The above picture was taken this week at Fisher Elementary School here in Frisco.
This is the fourth year the Urban Forestry Board and City of Frisco Parks Department have donated a tree(s) to various FISD PTA’s to be planted at their elementary schools. A short educational program is presented and a “tree cookie” plaque presented to the schools’ principals. The programs are for the second graders and each student receives a commemorative UFB cup and a seedling to take home and plant. The elementary schools where the programs have been held to date are:
Smith, Bright, Rogers, Sparks, Christie, Ashley and Fisher

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:
Q. I've lived in Frisco since '99 and
my neighborhood is several years older than even that. Yet today, the
ONLY high speed access that is available is through cable only from Time
Warner, which used to be Comcast, which used to be AT&T, etc.
A. Choices for high-speed internet
access vary across the City as the different companies have rolled out
various products at different speeds and within different areas. There
is nothing that the City of Frisco does to impede the roll-out of
high-speed internet within the City. In fact, we have met with different
data providers encouraging them to bring their products to Frisco. We
have shown them the demographics and requested that they provide
services here. In the end, it is a market-based decision and I cannot
speak for the telecommunications companies as to why we are still
limited to two choices in most areas (and as you point out, one
available choice in some areas).
This Day in History – November 8, 1895: German Scientist Discovers X-rays
From the History Channel…
Physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (1845-1923) becomes the first person to observe X-rays, a significant scientific advancement that would ultimately benefit a variety of fields, most of all medicine, by making the invisible visible. Rontgen's discovery occurred accidentally in his Wurzburg, Germany, lab, where he was testing whether cathode rays could pass through glass when he noticed a glow coming from a nearby chemically coated screen. He dubbed the rays that caused this glow X-rays because of their unknown nature.
X-rays are electromagnetic energy waves that act similarly to light rays, but at wavelengths approximately 1,000 times shorter than those of light. Rontgen holed up in his lab and conducted a series of experiments to better understand his discovery. He learned that X-rays penetrate human flesh but not higher-density substances such as bone or lead and that they can be photographed.
Rontgen's discovery was labeled a medical miracle and X-rays soon became an important diagnostic tool in medicine, allowing doctors to see inside the human body for the first time without surgery. In 1897, X-rays were first used on a military battlefield, during the Balkan War, to find bullets and broken bones inside patients.
Scientists were quick to realize the benefits of X-rays, but slower to comprehend the harmful effects of radiation. Initially, it was believed X-rays passed through flesh as harmlessly as light. However, within several years, researchers began to report cases of burns and skin damage after exposure to X-rays, and in 1904, Thomas Edison's assistant, Clarence Dally, who had worked extensively with X-rays, died of skin cancer. Dally's death caused some scientists to begin taking the risks of radiation more seriously, but they still weren't fully understood. During the 1930s, 40s and 50s, in fact, many American shoe stores featured shoe-fitting fluoroscopes that used to X-rays to enable customers to see the bones in their feet; it wasn't until the 1950s that this practice was determined to be risky business. Wilhelm Rontgen received numerous accolades for his work, including the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901, yet he remained modest and never tried to patent his discovery. Today, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine, material analysis and devices such as airport security scanners.
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month:
Last week we covered Alzheimer’s Awareness…
The theme of this year's World Diabetes Day campaign is Diabetes in Children and Adolescents.Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. It can strike children at any age, including pre-school children and even toddlers. Yet diabetes in children is often diagnosed late, when the child has diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), or it is misdiagnosed completely. In many parts of the world, insulin, the main life-saving medication that children with diabetes need to survive, is not available (or is available but remains inaccessible for reasons of economy, geography or constraints on supply). As a consequence, many children die of diabetes, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Those closest to the child - family, school staff, family doctor - may not be aware of the ominous signs. The World Diabetes Day 2007 and 2008 campaigns set out to challenge this and firmly establish the message that ‘no child should die of diabetes'.
Today, more than 240 million people worldwide are living with diabetes. Within 20 years, this number is expected to grow to 380 million. Children are not spared from this global epidemic, with its debilitating and life-threatening complications. Type 1 diabetes is growing by 3% per year in children and adolescents, and at an alarming 5% per year among pre-school children. It is estimated that 70,000 children under 15 develop type 1 diabetes each year (almost 200 children a day). Of the estimated 440,000 cases of type 1 diabetes in children worldwide, more than a quarter live in South-East Asia, and more than a fifth in Europe. Type 2 diabetes was once seen as a disease of adults. Today, this type of diabetes is growing at alarming rates in children and adolescents. In the US, it is estimated that type 2 diabetes represents between 8 and 45% of new-onset diabetes cases in children depending on geographic location. Over a 20-year period, type 2 diabetes has doubled in children in Japan, so that it is now more common than type 1. In native and aboriginal children in North America and Australia, the prevalence rate of type 2 diabetes ranges from 1.3 to 5.3%.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:
If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.
Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
All the opinions, endorsements or recommendations in this newsletter are mine alone and they do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of any organization or group with whom I am affiliated or the individuals who are a part of such organizations and groups. How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Spotlight on…Swept Away Massage:
This interview was conducted with Jennifer Miles, the owner of Swept Away Massage, who is an absolutely fabulous massage therapist…
Jennifer, you have such a passion for what you do. Please tell us about your business:
I truly do have a passion for massage therapy. I have been a therapist since August of 2000. I attended and became certified in many advanced courses that make my massage unique. I customize the massage for each individual’s likes and needs. I specialize in rehabilitative massage to rid the guest of the nagging muscles aches, heal injuries, and work together toward a future of healthy muscles. I also have a passion for working with kids with ADD, ADHD and kids on the autistic spectrum.
That’s great, Jennifer. With all of the massage therapists in Frisco, what’s unique or different about Swept Away Massage?
I was originally trained as a physical therapist and switched to massage so my education exceeds state requirements. With the enhancement of the advanced courses and physical therapy background, I am able to help facilitate the results my guests are looking for whether it is rehab or to relax. I pride myself on having sensitive hands to find the spots that you yourself may not know you have, and knowing just the right pressure to apply.
Jennifer, I know that you are looking to expand your business and move into a new location at some point in the future. For now, how does someone find you?
I am looking to expand my business into a new and exciting concept next year. We are currently in the planning stages. I will keep all my clients up to date on my website www.bestfriscomassage.com. I am currently located at the NE corner of Parkwood & Warren.
Jennifer, this is the part of the spotlight where people get to know a little more about you. One of my passions is music. What kind of music do you like to listen to?
I honestly listen to everything! Country, worship, rock, and even a little R&B. My radio presets have every genre.
You sound like me and Erika. We love all kinds of music! Another passion of mine is food and eating at the great restaurants we have in Frisco. What are some of your favorites?
I love Jinbeh and La Hacienda.
When our kids choose a place to go for a special dinner, Jinbeh is always at or near the top of the list. It’s so much fun! I know that you mentioned a discount for newsletter readers, that I would like to hear about and also, is there anything else you would like to share with readers of this newsletter?
Each session ranges from 60 – 70 minutes, 90 – 100 minutes, or more upon request. I charge $65 per hour, but the readers that mention this article will receive $10 off their first session. I also have discount Tuesdays. On Tuesday mornings, I do massage for only $50 an hour! Lastly, I do offer package plans as well as frequent massage discounts. I want massage to be a treatment, not a treat, and to do that, it needs to be affordable.
Recent Election and a Reminder to Please Register To Vote:

