Hopefully you had a chance to attend the Frisco Community Parade that took place last weekend. We had a great time seeing so many of you as we got to rid on the fire engine.

This picture of the whole clan was taken on the fire engine just before the parade started.

From our family to yours, we hope you have a very happy, safe and blessed Thanksgiving holiday.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. I saw a firetruck and ambulance going North on Preston last night. So I came this morning to check out the coverage, and found the Fire Station District map on the city’s web site.

First, I was a little shocked to find out that Creekside @ Preston (and surrounding areas) is covered by the Central Fire Station (#1) and not Station #5. That means trucks have to come up Preston which is awful at most points of the day, while Station #5 is just down the street. Why didn't Station #5 go more West & North, while Station #1 went more East?

Second, I saw that Station #6 is under construction on Eldorado (close to Teel), but that looks like it will be really close to Station #4. Is there a map with an overlay to show what the districts will look like once that station is in operation?

It seems like there would have been better coverage is Station #6 was a little more North, like on Panther Creek (and still close to Teel).

Lastly, are there any other stations in the short or long term plans? I would assume at least one more station will eventually go up North, once that starts growing more. If there are plans, are their map overlays with that info too?

A. The response districts are verified quite frequently for “real time” responses by the fire trucks and ambulances. The map you reference does need to be updated in some areas. Although I, like you, have questioned the response for Preston Rd. north of Eldorado, the Fire Chief Officers who review those responses have confirmed over the past year that Central Station is most often the closest station, in terms of response time, for the area along Preston Rd. to SH 380. We will continue to monitor that area, along with several other areas in Frisco, and make changes as the response times dictate. Station 5 remains “second due” for that area and does respond to all of Preston Rd. north of Main St. often.

We use a general overall fire station master plan that identifies likely locations for future fire stations. That plan is somewhat fluid taking into consideration the future street alignments and development density, both commercial and residential. There will be three stations further north than Station 6. Station 6 is situated to cover the westernmost portion of Frisco with plans to add a station on Stonebrook west of FM 423 and another on Lebanon in the area of Teel. Nine fire station sites, including the six current station locations, have been purchased.

The response times in the northwestern quadrant were the longest in our City. Compounding the problem was the distance of “second due” stations. When Station 4’s crews were on emergencies, the times for Station 3 and Central to our northwest quadrant were an additional concern.

As we look at the City with its current development, response times and coverage appear balanced. The Monthly Reports verify that.

The overall plan indicates 12 fire station in Frisco with the likelihood that two additional stations may be needed bringing our total at build out to as many as 14 fire stations. The map overlays used to determine station locations are updated and modified as development occurs.

Thank you,

Mack Borchardt
Frisco Fire Chief

This Day in History – November 15, 1867: First Stock Ticker Debuts

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1867, the first stock ticker is unveiled in New York City. The advent of the ticker ultimately revolutionized the stock market by making up-to-the-minute prices available to investors around the country. Prior to this development, information from the New York Stock Exchange, which has been around since 1792, traveled by mail or messenger.

The ticker was the brainchild of Edward Calahan, who configured a telegraph machine to print stock quotes on streams of paper tape (the same paper tape later used in ticker-tape parades). The ticker, which caught on quickly with investors, got its name from the sound its type wheel made.

Calahan worked for the Gold & Stock Telegraph Company, which rented its tickers to brokerage houses and regional exchanges for a fee and then transmitted the latest gold and stock prices to all its machines at the same time. In 1869, Thomas Edison, a former telegraph operator, patented an improved, easier-to-use version of Calahan's ticker. Edison's ticker was his first lucrative invention and, through the manufacture and sale of stock tickers and other telegraphic devices,
he made enough money to open his own lab in Menlo Park, New Jersey,
where he developed the light bulb and phonograph, among other transformative inventions.

The last mechanical stock ticker debuted in 1960 and was eventually
replaced by computerized tickers with electronic displays. A ticker shows a stock's symbol, how many shares have traded that day and the price per share. It also tells how much the price has changed from the previous day's closing price and whether it's an up or down change. A common misconception is that there is one ticker used by everyone. In fact, private data companies run a variety of tickers; each provides information about a select mix of stocks.

November is National Adoption Month:

So far this month we have covered Diabetes Awareness and Alzheimer’s Awareness…

November is National Adoption Month, a month set aside to raise awareness about the adoption of children from foster care. This year's theme of adopting teens from foster care builds on the Ad Council's new public service announcement (PSA) campaign of the Children's Bureau, the Adoption Exchange Association, and The Collaboration to AdoptUsKids.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends,

This week’s newsletter is Proudly Sponsored by the Plano Symphony Orchestra and their “Very Best of Home for the Holidays” event coming up on December 15 at Centennial High School. Be sure to get your tickets today as they will sell out quickly. Also check out the Spotlight on Maid 2 Order and their approach to cleaning your home. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

Since the next newsletter won’t come out until Thanksgiving night, I thought I would take a few minutes to talk about what I am thankful for. I could never cover everything or everybody but first and foremost, I am thankful to God for blessing me with so many opportunities and for everything I have. I am thankful to Erika and our six kids who make sure there is never a dull moment! I am thankful for my health (thanks, Dr. Checo!) I am thankful for my job at HRchitect, my partner Rick Fletcher and all of our employees who are working so hard to build our company. I am thankful for living in the great city of Frisco and for having the opportunity to be a public servant and be inspired by the people I meet in this city. Last but not least, I am thankful for so many great friends and supporters. Please take some time to think about and help those that are less fortunate than you in any way you can. In many ways, the greatest thanks we can give is to give back to others the gifts that God has given to you. Have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!

