Inspirational Quote of the Week:

" Love the family! Defend and promote it as the basic cell of human society; nurture it as the prime sanctuary of life. Give great care to the preparation of engaged couples and be close to young married couples, so that they will be for their children and the whole community an eloquent testimony of God's love.” Pope John Paul II, 2001

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. Stop sign camera devices are similar to the stop light cameras that Frisco has at some stop light intersections except that a machine will make calculations to determine whether a vehicle did not stop for a long enough period of time before continuing through the intersection.

A. We do not have the statutory authority for stop sign cameras. An excerpt from the law states:

Sec. 542.406 Texas Transportation Code

(a) In this section, "photographic traffic signal enforcement system" means a system that:
(1) consists of a camera system and vehicle sensor installed to exclusively work in conjunction with an electrically operated traffic-control signal;"

Driving in a safe, defensive manner is the best thing a citizen can do to avoid collisions. Reporting troublesome intersections can be effective as well, but officers must divide their time between traffic enforcement and our other duties.

This Day in History – November 22, 1963: John F. Kennedy Assassinated

From the History Channel…

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, is
assassinated while traveling through Dallas, Texas, in an open-top
convertible.

First lady Jacqueline Kennedy rarely accompanied her husband on political outings, but she was beside him, along with Texas Governor John Connally and his wife, for a 10-mile motorcade through the streets of downtown Dallas on November 22. Sitting in a Lincoln
convertible, the Kennedys and Connallys waved at the large and
enthusiastic crowds gathered along the parade route. As their vehicle passed the Texas School Book Depository Building at 12:30 p.m., Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired three shots from the sixth floor, fatally wounding President Kennedy and seriously injuring Governor Connally. Kennedy was pronounced dead 30 minutes later at Dallas' Parkland Hospital. He was 46.

Vice President Lyndon Johnson, who was three cars behind President Kennedy in the motorcade, was sworn in as the 36th president of the United States at 2:39 p.m. He took the presidential oath of office aboard Air Force One as it sat on the runway at Dallas Love Field airport. The swearing in was witnessed by some 30 people, including Jacqueline Kennedy, who was still wearing clothes stained with her
husband's blood. Seven minutes later, the presidential jet took off for Washington.

The next day, November 23, President Johnson issued his first proclamation, declaring November 25 to be a day of national mourning for the slain president. On that Monday, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of Washington to watch a horse-drawn caisson bear Kennedy's body from the Capitol Rotunda to St. Matthew's Catholic Cathedral for a requiem Mass. The solemn procession then continued on to Arlington National Cemetery, where leaders of 99 nations gathered
for the state funeral. Kennedy was buried with full military honors on a slope below Arlington House, where an eternal flame was lit by his widow to forever mark the grave.

Lee Harvey Oswald, born in New Orleans in 1939, joined the U.S. Marines in 1956. He was discharged in 1959 and nine days later left for the Soviet Union, where he tried unsuccessfully to become a citizen. He worked in Minsk and married a Soviet woman and in 1962 was allowed to return to the United States with his wife and infant daughter. In early 1963, he bought a .38 revolver and rifle with a telescopic sight by mail order, and on April 10 in Dallas he allegedly shot at and missed former U.S. Army general Edwin Walker, a figure known for his extreme right-wing views. Later that month, Oswald went to New Orleans and founded a branch of the Fair Play for Cuba
Committee, a pro-Castro organization. In September 1963, he went to Mexico City, where investigators allege that he attempted to secure a visa to travel to Cuba or return to the USSR. In October, he returned to Dallas and took a job at the Texas School Book Depository Building.

Less than an hour after Kennedy was shot, Oswald killed a policeman who questioned him on the street near his rooming house in Dallas. Thirty minutes later, Oswald was arrested in a movie theater by police responding to reports of a suspect. He was formally arraigned on November 23 for the murders of President Kennedy and Officer J.D. Tippit.

On November 24, Oswald was brought to the basement of the Dallas police headquarters on his way to a more secure county jail. A crowd of police and press with live television cameras rolling gathered to witness his departure. As Oswald came into the room, Jack Ruby emerged from the crowd and fatally wounded him with a single shot from a concealed .38 revolver. Ruby, who was immediately detained, claimed that rage at Kennedy's murder was the motive for his action. Some called him a hero, but he was nonetheless charged with first-degree murder.

Jack Ruby, originally known as Jacob Rubenstein, operated strip joints and dance halls in Dallas and had minor connections to organized crime. He features prominently in Kennedy-assassination theories, and many believe he killed Oswald to keep him from revealing a larger conspiracy. In his trial, Ruby denied the allegation and pleaded innocent on the grounds that his great grief over Kennedy's murder had caused him to suffer "psychomotor epilepsy" and shoot Oswald unconsciously. The jury found Ruby guilty of "murder with malice" and
sentenced him to die.

In October 1966, the Texas Court of Appeals reversed the decision on the grounds of improper admission of testimony and the fact that Ruby
could not have received a fair trial in Dallas at the time. In January 1967, while awaiting a new trial, to be held in Wichita Falls, Ruby died of lung cancer in a Dallas hospital.

