Dr Michelson RC2

On October 4, 2007, I was able to attend the grand opening of Elite OB/GYN with Dr. Lauren Michelsen (left) and Dr. Catherine Holt (right). The goal of Elite OB/GYN is to focus on providing the most up-to-date, personalized care for women throughout all stages of their lives.  Their services include gynecological and obstetrical care as well as mild infertility.

For their grand opening, Elite OB/GYN partnered with Frisco Family Services Center to support their annual gala.  Frisco Family Services and Boardwalk Audi have teamed up to raffle a 2008 Audi TT for the Gala.  The car was on display at Elite’s grand opening for guests to buy a raffle ticket to win the 2008 Audi TT.   Dr. Lauren Michelsen and Dr. Catherine Holt wanted to provide this opportunity to show their support to the community of Frisco and Frisco Family Service Center.

The celebration also served as Elite OB/GYN’s ribbon cutting to announce the opening of the practice to Frisco.

Elite OB/GYN is located at Centennial Medical Pavilion II, suite 401.  Drs. Michelsen and Holt have privileges at Centennial Medical Center and Baylor Medical Center of Frisco.   Both hospitals are equipped with level III neonatal intensive care units to care for infants born premature.

Dr. Lauren Michelsen and Dr. Catherine Holt are committed to providing excellence in healthcare to women in Frisco and the surrounding communities.   Let the physicians and the staff at Elite OB/GYN take care of you throughout all stages of your life.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. I noticed new utility poles along Teel near Panther Creek. Why are the companies installing new poles (less attractive, risk of lines knocked down, etc) instead of putting the lines underground?

A. Per Ron Patterson, Assistant City Manager:

The bottom line is that the electric and cable utilities are unwilling to pay the additional costs of burying their utility lines. Additionally, there has been recent legal action by utility companies against cities that have passed ordinances requiring the lines to be buried. One such example is where Oncor Electric Delivery took the City of Allen and a Coalition of Cities before the Public Utility Commission (“PUC”) to challenge their ability to require the lines to be buried. The Commission held that the cities could not place such requirement on the utility without the city (you the tax payer) paying the cost for burying such lines. This decision was challenged by Allen and the Coalition of Cities before Third District Court of Appeals and the court found in favor of the PUC upholding their ruling thus precluding cities from further blanket regulation of the burial of utilities.

This Day in History – Sistine Chapel Ceiling Opens to the Public: November 1, 1512

From the History Channel…

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, one of Italian artist Michelangelo's finest works, is exhibited to the public for the first time.

Michelangelo Buonarroti, the greatest of the Italian Renaissance artists, was born in the small village of Caprese in 1475. The son of a government administrator, he grew up in Florence, a center of the early Renaissance movement, and became an artist's apprentice at age 13. Demonstrating obvious talent, he was taken under the wing of Lorenzo de' Medici, the ruler of the Florentine republic and a great
patron of the arts. After demonstrating his mastery of sculpture in such works as the Pieta (1498) and David (1504), he was called to Rome in 1508 to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel--the chief consecrated space in the Vatican.

Michelangelo's epic ceiling frescoes, which took several years to complete, are among his most memorable works. Central in a complex system of decoration featuring numerous figures are nine panels devoted to biblical world history. The most famous of these is The Creation of Adam, a painting in which the arms of God and Adam are stretching toward each other. In 1512, Michelangelo completed the work.

After 15 years as an architect in Florence, Michelangelo returned to
Rome in 1534, where he would work and live for the rest of his life. That year saw his painting of the The Last Judgment on the wall above the altar in the Sistine Chapel for Pope Paul III. The massive painting depicts Christ's damnation of sinners and blessing of the virtuous and is regarded as a masterpiece of early Mannerism.

Michelangelo worked until his death in 1564 at the age of 88. In addition to his major artistic works, he produced numerous other sculptures, frescoes, architectural designs, and drawings, many of which are unfinished and some of which are lost. In his lifetime, he was celebrated as Europe's greatest living artist, and today he is held up as one of the greatest artists of all time, as exalted in the visual arts as William Shakespeare is in literature or Ludwig van Beethoven is in music.

November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month:

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder named for German physician Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906. Scientists have learned a great deal about Alzheimer’s disease in the century since Dr. Alzheimer first drew attention to it. Today we know that Alzheimer’s:

Is a progressive and fatal brain disease. More than 5 million Americans now have Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. Today it is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States. For more information, see Symptoms or Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Is the most common form of dementia, a general term for the loss of memory and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Vascular dementia, another common type, is caused by reduced blood flow to parts of the brain. In mixed dementia, Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia occur together. For more information about other causes of dementia, please see Related Diseases.

