Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. Is there any specific building code regarding the installation of light fixtures (incandescent or fluorescent) in closets? If so, is there someplace on-line where I may view the code?

Specifically, I’ve heard a builder state they could not install a fluorescent light in a non-walk-in closet (due to some restriction in the building code).

A. Light fixtures in closets are regulated by the International Residential Code and the National Electric Code.

Incandescent lights must have completely enclosed lamps with a minimum clearance of 12 inches from any storage space. Fluorescent lights must have a minimum clearance of six inches from any storage space.

This Day in History – May 22, 1843: Great Emigration departs for Oregon

From the History Channel…

A massive wagon train, made up of 1,000 settlers and 1,000 head of cattle, sets off down the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri. Known as the "Great Emigration," the expedition came two years after the first modest party of settlers made the long, overland journey to Oregon.

After leaving Independence, the giant wagon train followed the Sante Fe Trail for some 40 miles and then turned northwest to the Platte River, which it followed along its northern route to Fort Laramie, Wyoming. From there, it traveled on to the Rocky Mountains, which it passed through by way of the broad, level South Pass that led to the basin of the Colorado River. The travelers then went southwest to Fort Bridger, northwest across a divide to Fort Hall on the Snake River, and on to Fort Boise, where they gained supplies for the difficult journey over the Blue Mountains and into Oregon. The Great Emigration finally arrived in October, completing the 2,000-mile journey from Independence in five months.

In the next year, four more wagon trains made the journey, and in 1845 the number of emigrants who used the Oregon Trail exceeded 3,000. Travel along the trail gradually declined with the advent of the railroads, and the route was finally abandoned in the 1870s.

About Erika Lafata:

Erika Lafata has long been involved in her community and with volunteer work. After winning her local Lions Club charity contest during her Senior year of high school for her numerous achievements during her high school career, Erika volunteered as the contest director for the next 9 years. During that same time, she was given the license for four years to produce a local preliminary to Donald Trump's Miss USA©/Miss Teen USA© state preliminaries, Miss Texas USA© & Miss Texas Teen USA©. She has the distinct honor of having two local winners win the highly competitive Miss Texas Teen USA© competition title back-to-back in 2001 & 2002, with one eventually becoming 3rd runner up to Miss Teen USA© 2001. Erika has judged, been a coach/mentor to contestants, emceed and consulted numerous like-competitions. Working with women to develop their potential has always been a passion of hers.

Erika was a charter member and former Vice President and twice Past President of the Bay City Coastal Lions Club, where she also served on the District 2S-4 Governor’s Cabinet in Publicity/Marketing. She spent a lot of time traveling around the state speaking to various groups about the humanitarian causes of Lions Clubs International.

Professionally, Erika has had a career in the media for 18 years, including newspaper writer, photographer & managing editor; in radio as on-air talent (DJ) for 6 years in the Houston and southeast Texas area, as well as radio ad sales & promotions for 5 years; in cable TV ad sales and production for 8 years; and as talent, lending her voice & face to scores of radio & television commercials & industrial films locally to internationally. She has worked for clients such as Kroger, Foley’s, Oshman’s, Sakowitz, Pier One Imports, and Academy Sports & Outdoors.

Erika has been recognized in the radio & television industries a number of times for her sales accomplishments, including being the Dallas local market recipient of the 2003 Comcast Spotlight’s President’s Club Award, and was named the 2004 CBS Radio President's Award Winner for the Dallas radio market’s six stations.

Erika moved to Frisco in May, 2002 from Bay City, Texas. For many years she was a church minister back in her hometown and at St. Francis of Assisi in Frisco as a Lector, and also on the Diocesan level, serving on the Youth Ministry Resource Team. Additionally, she is the past Secretary of the American Women in Radio & Television Dallas-Ft. Worth Chapter, & past member and Ambassador of various Chambers of Commerce. Additionally, Erika is proud to be a graduate of the Frisco Citizens Police Academy Class 20.

Erika is passionate about helping other businesses grow, and draws from her 18 years of diverse media experience to help find effective marketing solutions for them. She currently works for a cable advertising rep firm in Frisco, is on her second term to serve on the advisory board for the National League of Junior Cotillions—Frisco Chapter, and is the Public Relations/Marketing Co-Chair for the Boys and Girls Club of Collin County Chrysalis Ball 2008. Additionally, Erika is a former winner and now holds the Texas franchise license (Mrs. Texas) for the prestigious Mrs. United States® competition for married women. This spring will mark the 4th year she has produced it, with families coming from all over Texas to experience what Frisco has to offer. It doubles as a fundraiser, having given money to charities such as the Cancer Monument Fund and Autism Speaks. (Her nephew, Luke, is autistic.)

