A couple of weeks ago, Erika and I got married in a wonderful ceremony that involved all six of our kids. After the wedding we took a fantastic cruise out of Miami on the Norwegian Pearl and visited Cozumel and Grand Cayman. Thank you to everybody for their well wishes and I will include more pictures in upcoming issues of the newsletter.

This Day in History – December 6, 1884: Washington Monument Completed

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a nine-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing the construction of an impressive monument to the city's namesake and the nation's first president, George Washington. As early as 1783, the infant U.S. Congress decided that a statue of George Washington, the great Revolutionary War general, should be placed near the site of the new Congressional building, wherever it might be. After then-President Washington asked him to lay out a new
federal capital on the Potomac River in 1791, architect Pierre L'Enfant left a place for the statue at the western end of the sweeping National Mall (near the monument's present location).

It wasn't until 1832, however--33 years after Washington's death—that anyone really did anything about the monument. That year, a private
Washington National Monument Society was formed. After holding a design competition and choosing an elaborate Greek temple-like design by architect Robert Mills, the society began a fundraising drive to raise money for the statue's construction. These efforts—including appeals to the nation's schoolchildren--raised some $230,000, far short of the $1 million needed. Construction began anyway, on July 4, 1848, as representatives of the society laid the cornerstone of the monument: a 24,500-pound block of pure white marble.

Six years later, with funds running low, construction was halted. Around the time the Civil War began in 1861, author Mark Twain described the unfinished monument as looking like a "hollow, oversized chimney." No further progress was made until 1876--the centennial of American independence--when President Ulysses S. Grant authorized construction to be completed.

Made of some 36,000 blocks of marble and granite stacked 555 feet in the air, the monument was the tallest structure in the world at the time of its completion in December 1884. In the six months following the dedication ceremony, over 10,000 people climbed the nearly 900 steps to the top of the Washington Monument. Today, an elevator makes the trip far easier, and more than 800,000 people visit the monument each year. A city law passed in 1910 restricted the height of new buildings to ensure that the monument will remain the tallest structure in Washington, D.C.--a fitting tribute to the man known as the "Father of His Country."

December is Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month:

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends,

This is a newsletter about Frisco for all of us to play a part in. It is designed to bring our community closer together so please submit stuff to me at any time.

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 40,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. Newsletter Sponsor – Stonebriar Spa:

Stonebriar Spa is not a new spa in town.  It was established back in 1997 and recently changed its name from Face & Body Spas.  The passionate owner, Sharon Steel Medina, remains the same as well as the tremendous staff of talented therapists.  The name change was made to better connect with a community that has supported the spa’s tremendous growth over the past decade.   “Everyone loves the new name and has responded positively to the change and to our updated selection of spa services” said Sharon.

Although Stonebriar Spa is the largest spa in Frisco, we remain committed to providing a unique spa experience in a comfortable and relaxed environment.  We are dedicated to exceeding our clients’ expectations and wanting everyone to come back to see us on a regular basis.  A rebook discount of 10% is offered after every visit to ensure you schedule your next spa experience.  “Life gets so busy, we often forget to take time for ourselves” reminds Sharon.

For those experienced spa-goers Sharon highly recommends one of Stonebriar Spa’s signature stone massages.  Choose from relaxing, therapeutic or aromatherapy, stones are warmed to the perfect temperature and become an extension of the massage therapists’ skilled hands.  She also recommends one of our most popular facials: the age defiance deluxe.  “This facial provides visible results for the skin and is an excellent treatment to enhance your beauty and increase your confidence before a big holiday party or special event.”

Throughout December, Sharon wants to encourage families and friends to spend quality time together at Stonebriar Spa.  Business and personal group events with 10 or more services can enjoy a 20% discount Monday – Thursday.  Contact Jamie at Jamie@stonebriarspa.com for more information.  And for those who want to come individually: a complimentary “on the go” manicure ($22 value) will be included with any one hour facial or massage.  Learn more about our selection of services at www.StonebriarSpa.com. Call 972-668-6108 or email appointment@stonebriarspa.com to schedule services.

It was quite the uneventful weekend as the Tornado lost both of their home games, and remain in last place. Their record of 7 wins and 16 losses is a complete reverse of the first place Wichita Falls Wildcats record.  The team received two new players this week, who can hopefully help with the games this weekend in Springfield. Looks like the new team and coach still haven’t gotten their momentum going.

Friday night was a close loss, and it looked like there was a chance of hope in the 2nd period, but the Tornado couldn’t make it happen. The game started off with two Jr. Blues goals against goalie Thomas Callaghan, one of which was unassisted. Ryan Fuller started off the 2nd period scoring the first Tornado goal of the night on a power play. Ben Van Lare tied up the game a few minutes before the 2nd period ended. Going into the 3rd period it was do or die. Penalties got the best of the Tornado in the last period of play. Ryan Fuller got a hooking penalty which allowed Springfield to score the golden goal. The Tornado even had a 5-on-3 power play but couldn’t pull out a goal. Even another power play at the end of the period couldn’t help them win it. Even though both teams had 26 shots, it was a 3-2 win for Springfield.

Saturday was an even more grueling loss, making it their third straight loss. As the night before, the game started off with two Springfield goals, one in the first and one in the second period. Down 2 to 0, Gustav Bengston snagged a goal for the Tornado with Rob Blanchette and Ben Van Lare assisting. Sad to say that was the last Tornado goal of the night. Springfield got a 5-on-3 power play goal and yet another which was an empty netter with less than two minutes left. Springfield out shot them 38-33 and took the game 4 to 1.

Even though they might not win every game, Tornado games are still one of the most exciting things to see in Frisco. The boys play this weekend in Springfield, then return home the 14th and the 15th. Have a great weekend!!!

Texans to Host Children’s Book Drive for USO Reading Room:

Texans Credit Union is supporting the United Service Organization (USO) this holiday season – and you can help! Throughout the month of December, Texans will be hosting a children's book drive to support the USO DFW Operation Reading Room. This program helps deployed service men and women stay connected to the children in their lives by tape-recording the deployed parent reading a book to his or her child. The DVD of the parent reading and a copy of the book are sent to the child and family back home. All recording equipment, books and packaging materials are supplied by the USO.

Families and deployed soldiers feel the distance even more during the holidays, so help keep a family connected this holiday season by donating a book. Bring a new children's book to any of the Texans branches in the month of December and drop it in the donation box.  For locations, visit www.texanscu.org . To learn more about the USO DFW, visit www.uso.org/dfw.

Texans Credit Union is a Texas-based, member-owned, non--profit financial cooperative with branches throughout North Texas, Austin and Houston.  Texans provides financial products and services to 156,000 members and has assets approaching $2 billion.
