Spotlight on…FasTracKids:

This interview was conducted with Florence Lubinus, the Executive Director of FasTracKids here in Frisco…

Tell us about your business, Florence

Thank you Matt for giving me the opportunity to speak about FasTracKids. I am very excited to have opened this Child Enrichment Center in Frisco because it gives the children of Frisco ages 3-8 a location to get a unique educational and fun experience.  Let me specify, we are Not a Tutorial service. Children come to our center once a week for two hours and learn a variety of subjects such as Astronomy, Biology, Literature, Art Speech and Drama Etc. Our focus is on allowing children to have fun while learning and not missing the window of opportunity which is open during early childhood. Our classes are for all children in the age group of 3-8, they may or may not attend day-care or school and class times are arranged to fit most schedules.

Certainly sounds like something we need here in Frisco with the amount of children that live here. So, what makes you different from your competition? Or what makes your business unique?

Well Matt, our business is indeed unique in the fact that we incorporate the latest Technology has offer to teach the children.  What I mean is, children are instructed through a Computerized interactive board using a LCD projector and CD -ROM based lessons.  Kids can actually play games, draw and solve puzzles on the board.  Children give video-taped presentations in every class which helps build confidence and enhances their speaking skills. The hands-on activities range from creating art projects and sculptures to conducting experiments and playing games or acting and creating scenes for drama. I would like to say that at FasTracKids, children learn the three C's as opposed to the three R's taught through traditional learning. The three C's being - Creativity development, Critical Thinking abilities and Communication skills. All of these enriching experiences makes for a well developed, curious and well rounded child that will have a healthy appreciation for learning. The movement allowed during learning ( we break up the learning and activity times at regular and frequent intervals) has an impact on developing focusing and concentrating skills.

How does someone find you?

We are centrally located in Frisco. The FasTracKids center is at the Southwest corner of Preston Road and Stonebrook. You can also look us up on our website- www.smartmindz.net or find the Frisco location on www.fastrackids.com

Florence, everybody loves a special. Any special offer for our newsletter readers?

Of course, if the readers mention that they saw us on this newsletter, we will waive the Registration fee, a $100 value.

That’s fantastic! Is there any additional information about your center or program which we should know?

Actually yes, FasTracKids has featured on many news programs including Fox in Chicago IL. and the Sep 22, 2006 issue of the New York Times had particularly mentioned the value of this program. The link to the latter is    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/22/world/asia/22elites.html. FasTracKids is located in 30 different countries and is taught in 13 different languages. At our center in Frisco, we also have Spanish and French language classes with new enrichment programs being considered.  We want this to become The Enrichment education center in Frisco and have dedicated teachers who value and care about what we offer to children.

Florence, since I love to eat, tell us what your favorite restaurant in this area is?

Randy's Steakhouse is definitely up there along with some of the newer ones that keep cropping up in the area.

I love Randy’s Steakhouse. It is certainly one of my favorites as well. Ok, another passion of mind is music. What kind of music are you listening to these days?

95.3-The Range is taken my fancy for now.

Anything else our readers should know about you?

I truly enjoy working with children and want them to achieve their maximum potential in anything they undertake. I want to be a part of the Frisco area's education community and would like to serve in any manner or form to help children attain their goals.

Table of Contents:

Because this newsletter continues to grow in size with so much going on in Frisco and the surrounding areas, I have added a table of contents. It’s not a clickable table of contents, yet, but that will be happening soon. For now, it is simply a listing, in order, of everything in this newsletter. For those of you who submit things to me to be added to the newsletter, you may want to consider using descriptive titles for your submission in the future, otherwise I will continue to make them up..

Tornado Talk…by Junior Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:

This past Friday night was not the best of times for your Texas Tornado. They extended their losing streak to 3 games. Fortunately the Wednesday before Thanksgiving was a completely opposite game from Friday.  Again, the Tornado went into overtime, but this time they won against the Springfield Jr. Blues and the losing streak was snapped.