Erika has three sons, ages 15, 10 and 4 who keep her very busy with their respective activities, including baseball, soccer, basketball, and cooking classes. Combining all of that with Matt’s three children (ages 15, 13 and 8) and their activities makes for a very busy (and fun!) household!

Something interesting about Erika's family is that she also has five younger brothers, and grew up as the oldest and only girl. This is exactly like Matt's daughter, Kaleigh, who heads their six kids as the oldest and only girl! Additionally, Erika was born on her mother's birthday and Kaleigh was born on Matt's birthday.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it’s unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it’s nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your “safe” or permitted email sender list. Dear Friends,

This week’s newsletter is Proudly Sponsored by DeBonair Custom Cleaning. They are looking for new employees so check out their sponsorship below. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

This is a community newsletter, YOUR community newsletter, and as such, I want to encourage you to send me community events as well as write-ups about people or groups who should be recognized and/or commended for what they do or have done. This is a newsletter about Frisco for all of us to play a part in. It is designed to bring our community closer together so please submit stuff to me at any time. It is also an economic tool for our community where businesses have the opportunity to advertise their products and services to people who want to hear about them.

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 40,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.

DFW Family Hope Int’l Seeking Host Families for Summer 2008 Orphan Camp:

The non-profit group Family Hope International is seeking host families for a group of orphans coming to the Frisco area in July 2008 for summer camp. The purpose of camp is to provide Ukrainian orphan children ages 6-15 an experience of a lifetime in a fun and educational environment. The camp provides these children with a whole new outlook on the world and enables them to dream of possibilities. Our camp allows the children to live in a family environment, if even for a short time. One of the best outcomes of our camp is that these children are exposed to American families, increasing their chance, as well as all older orphans' chances, of being adopted once the families see how wonderful the kids really are!

We are now accepting applications for host families. We will be accepting up to 10 families for this camp, on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Stacy Zonis at zonisfamily@tx.rr.com asap for more information.

Thunder Flag Football Tournament June 7-8 Offers Added Incentives:

How many flag football tournaments have you been in where you line up against former NFL and Arena Football League players or get a chance to play pro football if you win?

The inaugural Frisco Thunder Ultimate Flag Football Challenge will offer both those incentives when the two-day tournament begins play June 7, 2008 at the Colony Five Star Sports Complex, 4100 Blair Oaks Drive, The Colony, Tex.

Not only are bragging rights and a trophy up for grabs, the winning team will take on an All-Star squad led by former Minnesota Vikings WR Jake Reed – The Thunder’s owner – and Head Coach Troy Esprit --  who spent a decade playing arena football -- in the finale game of the Challenge.

“If you want to be a Pro, you must first beat a Pro,’’ Esprit said. “Just because we’ve haven’t been on a field in a few years doesn’t mean all our skills are gone. We’ll give you a great game, and a great experience that other flag football tournaments don’t provide.”

Esprit has another ulterior motive – finding talent for next year’s team. Tournament MVPs get an invitation to the Intense Football League team’s 2009 training camp – no fees or tryouts.

“You never know where you’re going to find players,’’ Esprit said. “I’m fortunate enough to be a great football market where talent is available. If a player shows me something, I’m going to give him an opportunity.”

Members of the winning team receive season tickets for the Thunder’s 2009 season opener in the renovated DeJa Blue Arena in the Dr Pepper Star Center and will be introduced at the home opener. Team pictures and action photography as well as complete coverage of the entire tournament will be highlighted on the team’s web site at www.friscothunderifl.com.

The tournament format will be 5-on-5 with arena football rules. Each team can have as many as ten players ages 15 years or older. The entry fee of $250 per team (maximum of 30) includes t-shirts.

For more information, contact (972) 731-6968 or e-mail coachspree@yahoo.com. Sponsorship opportunities are available as well.

A Dog Show for Fish June 7 & 8, 2008:

An Outdoor Festival-Style Event centered around:
Water Gardening
Koi Show, Auction & Exhibits

Show hours are:
Saturday 10am to 6pm
(Fish auction at 4pm on Saturday)
Sunday 10am to 3pm

Actually, it is a judging and exhibition of Japanese Fish called Koi. Koi is the Japanese word for Carp. Nishikigoi, another often used term, means fancy or brocaded carp. Yes, these beautifully colored and patterned fish are descendents of the common river carp which is found all over the world. However, the specimens you will see at our show have been selectively bred in Japan for more than 200 years, evolving into the beautiful varieties that you see today. Some of the koi grow to over 3 feet in length!

