Here is a photo of Erika and I at the
Boys and Girls Club of Collin
County Chrysalis Ball in November. It was an amazing,
first-class event topped off with entertainment from The Pointer
Sisters. If you are not familiar with BGCCC, they provide more
than 3,800 area children and teenagers with a safe place to
learn and grow in the vulnerable hours between school and home.
They are the only option in Collin County for many children
seeking to have fun and participate in developmental programs in
an affordable, safe and nurturing environment and the Chrysalis
Ball is their major fundraiser. What was really unique about
this event was they had a VIP Red Carpet with kids from all five
BGCCC branches acting as paparazzi snapping up fun photos of
attendees as we arrived on the red carpet. Kudos to BGCCC
President Christina Alford, her staff, and the many sponsors and
volunteers who made it such an amazing event, raising an
unprecedented $933,000! Erika and I are big supporters of the Boys
and Girls Club of Collin County and of children’s causes in
general. This newsletter and information source is
designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by
providing coverage of so many things going on in our community.
There are so many amazing things in this newsletter, as there
are every week. Please forward this newsletter to all your
friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive
it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no
citizen should be without this important information at their
fingertips. Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this
list as a more informed society is a more functional society. If you have questions or have any community
events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising
events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and
shared with more than forty thousand residents and businesses in
Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send me an
email so I may
include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need
materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if
you want something to be included. If you received this from somebody else and
would like to be added to the list, just send me an
email. Your
email address will never be sold or given to anybody else for
any reason. All newsletters can also be found on our web site at

Hockaday, CPA – Today’s Tax Talk From Joe Frisco 2008 Mayoral Race My company has been producing this
newsletter since 2001. It has become a labor of love for me and
such an important part of the fabric of the Frisco community –
something I am very proud of. On a personal note, I feel extremely
blessed that I have been able to serve our great city as a City
Council member for almost six years. My term will expire in May
of 2008 however, and as many of you know, I will be running for
Mayor in the May 2008 race. There is still so much for us to
accomplish together and I want to help lead this city in the
right direction for many years to come. As we head into 2008, this column will
appear from time to time with updates on our campaign. As with
any part of this weekly newsletter, you can simply choose to
ignore this section if Frisco politics is something you don’t
have an interest in. For those interested, I just wanted to give
a quick update. First of all, I
want to thank everybody for their continued support of our
campaign for Mayor of Frisco. We’ve avoided events in November
and December for several reasons. One is that most people just
aren’t thinking about the May Mayoral election at this time and
it’s really not a time for campaign events but rather a time to
spend with your friends and family as you enjoy the holiday
season. We will kick our
campaign into high gear some time after the first of the year
and I want to thank all of my supporters for their undying
support and dedication in talking about the campaign whenever
possible. This is our city and we need to all come together as
one voice for Frisco’s future. While Frisco is a very diverse community in
so many ways, one of my goals will be to embrace the diversity
and make sure everybody feels welcome and has equal opportunity
to be involved in building a new and better Frisco. When I took
the oath of office as a City Council member back in 2002, that
oath became my commitment to serve this city and its people, all
of its people, in the best way possible. It was also a promise
to God to keep faith above all in every decision and action I
take. If I am fortunate to become the next Mayor of Frisco, I
will serve no one race, no one religion, no one cause, no one
group, and no one interest
There is only one Frisco – our Frisco, and together, we
will make it better than ever. We will have
lots of events over the next five months leading up to our
Mayoral victory in May. I will use this column to keep you
updated of upcoming events. One other note,
people have been asking who else is going to run for Mayor in
the next election. The filing deadline is March 10 so we won’t
know until then. Thank you for
listening. Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of
the Month Details If you have a citizen or neighborhood
you would like to nominate, please send it to me. The Citizen of the Month will focus
on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another
individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has
recently done something special that contributes to the
well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be
somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or
experiences that could be shared with our readers. The Neighborhood of the Month will
highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to
hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special. City of Frisco Related Question of the
Week: Q. Is there any city
ordinance about Flood Lights in the back alley ways shining into
windows? There is an issue in my alley way with multiple flood
lights flooding light into my back windows. A. The City of Frisco
Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance provides requirements for light
trespass in certain districts. For additional information,
please contact Code Enforcement at (972) 292-5302 or e-mail
code@friscotexas.gov. This Day in History – December 29, 1890:
U.S. Army Massacres Indians at Wounded Knee From the History Channel… On this day in 1890, in the final chapter
of America's long Indian wars, the U.S. Cavalry kills 146 Sioux
at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. Throughout 1890, the U.S. government
worried about the increasing influence at Pine Ridge of the
Ghost Dance spiritual movement, which taught that Indians had
been defeated and confined to reservations because they had
angered the gods by abandoning their traditional customs. Many
Sioux believed that if they practiced the Ghost Dance and
rejected the ways of the white man, the gods would create the
world anew and destroy all non-believers, including non-Indians.
On December 15, 1890, reservation police tried to arrest Sitting
Bull, the famous Sioux chief, who they mistakenly believed was a
Ghost Dancer, and killed him in the process, increasing the
tensions at Pine Ridge. On December 29, the U.S. Army's 7th cavalry
surrounded a band of Ghost Dancers under the Sioux Chief Big
Foot near Wounded Knee Creek and demanded they surrender their
weapons. As that was happening, a fight broke out between an
Indian and a U.S. soldier and a shot was fired, although it's
unclear from which side. A brutal massacre followed, in which
it's estimated almost 150 Indians were killed (some historians
put this number at twice as high), nearly half of them women and
children. The cavalry lost 25 men. The conflict at Wounded Knee was originally
referred to as a battle, but in reality it was a tragic and
avoidable massacre. Surrounded by heavily armed troops, it's
unlikely that Big Foot's band would have intentionally started a
fight. Some historians speculate that the soldiers of the 7th
Cavalry were deliberately taking revenge for the regiment's
defeat at Little Bighorn in 1876. Whatever the motives, the
massacre ended the Ghost Dance movement and was the last major
confrontation in America's deadly war against the Plains
Indians. Conflict came to Wounded Knee again in
February 1973 when it was the site of a 71-day occupation by the
activist group AIM (American Indian Movement) and its
supporters, who were protesting the U.S. government's
mistreatment of Native Americans. During the standoff, two
Indians were killed, one federal marshal was seriously wounded
and numerous people were arrested. December is Seasonal Depression
Awareness Month:
So far this month we have covered AIDS
Awareness, Identity Theft Prevention, Universal Human Rights,
and Safe Toys/Gifts Awareness… Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also
known as winter depression, is an affective, or mood disorder.
Most SAD sufferers experience normal mental health throughout
most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the
winter or summer. The condition in the summer is often referred
to as Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder. For more information,

