We attended a great event at the RoughRiders ballpark this past weekend. “Casino Royale” was a James Bond-themed night of entertainment. As a huge James Bond fan, I loved the way they set up themed-rooms and played Bond music such as “For Your Eyes Only” and “Nobody Does it Better”.
I know it is a little early to be thinking about baseball, although I am really excited to be watching my Boston Red Sox in the World Series, but think about giving the gift of RoughRiders season tickets this holiday season. No, the RoughRiders didn’t ask me to say that. I just know how fortunate we are to have such a great ballpark in our city and plus, I couldn’t think of anything else witty to say since I am really tired tonight. Enjoy the newsletter!
This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
The October Citizen of the Month is…Mr. Coy Miller! Coy was nominated by Frisco resident Ronda Figueroa and here is what she had to say about Coy: “I would like to nominate Mr. Coy Miller, owner of Pardner’s garden and feed store at Alpha Ave. and Main. Wow, want a dedicated man and super friendly soul he is!! I have been doing business at his shop since 1994. He has been so willing to help me get my yard in shape and has never once shown the least bit of frustration or unhappiness. He greets everyone with a smile and knows many of his customers by name. I’ve wanted to nominate him for awhile but never took the time. He really is such an honest, caring, and respectful gentleman. I love to visit his shop to see all the new crafts and beautiful plantings. Most importantly, I love to be greeted with such warmness. Please consider him as he most deserves to be honored for his 30 years of service to our community.”
Congratulations to Mr. Coy Miller! If you have somebody that you would like to nominate as a Citizen of the Month, please send us an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.
City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:
Q. In light of the recent permit
given to Bank of America for the site next to Target (next to the
Tollway), is there any criteria that seems to be exceeded by these
numerous establishments?
A. The City has no specific criteria that would limit many different land uses such as restaurants, shopping centers, banks, drug stores, etc. The number and location of businesses are typically limited by market conditions and the growth objectives of specific corporations.
This Day in History – October 25, 1964: Rolling Stones on Ed Sullivan
From the History Channel…
On this day, British rock group the Rolling Stones appear on Ed Sullivan's TV variety show. It was the first time American audiences had seen the Stones.
Founding Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met during grade school and ran into each other when Jagger was studying at the London School of Economics and Richards was at art school. They formed the Rolling Stones in 1962 and were soon playing a steady series of nightclubs and bars in London. They released their first single in Britain in 1963. Before long, the Stones became known as the anti-Beatles: They were long-haired, grungy, and wild, while the Beatles seemed wholesome and safe. A string of drug-related arrests plagued various band members--Brian Jones' drug problems probably led to his death in 1969, and Keith Richards struggled with heroin addiction before getting clean in 1977.
Meanwhile, the band steadily released hit albums and songs that became instant classics. Richards and Jagger began writing songs together, and after 1966 they wrote almost all the group's material. The group first topped the U.S. charts in 1965 with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." Hit singles in 1966 included "Paint It Black," "19th Nervous Breakdown," and "Get Off My Cloud." They released hit-packed albums throughout the 1970s and managed to maintain their following even as they approached middle age. In the 1980s, Jagger and Richards both released various solo albums but continued to work together. Steel Wheels, the group's 1989 album, sold two million copies, and the tour grossed $140 million. The band's 1994 album, Voodoo Lounge, won Best Rock Album, the Stones' first Grammy.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month:
So far this month we have covered Breast Cancer Awareness, Domestic Violence Awareness and Energy Awareness…
Congress designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).
This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month."
Since 2001, the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) in the U.S. Department of Labor has been responsible for planning NDEAM activities and materials to increase the public's awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Various programs carried out throughout the month also highlight the specific employment barriers that still need to be addressed and removed. ODEP provides information online that can to be used for National Disability Employment Awareness Month, as well as other educational programs throughout the year on its Publications webpage.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:
If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.
Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
All the opinions, endorsements or recommendations in this newsletter are mine alone and they do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of any organization or group with whom I am affiliated or the individuals who are a part of such organizations and groups. How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

With our 121 money plus our partnerships through the bond package we will be looking at over $1 billion that can be used for much needed road expansion—all without a tax rate increase.” Visit www.collincountybonds.org for more information. Spotlight On…Water’s Edge Church:
Read below for a GREAT interview with Pastor Mark and Pastor Patrick from Water’s Edge church here in Frisco. They recently built a brand new facility across from Curtsinger Elementary School (Coit/Jereme Trail, although they have been meeting for years at the school) and have their grand opening this weekend. We are excited to check it out this Sunday and hope you will, too!
Pastor Patrick and Pastor Mark, please tell us about your Church:
Water’s Edge is a down-to-earth, refreshingly engaging church. We’re large enough to be able to offer a wide variety of faith growth and service opportunities, but not so large that a person gets lost in the mix. We believe with everything in us that God has purposefully put every man, woman, and child on earth for a reason, and we know that it is our duty to help each soul find fulfillment and fullness in the life that God has marked out for them. We’re not here to get people to make our church great; rather, we’re here to empower people to live great lives in their homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods. We believe life to be a fascinating journey, and we know that a person’s journey will make the most sense and have the most joy when the presence, love, and wisdom of God are experienced on a daily basis. Our ultimate goal is to get people hooked into an active faith journey, embracing the full life that God has promised we will always find in Him.
I love hearing about your passion for God and the message we can all get from being closer to God. With all of the places of worship in Frisco, what’s unique or different about Water’s Edge?
Churches sometimes put off the vibe that you have to be living the right life before you enter their doors. Jesus would laugh at that expectation. Our Savior is the very one who said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Pastor Mark, myself, and all the leaders of Water’s Edge certainly try to model a good life, but we’re also extremely honest about our real and ongoing struggles with sin. When a church can come to grips with the fact that it constantly needs to keep the focus on the Savior Jesus, because it is and will always be made up of sinful people, then the transforming power of God’s forgiveness rules the day. As our church family continually focuses on Christ’s complete and continuing forgiveness, we will be truly poised to be the neighbors, citizens, and servants that God has put us on earth to be.
You guys are so right on, in my opinion, with what people are looking for when looking for a place to worship. So, you’ve just built a new Church. How does someone find you?

Pastor Patrick, this is the part of the spotlight where people get to know a little more about you. One of my passions is music. What kind of music do you like to listen to?
Organ hymns of course. Just kidding! I’m an eclectic kind of music lover, and you’ll find pop, country, soft rock, hard rock, and even some old school hip-hop on my ipod. And with two young daughters in the house, Hannah Montana and High School Musical are starting to drive me a little crazy! I do have to confess that my favorite song of all time is “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns and Roses. Believe me, if I could ever learn that opening guitar riff, you might just hear it in worship!
Great taste of music and I like to crank “Sweet Child of Mine” every once in a while as well. Another passion of mine is food and eating at the great restaurants we have in Frisco. What are some of your favorites?
Pastor Mark and I try to book as many lunch appointments as possible at Scotty P’s. You ought to see Pastor Mark scarf down their chili-cheese burger! I’m also a big fan of Manny’s Tex-Mex in downtown Frisco. And if you’re looking for a nice pint of Guinness, The Irish Rover is a good spot.
Ok, is there anything else you would like to share with readers of this newsletter?
Honestly, we really don’t concern ourselves with how big Water’s Edge gets or doesn’t get. But we do care with everything in us that our fellow Frisco (and North Texas) neighbors find a church home that is authentic, engaging, and empowering. If that church home turns out to be Water’s Edge…then awesome. But if it turns out to be another local Christian Church, we celebrate that reality just as wholeheartedly. There’s one phrase that defines our congregation’s existence more than anything else, and that’s, “Eternity Matters Most!’ So we pray that everyone reading this interview will embrace God’s calling to reprioritize the spiritual side of life, and make the main thing the main thing once again. “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world yet forfeit his soul?” In that vein, we beg you to find a church home that can be your homebase for the ongoing journey of faith!
Have a great Fall, and may the presence and power of God rule your days!
Pastor Patrick and Pastor Mark Water’s Edge Family Church, Frisco
