Dear Friends,
This week’s newsletter is sponsored by The Shops at Starwood. The Shops at Starwood is now open and check out some of the great new shops and restaurants by attending their official grand opening event on Thursday, November 9. Also check out the spotlight on The Steven Graves Insurance Agency, a friendly and independent insurance agency that works for you. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.
If you would like to advertise in this newsletter and reach more than 35,000 captive residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding communities, many different opportunities are available to you. It’s the most efficient and cost effective form of advertising in this area so please email sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more information.
This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.
Our Texas Tornado plays this weekend on Saturday and Sunday night. Visit www.tornadohockey.com to purchase tickets and for more information.
Do you like to write? I am looking for a new monthly column for the newsletter, similar to the “Advice From Dr. Checo” column. It has to be an informative topic for our readers and this is a great opportunity for you to showcase and grow your business. Just ask Dr. Checo what kind of positive impact it has had on his business. In any event, I have two advertorial spots available for a monthly column and you would need to make a minimum three month commitment. If interested, please email sales@mattlafatamarketing.com with your idea and we will get back to you with details and pricing.
If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than thirty-five thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send them to me at matt@mattlafata.com so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.
Newsletter Sponsor – The Shops at Starwood – Now Open!!!:
Shopping in Frisco will never be the same thanks to the vision of Kirk Hermansen of Hermansen Land Development. On the Southwest corner of the Dallas North Tollway and Lebanon, Hermansen Land Development has built Frisco’s first mixed-use Specialty Center, The Shops at Starwood.
Now open, The Shops at Starwood includes over 50,000 square feet of retail and luxury office space, inspired by a classic Italian look that includes a promenade, an eye catching fountain, and ornamental landscaping.
“Our goal was to provide the surrounding residents and employees a unique and relaxing shopping, dining and office experience unlike anything else in the area,” said Kirk Hermansen. “At the same time, since Frisco is very family orientated community, we wanted to create a comfortable gathering place for the entire family. The rich architectural schemes, reminiscent of the coastal European design, offers that luxury for families.”
The office space includes 10’ ceilings, French doors, balconies and spectacular views.
The current retail tenants include Little Heiress a Children’s Botique, DFW Diamonds Design Studio, Kotta Sushi Lounge, It’s a Grind Coffee, Learning Express, Starwood Nail Salon, Piccomolo Italian Ice Cream, Bonnie Ruth’s Café Trottoir et Patisserie, Josephine’s Wine Bar and Bistro, and Green Peridot Aveda Concept Salon. Several additional, one of a kind, tenants are being considered.
Hermansen Land Development, Inc. and the tenants of The Shops at Starwood, invite you to join them for An Evening Under the Stars, on Thursday November 9th for a grand opening to be held at the center from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The ribbon cutting and The Fountain dedication benefiting the fight against Neuroblastoma begin at 6:00 pm.
“The Grand Opening Event is both a celebration for the residents, and a chance for the tenants to show off their unique goods and services,” said Mr. Hermansen. “Complete with live entertainment, food and wine sampling and festive ambiance, we hope to truly set the tone for the experience at The Shops at Starwood.”
Also, please bring your family back to The Shops at Starwood Saturday November 11th to hang out with Radio Disney. There will be plenty to do including a kids runway show put on by Little Heiress, a cake decorating contest hosted by Bonnie Ruth’s Café, as well as live entertainment from Katie Painter, the Thro’ Backs and Stephanie Crews.
The Shops at Starwood is being developed by Hermansen Land Development. The exclusive leasing agent for the project is Real Street Properties. For information about The Shops at Starwood, Hermansen Land Development and leasing opportunities please visit www.hermansenlanddevelopment.com or call 214. 373. 0220.

Spotlight on…Steven Graves Insurance Agency:
This interview was conducted with business owner, and Frisco resident, Steven Graves…
Tell us about your business, Steven
Steven Graves Insurance Agency, started in 1995. Our approach of offering personal and professional service to our customers has resulted in our becoming a full-service agency. By that I mean that we serve individuals, families, and businesses based not only in Dallas, but anywhere in Texas.
As an independent insurance agency, we don’t work for any insurance company;
we work for you. From a carefully selected group of financially sound,
reputable insurance companies and we work with you to determine the company
offering the best coverage at the best possible price. Should you ever have a
loss, we’ll work on your side to submit your claim and follow through to see
that you get fair and prompt payment.
So what makes you different from your competition?
