Matt’s Blog:

Blog - an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page

The past two weeks have been busy as usual with lots of excitement in the air as the holiday season is upon us.

Merry Main Street in Frisco Square back on December 2 was a huge hit. Lots of people converged on the square, even though cold temperatures were setting in. Since I live in Frisco Square, we had an open house and had lots of people come and go. It was fun to watch all the festivities, including the snow blowing machines from the balcony.

That Monday, December 4, we had a holiday dinner party with seven other couples at josephine’s wine bar & bistro. If you haven’t yet been to this place at the Shops at Starwood (SW corner of Tollway and Lebanon), you are missing out. The place is beautiful inside, the service is friendly, and the food and wine are both great. If you go, mention this newsletter as there was a special offer in last week’s newsletter. You will get 20% off your food bill between now and December 30. We had a great time visiting with friends; their private wine/dining room is great for small parties.

The next night was my City Council meeting which I had to leave early to see my son’s first band concert. The Wester band sounded really good in their first big performance together.

On Thursday, December 7, we went to the Hard Rock Café in Dallas for Erika’s company holiday party. Entertainment was provided by the Russ Martin Show Band from Live 105.3 Free FM, and we thought they did a great job.

The Holiday Salute to Veterans on December 9 was really something. I hope you had a chance to attend and see not only the flyover by the four F-16’s but also the parachuting Elves and Santa. The band sounded great as well. Lots of really cool stuff.

The next day, Sunday, we went to a holiday open house at some friends of ours. We took all the kids and had a great time. It was great to see some people we hadn’t seen in a while from church.

Monday evening we stopped in at Bonnie Ruth’s (Shops at Starwood) for a couple of drinks and really enjoyed the short time we were there. So much so that I went back for lunch on Wednesday and Erika and I will be going back for dinner real soon. If you haven’t had a chance to try this place, you are in for a real treat!

Tuesday, December 12, was a particularly busy day with seven different events scheduled, outside of work! In the morning, we attended the annual Frisco Developers Council appreciation breakfast that they put on for the city staff at City Hall. We were also invited to the Collin County Association of Realtors breakfast at the same time but couldn’t make both as I had a work conference call that I wouldn’t have been able to make it back in time for.

That afternoon, there was an appreciation lunch at La Hacienda for our trash and recycling drivers. I hadn’t been to La Hacienda for a while and the fajitas were yummy! We then had to dash back to City Hall as Champion Waste was having an appreciation lunch for the city staff catered by Rudy’s BBQ (which is coming soon to Frisco.) The city staff sure was eating well that day.

Then, to top it off, we had three different events that night! First was the EDC (Economic Development Corporation) annual holiday party at Hall Office Park. Then we dashed off to Dave & Buster’s as FC Dallas held their “Kicks for Kids” event. Then Erika and I headed to Terilli’s for the Frisco Residents of Color (FROC) first annual holiday mixer and open house. We had a great time and made some new friends.

On Wednesday we took all the kids to Texas Land & Cattle to celebrate one of their birthdays. We had great service and everybody enjoyed themselves.

Thursday night was the official grand opening of our new Police station. What a beautiful and well deserved facility. Thank you voters of Frisco for approving the bonds a few years ago that allowed us to build this much needed facility.

Erika and I are now in our seventh week of training with Tony, our personal trainer, and it continues to go great. You will be hearing more about Tony and his business in the very near future.

Have a great weekend and I’ll talk with you again soon!

Tornado Talk…by Junior Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:

This past Saturday night the Texas Tornado achieved a three-game SWEEP over the last place Alaska Avalanche. Now the Tornado are closer than ever, being only 6 points out of first. They showed a tremendous amount of effort and it paid off big time.

The Saturday game was won in a shootout. First period, the Tornado struck 8 minutes in, to claim the 1st goal in the match. Alaska scored 3 minutes later to end the period 1-1. Now it was really game time. The second & third periods were exactly the same. Tornado scored first, then Alaska followed. In the 2nd, rookie Mike Cifelli scored and 3 minutes later Alaska scored. In the 3rd period, the Tornado should have won it early when they made the score 3-2. But, with 42 seconds left, the game was put into overtime, by Alaska making it 3-3. No luck in overtime, so the game came down to a shoot out. Well, luckily we won it. Justin King, Sean Roadhouse and John Bullis scored while Alaska only scored once against Thomas Tragust. The shots on goal were 60-37, as the Tornado dominated.

The Tornado play tomorrow, Friday night vs. the Wichita Falls wildcats. After the game, it is skate with the Tornado and Santa. Don’t miss it!

That’s all for this week! Have a good weekend!

Carols by Candlelight – A New Old Family Christmas Tradition:

Pastor Glenn and Robyn Feehan and TrueNORTH Church Frisco are again hosting the 2nd Annual “Carols By Candlelight” - a new family tradition here in North Texas.  This year’s event is once again held at the beautiful Frisco Commons Park, at the Amphitheatre near the pond.  Saturday Night December 16th – 6:00 thru 7:15 PM (ish).

Glenn and Robyn, being born in New Zealand came to the USA from their home in Sydney Australia, have carried the vision for such an event ever since arriving in America.