In the 1st period of play in last Friday’s game, it was tied 1-1. The Wildcats scored first about 5 minutes into the game. After that Sean Roadhouse put one in about halfway through. Justin King assisted on the goal. Coming into the 2nd period, it was important that somebody needed to take the lead. But, it wasn’t the Tornado. Wichita scored the solo goal of the period at 9 minutes in. They couldn’t answer that goal so the period ended 2-1, Wichita. In the 3rd period your Tornado had their last chance to bring home a win and Justin King made it an option by scoring an unassisted goal towards the end of the game. Wichita didn’t return that one, so the game was sent into overtime, 2-2.  Overtime is 5 minutes long and the Wildcats scored only about a minute and a half into it. Since it is sudden death, the Tornado lost their 3rd game in a row, one in OT, one in a Shoot out and one 5-1.  The Tornado completely out shot them 32-15 so it’s a wonder why there wasn’t more scoring involved. The 3 stars of the game were Lyon Messier, Stephane Da Costa and Justin King. As of this game the Tornado are in 3rd place and 14 points out of first.

Wednesday night was a good night for the Tornado. Starting off the game, the Tornado led in shots 14-5. But, you never have a period of no scoring during a Tornado game, so with only 7 seconds left in the 1st period, Springfield scored.  So it was 1-0 at the start. The 2nd period was different, as only the Tornado scored. Justin King put one in for his 2nd goal in just 2 games. Nielsson Arcibal and Brian Reagan assisted on the goal. At the end of the 2nd period, the score was now all tied up 1-1. The 3rd period was quite the thriller.  Springfield started it off by scoring 42 seconds in. Of course, the Tornado had to answer the goal so Tom Brooks put one in only a minute later on a power play. Colin Long and Brian Reagan assisted. Someone had to break the tie and so the Tornado did. Jake Newton scored his 2nd goal of the season about 5 minutes into the period, again on a power play. John Bullis assisted. With the Tornado leading 3-2, Springfield needed to change things. Four minutes later, the score was tied once again 3-3. Nobody scored for the rest of the period, so the game turned into a flashback of Friday night, but this time with a different outcome. 55 seconds into over time, Stephane Da Costa had his 7th goal of the season for the game winner. It was an unassisted goal and won him #1 star of the night. The Tornado out shot them 33-15 and the final score was 4-3.

The Tornado play 2 more home games this weekend against the 2nd place Santa Fe Roadrunners. Friday night is the ever-popular Teddy Bear Toss, so bring some stuffed animals to donate to a good cause. Saturday is the last day of their home stand, and the next home game won’t be until December 15. So spend some family time this weekend enjoying some great hockey. You can call 972-335-9800 or go to www.tornadohockey.com for tickets.

Thanks for reading and Happy Thanksgiving!

16th Annual Merry Main Street to Feature New “Festival of Trees”; Activity Proceeds to Benefit Senior Center at Frisco Square:

Help deck the halls of the Senior Center at Frisco Square by trimming a tree!  Participate in ‘Festival of Trees’ – a new addition to the 16th annual Merry Main Street celebration to be held on Dec. 2.

The Frisco Senior Adult Center Advisory Council, a non-profit organization, is inviting citizens of all ages to decorate Christmas trees, which will be displayed at a silent auction. Participants are asked to donate decorations.

Fifteen artificial, 3 ft. trees are ready to be decorated and can be picked up at the Senior Center at Frisco Square, 6670 Moore Street.  A $20 deposit will be required at the time of pickup and refunded when the trees are returned decorated.  The deadline to return decorated trees is November 27, between noon and 7 p.m. at the vacant store front on 6100 block of Frisco Square, next to Bella Cosa. Auction proceeds from the trees will be used to purchase equipment and supplies for the Phase II addition of the Senior Center at Frisco Square, which is currently under construction.

“We’re so grateful voters approved bond monies to build the Phase ll addition to the center,” said Judy Florence, Senior Center Supervisor.  “But we’ll still need some help filling the additional space with the equipment and supplies we need to serve our growing senior population.”

Some of the items the Frisco Senior Adult Center Advisory Council plans to purchase with event proceeds include a portable stage, table coverings, exercise equipment, blinds, ceiling fans and a ceramic kiln and supplies.

