Month will
highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to
hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special. City of Frisco Related Question of the
Week: Q. Is there any specific
building code regarding the installation of light fixtures
(incandescent or fluorescent) in closets? If so, is there
someplace on-line where I may view the code? A. Light fixtures in closets
are regulated by the International Residential Code and the
National Electric Code.
This Day in History – May 22, 1843:
Great Emigration departs for Oregon From the History Channel… A massive wagon train, made up of 1,000
settlers and 1,000 head of cattle, sets off down the Oregon
Trail from Independence, Missouri. Known as the "Great
Emigration," the expedition came two years after the first
modest party of settlers made the long, overland journey to
Oregon. After leaving Independence, the giant wagon
train followed the Sante Fe Trail for some 40 miles and then
turned northwest to the Platte River, which it followed along
its northern route to Fort Laramie, Wyoming. From there, it
traveled on to the Rocky Mountains, which it passed through by
way of the broad, level South Pass that led to the basin of the
Colorado River. The travelers then went southwest to Fort
Bridger, northwest across a divide to Fort Hall on the Snake
River, and on to Fort Boise, where they gained supplies for the
difficult journey over the Blue Mountains and into Oregon. The
Great Emigration finally arrived in October, completing the
2,000-mile journey from Independence in five months. In the next year, four more wagon trains
made the journey, and in 1845 the number of emigrants who used
the Oregon Trail exceeded 3,000. Travel along the trail
gradually declined with the advent of the railroads, and the
route was finally abandoned in the 1870s. May is National Mental Health Awareness

have produced this very popular e-newsletter that goes out every
week to over 40,000 people and businesses which keeps the Frisco
community in touch with local events and businesses. About Erika Lafata: Erika Lafata has
long been involved in her community and with volunteer work.
After winning her local Lions Club charity contest during

time, she was given the license for four years to produce a
local preliminary to Donald Trump's Miss USA©/Miss Teen USA©

has the distinct honor of having two local winners win the
highly competitive Miss Texas Teen USA© competition title
back-to-back in 2001 & 2002, with one eventually becoming 3rd
runner up to Miss Teen USA© 2001. Erika has judged, been a
coach/mentor to contestants, emceed and consulted numerous

potential has always been a passion of hers. How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community
Newsletter in Your Spam Filter: With the advent of outrageous volumes of
unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it’s
unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not
being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications.
There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing
industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering
when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email. While we applaud the anti-spam industry for
removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our
mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications
are mistaken as unwanted. Sometimes, this results in our mailings
bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to
challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering.
However, due to the size of our list, it’s nearly impossible for
us handle the volume of such requests. To that end, please realize that we want
our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable
information that this community newsletter delivers. If you currently use an anti-spam program
or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add
this newsletter to your “safe” or permitted email sender list.
This usually involves simply adding our sending address (FromJ
to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This
is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the
email addresses of
matt@mattlafata.com and
matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to
be removed from this list, please send an email to
matt@mattlafatamarketing.com and simply put the words REMOVE
in the subject line. |

outlook on the world and enables them to dream of possibilities.
Our camp allows the children to live in a family environment, if
even for a short time. One of the best outcomes of our camp is
that these children are exposed to American families, increasing
their chance, as well as all older orphans' chances, of being
adopted once the families see how wonderful the kids really are! We are now accepting applications for host
families. We will be accepting up to 10 families for this camp,
on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Stacy Zonis
at zonisfamily@tx.rr.com
asap for more information. Trails

Thunder Flag Football Tournament June 7-8 Offers Added
Incentives:
How many flag football tournaments have you
been in where you line up against former NFL and Arena Football
League players or get a chance to play pro football if you win? The inaugural Frisco Thunder Ultimate Flag
Football Challenge will offer both those incentives when the
two-day tournament begins play June 7, 2008 at the Colony Five
Star Sports Complex, 4100 Blair Oaks Drive, The Colony, Tex. Not only are bragging rights and a trophy
up for grabs, the winning team will take on an All-Star squad
led by former Minnesota Vikings WR Jake Reed – The Thunder’s
owner – and Head Coach Troy Esprit -- who spent a decade
playing arena football -- in the finale game of the Challenge. “If you want to be a Pro, you must first
beat a Pro,’’ Esprit said. “Just because we’ve haven’t been on a
field in a few years doesn’t mean all our skills are gone. We’ll
give you a great game, and a great experience that other flag
football tournaments don’t provide.” Esprit has another ulterior motive –
finding talent for next year’s team. Tournament MVPs get an
invitation to the Intense Football League team’s 2009 training
camp – no fees or tryouts. “You never know where you’re going to find
players,’’ Esprit said. “I’m fortunate enough to be a great
football market where talent is available. If a player shows me
something, I’m going to give him an opportunity.” Members of the winning team receive season
tickets for the Thunder’s 2009 season opener in the renovated
DeJa Blue Arena in the Dr Pepper Star Center and will be
introduced at the home opener. Team pictures and action
photography as well as complete coverage of the entire
tournament will be highlighted on the team’s web site at
www.friscothunderifl.com. The tournament format will be 5-on-5 with
arena football rules. Each team can have as many as ten players
ages 15 years or older. The entry fee of $250 per team (maximum
of 30) includes t-shirts. For more information, contact (972)
731-6968 or e-mail
coachspree@yahoo.com. Sponsorship opportunities are
available as well. The Thunder (5-2) plays the Odessa
Roughnecks (2-2) Saturday at 7:11 CST in Odessa. Fans can listen