In our Koi show you will see all of the more popular varieties and some of the more unique varieties. The "big three" are Kohaku, a white koi with a red pattern; Sanke, a white koi with red and black pattern; and Showa, a black koi with red and white pattern. Among these big three, you will also find Tancho versions which have only one red marking, a single red crown on its head, similar to the Tancho Crane - so highly revered in Japan.

Koi shows are held all over the world. There are small club shows like ours for the Dallas area, or larger regional or international shows that attract thousands of fish. Although many people consider them beauty pageants, the purpose of a koi show is to have your fish judged against fish in the same variety (and size) to see which more closely match the "ideal". Some of the judging criteria used are shape or conformation, skin quality and luster, and overall balance of pattern and color. Prizes are awarded in all categories. There are several official bodies that provide specifically trained judges to officiate these shows.

Frisco Square is being renamed "FrisKoi" Square for the weekend and there will be Retail booths, Garden and Bonsai displays, raffles, auctions, kids and family activities and Vendors from all parts of the country and our local Frisco community providing information on Water Gardening, Koi Ponds and caring for Koi fish - called "Living Jewels".

Based on the story by E.B. White.  Adapted for the stage by Joseph Robinette.

Produced by speical arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Woodstock, IL

Sponsored in part by The McKinney Arts Commission and Target

The Children's Literature Association named this "the best American children's book of the past two hundred years," and Joseph Robinette, working with the advice of E.B. White, has created a play that captures this work in a thrilling and utterly practical theatrical presentation.  All the enchanting characters are here: Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and, most of all, the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be "a true friend and a good writer." Determined to save Wilbur, Charlotte begins her campaign with the "miracle" of her web in which she writes, "Some pig." It's the beginning of a victorious campaign which ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most important to Charlotte.

Starring Katie Cline (Frisco) as Charlotte, and Philip Jones (Little Elm) as Wilbur, with Amy Miller (Prosper), Brooke Bennefield (Prosper) Lacy Jones (Little Elm) and Ken Yunker (Frisco) rounding out this talented cast.

ABOUT CELEBRATE FREEDOM

In 1991, 94.9 KLTY was the only mainstream adult contemporary station in America that played Christian music. To celebrate the country and soldiers that served in the Gulf War, the station decided to host a free concert and aptly named it Celebrate Freedom. On July 4, 1991 the first-ever Celebrate Freedom took place at Williams Square in Las Colinas, Texas, drawing over 3,000 fans. In 1996 the event was moved to Southfork Ranch in Parker, Texas, to accommodate the ever-growing and enthusiastic audience.

Interstate Batteries partnered with 94.9 KLTY in 1997, and together the two have ushered Celebrate Freedom through several stages of development. Celebrate Freedom 1999 was the first time in the event's history that it did not take place on the Fourth of July. Because July 4th was on a Sunday, the station and its partners wanted to be respectful of the Lord's Day. On Saturday, July 3, 1999, Celebrate Freedom became one of the largest events in America with an estimated 114,000 people in attendance. Future events would take place on the Saturday before the Fourth of July. The event continued to grow, and Celebrate Freedom 2001 was broadcast nationwide on to 6.5 million homes – providing all of America an opportunity to experience this "relatively unknown" event - which drew a crowd of over 200,000 people that year.

I-35E Frontage Road Traffic Switch to Occur in Dallas and Ellis Counties:

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin changing the direction of the two-way frontage roads on I-35E, between Parkerville Road in DeSoto and US 77 south of Red Oak, into one-way frontage roads Tuesday, May 27 at 9 a.m.

The change will involve re-striping the pavement and placing additional signs to alert and direct motorists to the new, one-way condition. Work will begin with the west frontage road (southbound) and upon completion will proceed to the east frontage road (northbound).  It is expected that each roadway will take a full day to convert.

“This is an important part of the project since it will improve the safety along the frontage roads, at the ramp junctures and access points,” said Bill Pierce, P.E., TxDOT’s Ellis County area engineer. “Both frontage roads will be switched to one-way traffic operation at the same time to minimize confusion and to help drivers adjust to the new traffic pattern.”

The frontage road reconfigurations are part of a larger, $62 million I-35E widening project. Once complete, I-35E will be six-lanes wide, three lanes each direction, and will include wide shoulders and bridges to accommodate future lanes. The project contractor is Ed Bell Construction Company, of Dallas.