Tornado Talk…by Junior Sports Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:
4th place isn’t the best spot to be in when you’re the Texas Tornado. The boys returned home Friday night for one game, then moved on to Wichita Falls. Neither of the games turned out to be wins. The team is still working on coming together as a team, considering the bundle of rookies, two new goalies, and two new coaches
Friday started off looking nice, with newbie Sam Goodwin netting the first goal for the Tornado. In the 2nd period, Wichita Falls evened the score on a power play goal on goalie Thomas Callaghan. No goals were scored in the 3rd period, so you know what that means…Overtime!! Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way Tornado fans would have liked, Wichita scored an unassisted goal to end the game with the Tornado loss.
Saturday the boys traveled out to Wichita Falls, and faced an even more brutal loss. As the night before, it started off well with Ryan Fuller scoring the first goal about 2 minutes into the game. Sean Roadhouse carried on the wealth, scoring another goal a few minutes later. Wichita put one goal in towards the end of the period, to lead the teams to the locker room 2-1, Tornado. When they returned to the ice, it was all downhill. Four, yes four, Wichita goals were scored in the first 14 minutes of the 2nd period, 3 of which were scored by the same player. It was now 5-2, and there were false hopes. Ben Van Lare gave the Texas a ray of hope, by adding a goal, but the boys couldn’t pull through, and Wichita got an empty net goal with 1 second left to end the game 6-3, Wichita.
The Tornado, have this weekend off, and they start up again with 3 games in Topeka on the 15th. They then return home on the 21st through Dec. 1st. Buy your tickets now by calling 972-335-9800 and experience the atmosphere of a Tornado hockey game. Have a great weekend!!

Annual Community Parade to Salute the Troops:
Frisco loves a parade in the fall and the annual Community Parade is a chance for families to come out and celebrate Veterans Day weekend, listen to all four high school marching bands and wave at the local football heroes.
The Veterans Day event honors our military and also gives each school a chance for student organizations to be highlighted. This year’s event is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Main Street on Saturday, November 10, according to Mayor Mike Simpson and Buddy Minett, president of the Frisco Independent School District Board of Trustees. Both men are serving on the parade committee this year.
Congressman Sam Johnson, a former Vietnam POW, has agreed to serve as parade marshal for the day. In addition to participation by Frisco Independent School District schools, bands and drill teams, community organizations such as the Frisco Garden Club, the Frisco VFW Post 8273 and other organizations. The parade traditionally has several antique cars and vehicles such as fire trucks and police cars in the line up.
Fees for registering in the parade are $150 for non-profit and youth organizations and $200 for business and other professional organizations. Persons may register on-line at Friscoparade.com or in person at the city’s communication office at City Hall or the FISD communication’s office at 6942 Maple Street.
Staging for the event will be at Pizza Hut Park and participants need to meet at PHP at 9 a.m. to line up for the parade.
Visit www.friscoparade.com for more information.