Has no current cure. But treatments for symptoms, combined with the right services and support, can make life better for the millions of Americans living with Alzheimer’s. We’ve learned most of what we know about Alzheimer’s in the last 15 years. There is an accelerating worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, or prevent it from developing. Learn more about recent progress in Alzheimer science and research funded by the

Alzheimer’s Association in the Research section.

Just like the rest of our bodies, our brains change as we age. Most of us notice some slowed thinking and occasional problems remembering certain things. However, serious memory loss, confusion and other major changes in the way our minds work are not a normal part of aging. They may be a sign that brain cells are failing.

The brain has 100 billion nerve cells (neurons). Each nerve cell communicates with many others to form networks. Nerve cell networks have special jobs. Some are involved in thinking, learning and remembering. Others help us see, hear and smell. Still others tell our muscles when to move.

To do their work, brain cells operate like tiny factories. They take in supplies, generate energy, construct equipment and get rid of waste. Cells also process and store information. Keeping everything running requires coordination as well as large amounts of fuel and oxygen.

In Alzheimer’s disease, parts of the cell’s factory stop running well. Scientists are not sure exactly where the trouble starts. But just like a real factory, backups and breakdowns in one system cause problems in other areas. As damage spreads, cells lose their ability to do their jobs well. Eventually, they die.

Visit the Alzheimer’s Association web site for more information.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

This week’s newsletter is Proudly Sponsored by DeBonair Custom Cleaning who is celebrating their two year anniversary here in Frisco.  Also check out the Spotlight on Solare Spa and Café, one of my favorite places here in Frisco, as well as the “Superb in the Burbs” contest that is going on through November 8. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

I’d like to congratulate my friends, Pastors Patrick and Mark of Waters Edge Church, for their wonderful grand opening ceremony this past weekend. We were fortunate to be able to attend their service on Sunday and what a wonderful Church community they have built. Read last week’s newsletter for a great and inspiring spotlight about this wonderful Church.

Congratulations also to our FC Dallas soccer team for their huge playoff win against Houston last weekend. Best of luck this Friday night down in Houston!

Don’t forget to change your clocks back one hour this weekend or you will be showing up an hour early to everything!

There is a very important Collin County bond election coming up on November 6, with early voting currently underway. Frisco stands to gain tremendously with the passage of these bonds so please get out and show your support by voting FOR the Collin County bonds. As Collin County Commissioner Joe Jaynes stated, “We will be receiving over $600 million in projects funded from SH 121.  Our county bond proposition for transportation is $235 million.  By partnering with our cities, that amount will be over $400 million.  With our 121 money plus our partnerships through the bond package we will be looking at over $1 billion that can be used for much needed road expansion—all without a tax rate increase.” Visit www.collincountybonds.org for more information and read a message from Frisco Mayor Mike Simpson later in the newsletter about the importance of this bond election to Frisco. There are also 16 propositions on the ballot and you can learn more about where to vote.

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 40,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.

DeBonair Custom Cleaning is Celebrating Our Two Year Anniversary in Frisco!

The DeBonair team would like to sincerely thank all of our loyal clients for giving us an opportunity to serve you and referring us to many of your friends and family.

We have certainly learned what clients want and what they do not want in regards to a cleaning service.  Some of the most common concerns heard while visiting potential clients are:

·         My service breaks things and does not tell me

·         My service does not show up when they are supposed to

·         My service uses the wrong products on my surfaces and causes damage

·         My service does not provide employees that speak English and I can’t communicate with them

·         My service does not put things back in their correct place

·         My service sends too many people into my home to clean

Meeting With Clients:

Debbie Childers, DeBonair owner, will first meet with you in your home to discuss your specific requirements.  Afterwards, she will select an employee that will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining your home on a consistent basis.

Customization and Service:

A customized list regarding your cleaning expectations and needs are developed while the owner visits with you in your home.  Reminder calls and follow-up calls are standard procedure at DeBonair.

DeBonair Employees:

All employees speak English and are U.S. citizens.  Reference and background checks are conducted on all employees.   DeBonair Custom Cleaning is fully insured and employees are bonded.  DeBonair does not send in teams to clean your home.  We offer a very personalized service.