The official Warren Commission report of 1964 concluded that neither Oswald nor Ruby were part of a larger conspiracy, either domestic or international, to assassinate President Kennedy. Despite its seemingly firm conclusions, the report failed to silence conspiracy theories surrounding the event, and in 1978 the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded in a preliminary report that Kennedy was "probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy" that may have involved multiple shooters and organized crime. The committee's
findings, as with those of the Warren Commission, continue to be widely disputed.

November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month:

So far this month we have covered Adoption, Diabetes Awareness and Alzheimer’s Awareness…

Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM) is a national campaign dedicated to increasing attention to lung cancer issues. By organizing rallies, distributing educational material, holding fund-raising events, contacting Congress, and speaking to the media, those involved in LCAM bring much-needed support and attention to a disease that each year kills more people than breast, prostate, colon and pancreas cancers combined.

Visit the Lung Cancer Alliance web site for more information.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends,

This week’s newsletter is Proudly Sponsored by the Plano Symphony Orchestra and their “Very Best of Home for the Holidays” event coming up on December 15 at Centennial High School. Be sure to get your tickets today as they will sell out quickly. Also check out the spotlight on Letter Perspectives, a very unique business where you create the art. It is a fantastic concept and makes great gift ideas. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

I hope everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know that I have so much to be thankful for and I feel so blessed each and every day that I try and do everything I can to give back to others. As an FYI, next week’s newsletter will be a day late so it will not come out until Friday night/Saturday morning. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

If you happen to go out shopping on Black Friday, please keep a couple of things in mind. First and foremost, shop in Frisco whenever possible as your sales tax dollars go a long way in helping us maintain one of the lowest property tax rates in this entire area. Secondly, and just as important, please be patient and be careful. There will be a lot of people out shopping this entire weekend.

This is a community newsletter and as such, I want to encourage you to send me community events as well as write-ups about people or groups who should be recognized and/or commended for what they do or have done. This is a newsletter about Frisco for all of us to play a part in. It is designed to bring our community closer together so please submit stuff to me at any time.

Spotlight on…Letter Perspectives:

This interview was conducted with owner Heather Hall…

Heather, you have a really cool business. Please tell us about Letter Perspectives

Letter Perspectives is essentially art that you create. Our easy-to-use website (www.letterperspectives.com) provides you with black and white photographs of letters and helps you design your own piece of “name art” with them, which makes it personal and unique. It’s the idea of looking at everyday objects in the world—like tree branches or the angles and lines on fencing or a barn door—and basically seeing letters in them…an E or an L, for instance. This business grew out of an alphabet lesson with my son, Noah. I had been encouraging my boys to pick out letters as we drove around town, on signs and such. One afternoon, we were walking in the neighborhood and Noah points to a tree and says, “Look Mom! An E!” I looked and saw just what he did—three branches stretched out together in a perfect E formation. I took a picture and it went from there. We’ve created a website - www.letterperspectives.com — where you can go and use the wide variety of black and white photographs we’ve taken to design your own personal, framed piece of art. People often make their name: JONES for their living room or SARA for their child’s room. But, we have many orders for words that have special meaning, like FAITH or LOVE or HOME.

I have a great passion for Art and just love what you are doing. Please tell us more about what’s unique or different about your business?

I think the product itself is unique. Each piece we ship out is different. It’s a business, but we are rooted in a family experience that I think a lot of moms and families can relate to. And this time of year, everyone is looking for that “something special” to give. Everybody has one person (or persons!) who either has everything or is hard to buy for. Letter Perspectives is the answer to that problem. It’s fun to make your own piece and play around on the site (www.letterperspectives.com), but then, seeing your creation hanging on your wall really blows people away. The uniqueness and quality makes people feel like they’ve created their own family heirloom. And they have!

What a great time of year to get in touch with you as you can create such a unique holiday gift. How does someone find you?

Right now, the web is the only place! http://www.letterperspectives.com. But we are working with retailers to have Letter Perspectives offered in specialty shops around the area.

This is the part of the spotlight where people get to know a little more about you. One of my passions is music. What kind of music do you like to listen to?

Both my husband Mike and I love David Wilcox and Allen Levi. Both these guys are songwriters…their lyrics are more poems and stories that connect you with the soul of his music rather than the ear candy that is pop music. We like music with that kind of acoustic sound … but maybe we’re just getting old!

I love your thought process there. The lyrics and the soul of music is something I really get into. Another passion of mine is food and eating at the great restaurants we have in Frisco. What are some of your favorites?

We love any Mexican food, but especially Manny's downtown. Mike loves Randy's. And we lament every October when the Snow Cone Lady closes shop for winter. Those kinda become a food group for us during the summer! You'll also find us at Starbucks or It's a Grind for a cup of coffee.

Great selections! Ok, is there anything else you would like to share with readers of this newsletter?

We go to Providence Church and just love it. If you're looking for a church home, check it out: www.insideprovidence.com. The people are great. Mike is also on staff with a ministry called Halftime. We have four kids 5 years old and under, and they keep me busy, but I love it. We also serve on the Young Life committee in Frisco, which is a ministry to high school kids.