descendents of the common river carp which is found all over the
world. However, the specimens you will see at our show have been
selectively bred in Japan for more than 200 years, evolving into
the beautiful varieties that you see today. Some of the koi grow
to over 3 feet in length! Keep

for the stage by Joseph Robinette. Produced by speical arrangement with
Dramatic Publishing, Woodstock, IL Sponsored in part by The McKinney Arts
Commission and Target The Children's Literature Association named
this "the best American children's book of the past two hundred
years," and Joseph Robinette, working with the advice of E.B.
White, has created a play that captures this work in a thrilling
and utterly practical theatrical presentation. All the
enchanting characters are here: Wilbur, the irresistible young
pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who
understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the
gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed;
the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and, most of all, the
extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be "a true friend
and a good writer." Determined to save Wilbur, Charlotte begins
her campaign with the "miracle" of her web in which she writes,
"Some pig." It's the beginning of a victorious campaign which
ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most
important to Charlotte. Starring Katie Cline (Frisco) as Charlotte,
and Philip Jones (Little Elm) as Wilbur, with Amy Miller
(Prosper), Brooke Bennefield (Prosper) Lacy Jones (Little Elm)
and Ken Yunker (Frisco) rounding out this talented cast. FCT
Announces the 2008-2009 season!:
After much delay Frisco Community Theater
is excited to announce the 2008-2009 season. All of our performance will be in the Cox
Building Playhouse thanks to the generous support of Plano
Stages and the City of Plano. We look forward to seeing
you there! Bullshot Crummond - October 10th-
October 26th 2008 This parody of low budget 30s detective
movies typifies British heroism. Teutonic villain Otto von
Brunno and his evil mistress crash their plane in the English
countryside an d kidnap Professor Fenton who has discovered a
formula for making synthetic diamonds. Bullshot Crummond is
called to the rescue. Otto paralyzes Crummond with a fiendish
ray. He rams a stick of dynamite in Crummond's mouth which will
explode when the next person enters the room. Rosemary enters,
but the static electricity in her fur wrap averts the
detonation. They pursue in a hair raising car chase, but plunge
over a cliff. They sneak into the dungeons where the professor
is being tortured, but Crummond hopelessly loses the ensuing
saber duel. Unperturbed, Crummond finally triumphs by shooting
the rest of the cast.
Jacob Marley is dead and condemned to a
hellish eternity. To escape his own chains, he must first redeem
and reform Scrooge and get him to open his heart. An irreverent,
funny and deeply moving story. Talk about a time-proven audience-pleaser!
"Try To Remember" a time when this romantic charmer wasn't
enchanting audiences at New York’s Sullivan Street Playhouse.
“The Fantasticks” is the longest-running musical in the world,
and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry
and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity
that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless
fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the
same time.

adult contemporary station in America that played Christian
music. To celebrate the country and soldiers that served in the
Gulf War, the station decided to host a free concert and aptly
named it Celebrate Freedom. On July 4, 1991 the first-ever
Celebrate Freedom took place at Williams Square in Las Colinas,
Texas, drawing over 3,000 fans. In 1996 the event was moved to
Southfork Ranch in Parker, Texas, to accommodate the
ever-growing and enthusiastic audience. Interstate Batteries partnered with 94.9
KLTY in 1997, and together the two have ushered Celebrate
Freedom through several stages of development. Celebrate Freedom
1999 was the first time in the event's history that it did not
take place on the Fourth of July. Because July 4th was on a
Sunday, the station and its partners wanted to be respectful of
the Lord's Day. On Saturday, July 3, 1999, Celebrate Freedom
became one of the largest events in America with an estimated
114,000 people in attendance. Future events would take place on
the Saturday before the Fourth of July. The event continued to
grow, and Celebrate Freedom 2001 was broadcast nationwide on to
6.5 million homes – providing all of America an opportunity to
experience this "relatively unknown" event - which drew a crowd
of over 200,000 people that year.

Town of Addison Announces Addition
of New Event – WORLDFEST:
WORLDFEST is the Town of Addison's newest
public event in spectacular Addison Circle Park. The festival,
Saturday, October 25, is being hosted in partnership with the
non-profit DFW International Community Alliance (DFWI)
organization. I-35E
Frontage Road Traffic Switch to Occur in Dallas and Ellis
Counties:
The Texas Department of Transportation
(TxDOT) will begin changing the direction of the two-way
frontage roads on I-35E, between Parkerville Road in DeSoto and
US 77 south of Red Oak, into one-way frontage roads Tuesday, May
27 at 9 a.m. The change will involve re-striping the
pavement and placing additional signs to alert and direct
motorists to the new, one-way condition. Work will begin with
the west frontage road (southbound) and upon completion will
proceed to the east frontage road (northbound). It is
expected that each roadway will take a full day to convert. “This is an important part of the project
since it will improve the safety along the frontage roads, at
the ramp junctures and access points,” said Bill Pierce, P.E.,
TxDOT’s Ellis County area engineer. “Both frontage roads will be
switched to one-way traffic operation at the same time to
minimize confusion and to help drivers adjust to the new traffic
pattern.”
The frontage road reconfigurations are part
of a larger, $62 million I-35E widening project. Once complete,
I-35E will be six-lanes wide, three lanes each direction, and
will include wide shoulders and bridges to accommodate future
lanes. The project contractor is Ed Bell Construction Company,
of Dallas. |