We absolutely don't believe in pressure sales techniques or calling you at night and attempting to sell you another product. We have always treated clients like our family. As a customer you can and will be treated with respect. We will only recommend the coverage that you need and give you time to think before you buy. After we provide you with a quote, you will not receive harassing phone calls from us pressuring you to buy. We will wait for your call. Keep in mind, unlike so many insurance agencies that only provide you with a quote from one company – often forcing you into a policy that doesn’t meet your needs – our agency represents almost a hundred companies that allow us to find the coverage that best fits you and your needs.
How does someone find you?
We have centrally located our office just outside of downtown Dallas. However, there is never a need to come into the office. We can always provide you with fast quotes over the phone and fax or mail the applications to you for signature. It's that easy. You can always visit us at www.StevenGraves.NET
Steven, since I love to eat, tell us what is your favorite restaurant in this area?
Having a large list of restaurants I enjoy in Frisco, I’ll limit myself to my two favorites. Topping my list is Fortuna Grill at 8549 Gaylord Parkway. For those times that I’m looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, I head over to the Cotton Patch Café, located at 3231 Preston Road.
Ok, I always get hungry after hearing people tell me about their favorite restaurants. Since I also love music, tell us what kind of music are you listening to these days?
When relaxing or working my radio tuned to easy listening music. If out having fun, I enjoy a variety of singers, Reba McEntire, Elton John, Kenny Chesney, Dolly Parton, Celine Dion, Cher.
Hopefully you got to see Kenny Chesney when he was here in Frisco this summer. Ok, anything else you want to tell us?
Giving back to the community is important for everyone to do. Working with schools and helping kids who are having difficulties with math, reading & writing or just being a positive role model to a young person is rewarding to me.
I encourage people to take an active role in their community, volunteer with their city to improve parks and neighborhoods. If you see trash in a park or your neighborhood, pick it up, report maintenance issues to the city; work with the city in a positive way. If we all pitch in, then Frisco can and will always be a place we are all proud to call home.
Matt’s Blog:
Blog - an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page
I started a blog a few weeks ago and then stopped due to time constraints. The feature was well received so I will try to include it whenever I can.
Since the last time I wrote, about a month ago, I took a trip to Boston for work and was able to spend a few extra days visiting with the folks and enjoying the sights and weather. Go Patriots!
A few weeks ago, we went to an Aerosmith CD release party put on by Jack-FM somewhere in Richardson. I thought it was going to be a CD of new music but it was just another in a long line of greatest hits albums that Aerosmith seems to put out every few years with the same songs on it.
Also that week, on October 19, we stopped by the grand opening/ribbon cutting for Independent Bank of Texas over at Hall Office Park. It was quite well attended and a mariachi band serenaded us.
That following weekend, we drove down to South Texas for the weekend and had a great time.
My youngest son is playing youth soccer so I got to see a few games over the past few weeks, which are always fun. Last Friday night, we celebrated my middle child’s birthday as he turned 12.
Last Saturday, we all went to the FC Dallas game, which was exciting, except for the final outcome where FC Dallas lost and their season ended. The MLS Cup will be next weekend at Pizza Hut Park and you should try and get tickets before they are all gone.
Also last weekend, last Thursday and Sunday to be exact, my daughter and I attended the Texas Tornado games. She is a huge hockey (and baseball) fan and writes a column for my newsletter now about the Tornado. Tornado games are so exciting!
Last week we ate out at Randy’s Steakhouse on Main Street, which is always a great treat, especially when Randy takes the time to come out and say Hi. Earlier this week we ate out at Josephine’s Wine Bar and Bistro at the Shops of Starwood. Both of these restaurants are great so I hope you get to visit both of them soon.
Also last week, we started working out with a trainer, which has been fantastic, and I will talk more about that in the future.
The social calendar is starting to fill up quickly with the approaching holidays so I am sure my schedule is about to get really nuts.
That’s enough for now. I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy the newsletter!
Population of Frisco:
The estimated residential population is 91,429 people as of November 1, 2006.
It’s A Grind Coffee House:
It’s A Grind is a unique franchise concept that applies the popular 'Cheers' neighborhood tavern approach to the coffee house setting. Our coffee house is more upscale and comfortable than the traditional, wood table-and-chair décor found at most coffee chains. Franchise owner, Marchand Froschheuser wanted to offer this community a warm, friendly environment filled with upholstered wingback chairs, a cozy fireplace, blues and jazz motif and music, and other living room-like touches, to create an atmosphere unlike any other coffee house.