would like a city official at, just to be available to answer
any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits,
he would love to attend. Answering Questions for Kids and Young
Adults: As you know, communication and sharing
information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I
frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young
adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the
project involves getting these questions answered from somebody
in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m
always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or
daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure
for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have
them contact me directly. Alternatively, if your child is interested
in learning more about city government and has questions, feel
free to contact me. Finally, if you are looking for a speaker
to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government
or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something. All the opinions, endorsements or

Collin County Since 2001, Matt and his marketing company
have produced this very popular e-newsletter that goes out every
week to over 40,000 people and businesses which keeps the Frisco
community in touch with local events and businesses. In July 2007, Matt announced his bid for
Mayor of Frisco in the May 2008 election. Visit
www.matt4mayor.com for
more information about his candidacy. How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community
Newsletter in Your Spam Filter: With the advent of outrageous volumes of
unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's
unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not
being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications.
There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing
industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering
when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email. While we applaud the anti-spam industry for
removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our
mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications
are mistaken as unwanted. Sometimes, this results in our mailings
bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to
challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering.
However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for
us handle the volume of such requests. To that end, please realize that we want
our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable
information that this community newsletter delivers. If you currently use an anti-spam program
or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add
this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list.
This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:)
to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This
is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the
email addresses of
matt@mattlafata.com and
matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to
be removed from this list, please send an email to
matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends, This week’s newsletter is Proudly Sponsored
by BayGrill and their New Year’s Eve menu. Erika and I
really enjoy dining at BayGrill and highly recommend it. Also
check out the Spotlight on HRchitect and their current job
openings here in Frisco. HRchitect is an HR strategy and
technology consulting firm and is looking for a part-time
Accounting Manager and a part-time Marketing Coordinator. A lot
of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly
appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them
wherever possible. It’s hard to believe that 2007 is almost
behind us. It has been an amazing year for me personally and
professionally and from my family to
yours, we hope you have had a
very joyous, safe and blessed holiday season and here’s to a
great 2008 for all of us! This is a community newsletter and as such,
I want to encourage you to send me community events as well as
write-ups about people or groups who should be recognized and/or
commended for what they do or have done. This is a newsletter
about Frisco for all of us to play a part in. It is designed to
bring our community closer together so please submit stuff to me
at any time. If you have a business, restaurant or a
service and are interested in advertising and reaching

business, promote an event at your place of business and is the
most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment
of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider
providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.
Newsletter Sponsor – BayGrill:
Recently, Frisco's favorite choice for
fresh grilled seafood, BayGrill (www.baygrilltx.com),
was awarded a three star *** designation (Very Good; A
destination restaurant for this type of food.) by The Dallas
Morning News in ALL categories: food, service and atmosphere.
The owners and staff of BayGrill are very proud of
this accomplishment since the rating system was revised recently
by the DMN's new food critic from San Francisco, Bill Addison,
and the guidelines became much stricter. This review gives
credibility to what local folks have been saying all along and
puts Frisco on the map AGAIN as a destination for fine
dining! This is added incentive to participate in BayGrill's
next wine dinner, Weds. January 30th and to make a
reservation NOW (214-618-5540) to enjoy New Year's Eve at
BayGrill! BayGrill will open at 5PM (only) on New Year's Eve