This year’s “Carols” event will be approximately 70 minutes long.  Well known Carols will be played mostly in a community sing-a-long style with lyrics being projected on a screen.   Some solo tunes will be featured with guest artist Kate Miner covering some of that area of the event.  The Christmas story will be narrated thru-out the event in small 2 minute grabs.  Candles will be supplied.  It is not likely to be a warm night so dress warm, bring the kids, a blanket and maybe a thermos flask to keep the vocal cords from chilling!

TrueNORTH will supply free Hot Chocolate for as long as supplies last.

Carols By Candlelight evening is normally a way of raising funds for a charity.  As the event gathers momentum TrueNORTH plans to take the event to a new level each year, progressing to inviting other churches, performance groups and artists to be involved and begin to find a Texas charity to support as the event grows.  Who knows perhaps one day this will grow into a large televised event as it has in both Australia and New Zealand.

Day Job Refugees will be rocking RockHouse Live on January 16th and back at Obzeet on February 3rd.  Check out this talented band at http://www.dayjobrefugees.com.

Greg White—a friend of CCSA co-founder Dan Scot Parr—just bought a studio in Fort Worth.  Greg studied music at Belmont University in Nashville, and he's played with and recorded a lot of different artists and bands.  If you’re looking for a recording facility, contact him at Sounds Great Studios, (817) 246-8590.

Got a musician on your holiday gift list?  Mudcat Band has some fun items on their site at www.MudcatBand.com.  Also check out the Gigster Clinic (www.GigsterClinics.com/merch.htm) site for “Got Gigs?” and other unusual gift items, most under $30.

Veteran rocker, Ryan Michael Galloway, will present The Gigster Clinic, a serious nuts-and-bolts music career program for rising and returning performers.  Form your band, get your gear, make some news, rock the world!  The clinic will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Music Conservatory of Texas, 9255 Preston Road in Frisco, Texas from noon to 5:30.  Lunch, snacks, drinks included, as well as a textbook for full participants—and as usual, previous attendees welcomed to audit for free.  www.GigsterClinics.com, or 972-841-0226 for more information.  Full participants $115, or audit for $65.  Yup, another good gift for the musician on your list.

Family Hope Seeks Host Families for Visiting UKRAINIAN Orphans:

Family Hope, in association with International Family Services (a Texas-based 501(c)(3) licensed child placing agency), will be welcoming a group of Ukrainian orphans, ages 6 to 12, next month as they arrive at DFW marking the beginning of their 3 week American cultural encounter. The purpose of the program is to give the orphans a chance to experience American culture and a wholesome family environment. The program will also create awareness about the need for adoptive families for older children residing in Ukrainian orphanages.

During their visit, the children will be fully immersed in American culture. The children will attend a day camp three days a week where they will be introduced to typical American activities like sports, the mall and museums. Once a week, there will be a public event where interested families can interact with the children still available for adoption.

Families interested in adopting an older child and/or welcoming a child in their home as a host family, are encouraged to contact John Peterson or Stacy Zonis immediately. Interested families can contact John Peterson, DFW Family Hope Coordinator, at  817-291-8676 or email him at john@ifservices.org. Stacy Zonis can be reached at 972-678-0922, or email her at stacyzbzbee@tx.rr.com .

Blake, Bryans and Fish to Headline Tennis Event Here in Frisco:

No. 1 ranked American singles player James Blake, ATP World No. 1 doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan and ATP Tour Star Mardy Fish will headline the Dallas FedEX Shootout Series presented by Saab and Baylor Medical Center at Frisco on Saturday, December 16th at 7:00pm at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco.

People magazine named James Blake as one of the sexiest men alive. The former Harvard “All American” just might seem to have it all with 10 career titles. James Blake is on top of his game, and is excited about the opportunity to come to the Dallas Ft. Worth Metroplex to play tennis. “This is a great opportunity to bring world class men’s tennis back to Dallas. I’m also looking forward to playing Mardy Fish. It will be a great match. Mardy and I reached the doubles finals in Memphis and semi finals in Houston earlier this year. We know each others game. So the match will be tough.”

Rising U.S. tennis star Mardy Fish won a silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic games and has played in five Davis Cup ties for the U.S. “James Blake and I won the deciding doubles point against Slovakia in Oklahoma City,” says Mardy Fish. “I look forward to returning to Dallas and playing James. It will be a battle, he’s such a great competitor.”

In addition to the Blake and Fish men’s singles match, the world #1 doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan will team up to challenge James Blake and Thomas Blake in the “Battle of the Brothers”. Perhaps this will be the most interesting match of the evening. Bob holds 29 and Mike holds 31 career titles in doubles. So far in 2006 the Bryans have won two slams, the Australian Open and Wimbledon and were finalist at the French Open.

“This will be a great night of world class tennis and family entertainment,” says Tim Stallard, event producer and president of PROLINK Sports and Entertainment. “The last time the FedEX Shootout Series came to Dallas featuring Andy Roddick and Taylor Dent, they played to a sold out crowd. James Blake, the Byran Brothers and Mardy Fish offer a great addition to the Fed EX Shootout Series, providing tennis fans with the best in men’s tennis.”

Tickets are available by calling 214-GO-STARS (214) 467-8277. Tickets can also be purchased on line through www.tickets.com. Ticket prices are $26.50, $45.50 and $75.50.