“We plan to make the Festival of Trees a regular feature of Merry Main Street,” said Florence.  “We hope folks will help us raise funds for the Senior Center and have fun helping us make Merry Main Street more festive than ever!”

The Festival of Trees will be displayed alongside the entrees in the City of Frisco’s Annual Gingerbread House Contest. Trees will be available for viewing and bidding between November Nov. 28 and Dec. 2. For more information on the Festival of Trees, call 972-335-5515 or e-mail jflorence@friscotexas.gov

Book on Early Schools Now Available from Frisco Heritage Association:

Early schools of the Frisco area is the subject of the latest book, ‘Reading,’Riting and’Rithmetic, published by the Heritage Association of Frisco. The book covers nineteen schools of the area prior to 1938. The oldest known schools were Robertson and Rock Hill, both established in 1850.

Research for the book was conducted by a special committee of the Heritage Association and includes first person accounts from former students and teachers such as Ruth Borchardt who graduated from Frisco High School in 1924 and began her teaching career at Hackberry School in 1925.

According to Linda Sutton, Publications Committee Chairman, the book was a two-year project that began when the Heritage Association office received several inquiries from people wanting information about old schools. “At first we were going to put together a reference book for our own purposes, but then we began to see old documents and hear fascinating stories from some of our older citizens. It was just too good not to share!”

Colorful stories from the book include accounts of a first grade boy who was spanked for kissing his classmate, a dog that went to school, a student who anticipated a painful paddling and wore two suits of clothing to school, and an asthma remedy that involved chicken gizzards.

The book is richly illustrated with photos of schools, students, and documents. Lists of students, teachers, principals and trustees are provided when names were available. The book is 153 pages, hard bound and indexed, making research easy. The Heritage Association dedicated the book to Dr. Erwin Pink, former president of the Heritage Association and Frisco High School team doctor.

The Heritage Association is a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1998. “Every penny we receive goes to our mission to “research, preserve and share Frisco’s history,” said president Bob Warren. Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rithmetic is the fourth book published by the organization. To order a book or for more information, call 972-335- 6684 or visit www.friscoheritage.org

Blake, Bryans and Fish to Headline Tennis Event Here in Frisco:

No. 1 ranked American singles player James Blake, ATP World No. 1 doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan and ATP Tour Star Mardy Fish will headline the Dallas FedEX Shootout Series presented by Saab and Baylor Medical Center at Frisco on Saturday, December 16th at 7:00pm at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco.

People magazine named James Blake as one of the sexiest men alive. The former Harvard “All American” just might seem to have it all with 10 career titles. James Blake is on top of his game, and is excited about the opportunity to come to the Dallas Ft. Worth Metroplex to play tennis. “This is a great opportunity to bring world class men’s tennis back to Dallas. I’m also looking forward to playing Mardy Fish. It will be a great match. Mardy and I reached the doubles finals in Memphis and semi finals in Houston earlier this year. We know each others game. So the match will be tough.”

Rising U.S. tennis star Mardy Fish won a silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic games and has played in five Davis Cup ties for the U.S. “James Blake and I won the deciding doubles point against Slovakia in Oklahoma City,” says Mardy Fish. “I look forward to returning to Dallas and playing James. It will be a battle, he’s such a great competitor.”

In addition to the Blake and Fish men’s singles match, the world #1 doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan will team up to challenge James Blake and Thomas Blake in the “Battle of the Brothers”. Perhaps this will be the most interesting match of the evening. Bob holds 29 and Mike holds 31 career titles in doubles. So far in 2006 the Bryans have won two slams, the Australian Open and Wimbledon and were finalist at the French Open.

“This will be a great night of world class tennis and family entertainment,” says Tim Stallard, event producer and president of PROLINK Sports and Entertainment. “The last time the FedEX Shootout Series came to Dallas featuring Andy Roddick and Taylor Dent, they played to a sold out crowd. James Blake, the Byran Brothers and Mardy Fish offer a great addition to the Fed EX Shootout Series, providing tennis fans with the best in men’s tennis.”

Tickets are available by calling 214-GO-STARS (214) 467-8277. Tickets can also be purchased on line through www.tickets.com. Ticket prices are $26.50, $45.50 and $75.50.