We feature the highest quality fresh roasted specialty whole bean coffees, iced and blended coffee drinks, specialty coffee and espresso-based drinks including mochas, lattes and cappuccinos. Also offered are a variety of fresh bakery and dessert items such as bagels, scones and muffins. It's A Grind roasts its beans in small batches. The unique roasting allows us to provide an Espresso for lattes, cappuccinos, mochas and other drinks that will never lose its outstanding flavor.
The focus on friendly customer service and providing an outstanding experience for our customers permeates throughout the entire organization. Marty Cox, It’s A Grind founder, originally came up with the It's A Grind concept after an unpleasant, unfriendly experience at a local coffee house that he frequented in his Southern California neighborhood. All It’s A Grind employees and franchisees possess exceptional people skills and have a passion to serve others. For example, come to It’s A Grind and order a bagel and we will offer to toast it for you. Order a muffin or scone and we will gladly warm it up with a smile. Our success is directly tied to our customer’s experience, not just our outstanding coffee. Unlike most coffee houses, you will find the owner actively involved and working in the store and community. I am really proud of our community and the citizens’ eagerness to support locally owned businesses. We may not beat out the “Green Giant” and be on every corner, but we want to be the number one choice!
It’s A Grind Coffee House is now open at The Shops at Starwood at the SW corner of Lebanon and the Tollway. Stop by and visit them today.

Or you can contact one of the volunteer coordinators directly, Jon Wilson at jonw@dbu.edu or Jenny Orndorff at jenny@tornadohockey.com.
Long time Frisco residents remember the annual homecoming parade as one of the big events of a small but fast growing town, where thousands of Frisco residents and families lined Main Street to honor the schools, football teams, bands and community organizations that participated. It has been a tradition that grew each year and is one that helped us to keep the “Small Town Feel”.
Since we have the fastest growing school district in the country for a city our size, and now that we have four high schools, representatives from the City of Frisco, the FISD and Frisco Chamber of Commerce met last year to see how we could keep this tradition going and even expand it. The result is what we hope will be a new tradition-The Frisco Community Parade. November 11 will be the date of our first Community Parade and will feature all four high school bands, football teams, Drill Teams and other sports teams, Homecoming Kings and Queens, other school and community groups and numerous businesses. In addition, the Frisco RoughRiders, Texas Tornado, Dallas Stars and FC Dallas have all agreed to participate with their mascots. This year the theme will be a “Salute to the Troops” in honor of Veteran’s Day. It will give us an opportunity as a community to express our appreciation to all those who serve and protect our nation.
The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m., starting at the south end of Frisco Street near Pizza Hut Park and will move east on Main Street to North County Road. The parade route will be along the eastbound lanes of Main Street. With the expansion and widening of the street and addition of tree-lined medians, there will be room for thousands of spectators. The tradition of the Mayor and City Council riding in our Fire Engines will continue and this year our Grand Marshall will be Brig. General Mike Cates, U.S. Army and a Frisco High School graduate. We will also have military vehicles and a possible fly-over of planes during the parade. Anyone who is currently serving in the military or is a veteran is urged to wear their uniform and participate in the parade. You can go on the web site at www.Friscoparade.com to get additional information on the parade and how to participate.
We are urging businesses, organizations or groups to be in the parade. The cost to participate is $ 200 for business and adult organizations and $ 150 for youth organizations. Schools, non-profit organizations, Military and city entrees will not be charged to enter. We are also looking for volunteers to help and to be stationed along the parade route to make certain the crowds are kept back from the parade vehicles and to help promote the parade.
We hope to continue to build the parade to become one of the biggest and best in North Texas. At some point, we hope to add college bands, floats and other exciting activities as part of the event. We hope that you and your family will come out on November 11 to enjoy the parade. If you are a business or organization, we want you to participate and encourage you to consider building a float! Some of my fondest memories from high school and college were the “float making parties” that helped bond the students, parents and organizations together. Be creative and make this new parade the start of a NEW TRADITION for Frisco-The Frisco Community Parade.

Veterans Day Event:
The Friends of the Frisco Public Library is hosting a Veteran’s Day Luncheon on Saturday, November 11 at Noon following the “Salute to the Troops” Parade that begins at 10:00am.
Our guest speaker will be Ray Hildreth author of Hill 488. Mr. Hildreth was a member of an eighteen man Marine Recon Patrol that had been positioned on top of Hill 488, approximately 25 miles southwest of Da Nang. On June 15th, 1966, the Marine patrol received a report that an estimated battalion size enemy force was in their area and could be headed their way. The platoon was placed on 100% alert.