Spotlight on Solare Spa and Café:

This interview was conducted with my friend, and the owner of Solare Spa and Café, Rosanne Best. Erika and I really enjoy eating at Solare and highly recommend it…

Rosanne, tell us about your business and why you decided to introduce this concept to our community:

Matt, I have been in Texas for 14 years waiting for a place like Solare to open.  Since it never happened, I decided to do it myself.   Solare is about slowing down the pace in life and I think we all need that whether we work full time or stay at home.  It's also about taking care of your self, eating healthy and reducing your stress level.  You know in order to accomplish these things, a person must be intentional about it and everything we do at Solare is designed to intentionally accomplish that.  I have a professional background in healthcare and my brother is a chef.  When I told him about my idea a few years ago, he loved it and decided to move here to help me make it a reality.

My brother and I grew up in a large, closely knit family that loves to cook.  Eating freshly prepared meals with plenty of vegetables was normal for us.  Our heritage includes belonging to a Native American tribe, which is rich in culture.  By combining our talents and dedicating it to everything our great, great grandmother, Maria Solares stood for makes this place not only unique, but quite special.

Solare is dedicated to bringing back freshly prepared food and a sense of community.  When I first moved here I was shocked at the families who made fast food a daily staple.    I am not a fan of fast food.  In fact, Solare is everything fast food is not.

Speaking of community, it is not unusual for our customers to see their neighbors at Solare and strike up a conversation while sitting next to one another.  My husband and daughters are really part of our Solare "family" too, often pitching in to help or simply hanging out with us!  We have been open for a little over a year and a half and we have developed a strong loyal clientele who have given us confirmation that Solare is a perfect fit for Frisco.

Great story, Rosanne. So how does someone find you?

We are located on the North West corner of Lebanon and Legacy, right next to Kroger, adjacent to the Starwood community. Our website is www.solarespa.com.  You can view all of the spa and cafe menus online.

Rosanne, I know you are really active in various endeavors, using Solare as a "home base" of sorts. That’s something that is so important to me as well. Can you tell me more about those activities?

I enjoy helping others, especially here in Frisco.  The space on the cafe' side is beautiful and because we had the space available after lunch, there have been many celebrations held at Solare.

We've hosted a variety of events including, men's bible studies, book club luncheons, the launching of a women's ministry, birthday parties, business events and presentations by local physicians on health related topics.

Currently, the one organization that I am heavily involved with is, The Boys and Girls Club of Collin County. We are working toward raising awareness of their less than optimal facilities here in Frisco and then helping to raise funds to improve the programs and facilities needed to serve the children.  I can't wait for the November 3rd Gala to be held at the Embassy Suites here in Frisco, featuring the Pointer Sisters!  Solare is going to be the VIP sponsor for the reception.  I have a few tickets left if anyone is interested.

That’s fantastic. I always love to see people give back to their community. Rosanne, everybody loves a special. Do you have any specials you can offer our readers?

I love specials too, that is why you will always see various specials going on throughout the various seasons.  A really fun contest going on now through November 8th is “Superb in the Burbs”.  It’s a collaboration between five business owners and we are offering one lucky lady a chance to win over $2,000 in goods and services related to “taking care of yourself”.

Visit www.superbintheburbs.com and register online, or make sure to visit one of the participating vendors:  Solare’, Green Peridot Salon, Le Beau Visage Med Spa or Sussies Boutique.

Fantastic! I love eating at Solare and this should certainly get others to come out and try you. Another great passion of mine is music so I have got to ask. What kind of music do you like to listen to?

My music interests much like my food interests would have to be put in the "eclectic" category.   I enjoy classic rock, the Eagles, Journey and I'm a big fan of Sting.  Currently, I discovered Paula Cole and her new release, Courage, it's awesome.

In his early years, my husband, Von was a Jazz musician.  We have collections of Miles Davis, Abbey Lincoln & John Coltrane.  Our two daughters keep us current with the contemporary music so it's not unusual for me to belt out a Fergie song or two!

I love all kinds of music myself and I didn’t know that about Von. You should have him walk around the restaurant with a saxophone or something to entertain the diners. Rosanne, thanks again for your time today. Anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Three nights a week we are offering dinners with a unique twist.  Take a break from the hectic pace and bring the kids on Thursday night and be entertained by our wonderful magician, Jeff, who is also a balloon artist. On Friday, enjoy a night of live jazz music played by a few very talented musicians from UNT.  Flamenco guitar is my new addition to Saturdays. Come out and meet Ulrich who comes to us via Denmark, via UNT!