I have four Texas Tornado hockey tickets for Friday night, November 23 and Saturday night, November 24 that we can’t use. They are great tickets, 2nd row behind the net. If you would like a set of tickets, be the first to tell me where the first Thanksgiving took place and be sure to let me know which night you prefer the tickets.

Congratulations to everybody who helped with the Frisco Chamber of Commerce new membership drive this week. Over 210 new members were added, which broke a record and makes Frisco the 4th largest Chamber in the metroplex. Thank you also to everybody who joined. Supporting the Chamber helps to support our business quality of life here in Frisco.

This is a community newsletter and as such, I want to encourage you to send me community events as well as write-ups about people or groups who should be recognized and/or commended for what they do or have done. Spotlight on…Maid 2 Order:

This interview was conducted with Ross Bishop, owner of Maid 2 Order here in Frisco…

With all of the cleaning services in Frisco, what’s unique or different about Maid 2 Order?

I can’t help but think our competitors have the same approach to how this type of business should be ran but where I feel we excel over our competitors is how we cater to the individual needs of our clients rather than just performing a basic service. At Maid 2 Order we have excellent communication and rapport with each of our clients and we interact with them on a frequent basis to make sure that the service we provide is above and beyond their expectations. We have a company motto which states that we are to go “above and beyond” not only in the actual cleaning service provided but also in the customer service which exists before, during and after each scheduled service. This is what I fell truly sets us apart from the rest.

Good customer service is so important nowadays. So how does someone find you?

We just opened an office in downtown Frisco where any Client, prospective or existing, is more than welcome to come in but the most easily accessible way to learn about or contact Maid 2 Order is through our website http://maid-2-order.com. On our site you can read Customer Testimonials, Request an Estimate, Sign up for our Random Contests or simply view our Service Checklist. However, if clients come in they may walk out with a bottle of Maid 2 Order wine or some Ro Bear’s Salsa… we try to keep supply on hand!

I love Ro Bear’s Salsa! Ross, this is the part of the spotlight where people get to know a little more about you. One of my passions is music. What kind of music do you like to listen to?

Haha! Well I tend to listen to just about anything but Country. I just have never been a fan. My wife says I am weird because I tend to listen to hard rock to relax and then something like Yanni to get me pumped up. I think it is the emotion Yanni, or pick your favorite composer, puts into it that gets me going. With hard rock, like Metallica, I just sit back smile and relax. Then there are songs like “How to save a life” which almost make me cry. Strange huh? Maybe a Therapist will read this and contact me LOL!

I love it! Erika and I are fans of all types of music and you are right, the range of emotions differ so much from genre to genre. Another passion of mine is food and eating at the great restaurants we have in Frisco. What are some of your favorites?

Well I am a true carnivore. To me there is nothing like sitting over a nice rare filet (rare Pittsburg style to be exact) with a blue or gorgonzola cheese topper. If they have something to that affect on the menu, then it is my favorite at that moment! Frisco has so much to offer as far as restaurants go it is very hard to pick one. Randy’s is right across the street from my office though so it is great and convenient!

You are making me hungry and how can you resist Randy’s?!?!?!?! Ok, is there anything else you would like to share with readers of this newsletter?

I would like the people who read this to know I am a family man first and foremost. My wife Jennifer, who is the most beautiful, intelligent and strongest person I know, is the rock of our family and I quite simply love and adore her. Our children William (2.5 yrs) and Bailey (1 yr next week) are the greatest gift I could have every imagined being blessed with. My family is most important to me and providing for them is priority #1! Maid 2 Order is how I have chosen to provide for them and God willing it will do that and then some. I feel if I wake up every day keeping this in mind our Clients will benefit greatly.

Ross, thanks for interviewing with me today and I love your attitude and philosophy about life. I feel exactly the same way about Erika and my family that you do about Jennifer and your family. Way to go!

Frisco United Soccer Team U12 Champs:

A proud mom told me about this team recently so I thought I would recognize them in front of my faithful newsletter readers. Their team name if "Frisco United" and they took 1st place in their league this year. Shortly following, they finished the
season off undefeated in the U12 division play-off tournament.  They played 5 games this past weekend and 3 of them were shut outs!!!  They now move on to represent "Frisco's U12 boys Soccer Association of Frisco" in the "Tournament of Champions" at Richland College on Dec. 1st. They will play 3 games, and if they advance, they play a quarter final game.  If they win that game they will play a semi final game and if they win that game they will play for the championship.

I want to wish Frisco United U12 the very best of luck as I understand they have worked really hard this year to get to where they are now.

Christmas in the Square at Frisco Square It's almost here!!!!:

On Saturday nights, families are encouraged to bring chairs and a blanket to enjoy holiday movies shown on a 28' x 20' inflatable, outdoor movie screen on Frisco's newly completed plaza, located in front of City Hall.  Holiday movies include Polar Express (Dec. 8), Prancer (Dec. 15) and A Christmas Story (Dec. 22).

Sponsor a Frisco Family Services "Angel" at Nicole's Day Spa at Frisco Square  Pick an "angel" from the Christmas tree located at Nicole's Day Spa in Frisco Square to sponsor a Frisco Family Services friend in need. This year Frisco Family Services is focusing on the entire family, so "children" of all ages will be available to choose from including parents, children, and even Senior Citizens. Each Angel represents a person's wish and information will also be provided about the individual such as age and gender. Over 100 angels are available to be adopted and gifts must be returned no later than December 10th.  The gifts do not have to be wrapped...but rolls of wrapping paper are greatly appreciated.  Thank you!