During that night and the next morning every member of the Recon Platoon was either wounded or killed. The enemy paid a high price as well. The sixteen Marines, two Navy Corpsman, and their close air support wounded or killed approximately 200 of the enemy force. Some reports say that the Recon Platoon was out numbered by twenty to one. Tornado Talk…by Junior Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:
Hello Frisco,
This past weekend your Texas Tornado had a big 3 game series against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs who were then tied with the Tornado for 3rd place. After a three game sweep by the Tornado, they have sole possession of third place and are only two points out of first, which is currently occupied by the St. Louis Bandits. The Bandits will be in town on November 10 and 11, which could give the Tornado the opportunity to take over first place. Don’t miss those games!
On their first game of the series, Thursday night, the Tornado won 5-2 in a very “pushy, shovey” game, mostly with the opposing goalie who was mouthing off at the Tornado players all night. Like usual, the Tornado struck first and Stephane Da Costa took credit for it. Fairbanks returned it as they scored two minutes later and evened the score. Dylan Cooper scored the follow up goal on a penalty shot and while shorthanded to lead 2-1 at the end of the period. Nielsson Arcibal scored one on a power play only two minutes into the period. As the score now became 3-1, Fairbanks switched their goalies. Only two minutes later, Stephane Da Costa had his second of the night with assists from Ryan Fuller and Tom Brooks. Fairbanks switched their goalie again, back to the starter. 20 seconds after he came in, the goalie pushed Lyon Messier a bit so some of the Tornado got upset about that so there came the fighting and penalties. After that it was pushing and shoving from their goalie the whole night. Ryan Fuller won the team revenge by putting a nice one in the net on a power play to make it 5-1. Tom Brooks and Colin Long got the assists. There wasn’t much action in the 3rd period except a goal from Fairbanks with 3 minutes left to leave the score 5-2. The 3 stars of the game were Stephane Da Costa, Tom Brooks and Thomas Tragust.
After an exhilarating win from a heated game, the Tornado took the win again on Saturday night, winning 6-3. The first period was low scoring with only one goal a piece. Just two minutes into the game, Jake Newton scored his second goal of the season for the Tornado on a power play and it was unassisted. Fairbanks tied it up halfway through the first period on a power play as well.. Dylan Cooper had a goal six minutes into the second period, on a power play, with assists from Stephane Da Costa and Ryan Fuller. Justin King put one in about a minute later while shorthanded. Ryan Fuller picked up another assist making the score 3-1 Tornado. Fairbanks struck halfway through the period again to make it 3-2. Ryan Fuller was on fire as he had his own goal on a power play with assists coming from Tom Brooks and Brian Reagan. At the end of the second period, the score was 4-2. Starting off the third period nicely, Julian Mikola scored one with assists coming from Adam Flink and Dylan Cooper to push up the score 5-2. But, Fairbanks had another one with 30 seconds left in the game to make it 5-3. Amazingly with 14 seconds left, Tom Brooks put one in with assists from Ryan Fuller and Rob Blanchette to ensure a 6-3 win. The 3 stars of the game were Ryan Fuller, Dylan Cooper and Colin Long.
Close to winning the series, they needed to play harder than ever on Sunday night to get closer to first place and put some distance between them and Fairbanks in the standings. Well, luck was on their side as the boys swept it winning 5-3. Of course, your Tornado scored first with Justin King claiming it and Nielsson Arcibal getting the assist. Fairbanks evened it out with only 47 seconds left in the 1st. But the Tornado always have an answer as Stephane Da Costa picked up his 3rd goal of the series with only 1.7 seconds left. Colin Long and Tom Brooks assisted on the goal. In the second period there was a bit of a conflict when Paul Yovanic scored a goal BUT apparently he ran into the goalie and the net came off at the same time so the goal didn’t count and the goalie swung a punch at Yovanic. Stephane Da Costa made it 3-1 with assists from Lyon Messier and Ryan Fuller. Fairbanks had two goals in a row 3 minutes a part. So it was now tied 3-3.Mike Cifelli scored his 1st career goal at the end of the second. Nielsson Arcibal finished them off strong with the 5th goal of the night as the final was 5-3.
Also, congratulations to Ryan Fuller for getting NAHL player of the week with 2 goals and 5 assist.
They’ve got two home games this Friday night and Saturday night, against the Alaska Avalanche, both at 7:30. On Friday night, everyone gets a special treat being able to see NASCAR superstar, Brian Vickers, and the Tornado will be donning special NASCAR-themed jerseys, which they will be auctioning off after the game. Don’t miss Saturday night’s game either as every fan will get a Tornado team poster to hang on your wall. To get tickets for any upcoming games, call 972-335-9800 or visit www.tornadohockey.com.
