Dear Friends,

This week’s newsletter is sponsored by John Gay, CFP with Frisco Financial Planning (FFP).  John has over 12 years of experience helping families with all areas of personal finance including investments, life insurance, retirement and education planning.  Also check out the spotlight on Attorney Marc May with the law firm of Gay, McCall, Isaacks, Gordon, May & Roberts, P.C. He’s got a great special offer for newsletter readers. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

If you would like to advertise in this newsletter and reach more than 35,000 captive residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding communities, many different opportunities are available to you. It’s the most efficient and cost effective form of advertising in this area so please email sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more information.

This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.

Please remember that although we got several inches of rain earlier this week, we are still in a serious drought condition. When it does rain, please do your part and manually shut your automatic sprinkler off to help save water. With a few inches of water and cooler weather, nobody needs to water this week and we need to be very diligent throughout the winter to avoid further restrictions next summer.

The number of folks running red lights is still very high (as you can see in the police report later in the newsletter), creating an ongoing dangerous situation. One thing I saw the other day, that I have seen before, is when people are at what I call “double lights” (I don’t really know the technical term) and the furthest one turns green, but the closest one is still red, and the driver proceeds. For instance, I was sitting at the light on SH 121, at Preston, heading East. The further set of lights turned green but the lights right in front of me were still red. However, the car next to me proceeded through the red light creating a potentially hazardous condition. Just always pay attention and watch out for other people.

Don’t forget about the Frisco Storytelling Festival this Friday and Saturday at the City Hall Plaza. For more information, visit http://www.friscostorytellingfestival.org/ or read the press release in the early part of this newsletter. This is a signature event for Frisco that is very unique and great family entertainment.

Our Texas Tornado plays three games next weekend, October 26, 28, and 29. Visit www.tornadohockey.com to purchase tickets and for more information.

Our FC Dallas has a big playoff game on Saturday, October 28 here in Frisco at Pizza Hut Park. Visit www.fcdallas.net for more information and to purchase tickets as they pursue a berth in the MLS Cup, which is also being held here in Frisco.

Some of you have asked when Halloween trick-or-treating will take place in Frisco and it will be on Halloween itself, October 31, not the weekend before.

For those of you who travel Preston Road frequently, you’ll be happy to know that TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) anticipates having the Preston Road overpass (over SH121) open to traffic on October 24.

If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than thirty-five thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send them to me at matt@mattlafata.com so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.

Spotlight on… Attorney Marc May:

Hello Frisco, I am a partner in the law firm of Gay, McCall, Isaacks, Gordon, May & Roberts, P.C. We are a full service firm that provides quality legal services in any type of civil matter. My practice is fairly evenly divided between family law and personal injury and commercial litigation matters.  I have been practicing law since 1980 and I have been Board Certified in family law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since l986.

During my career, I have represented hundreds of clients in divorce, property division, child support, visitation and custody, adoption, paternity, and other family law matters.  My past experience includes cases involving the valuation and division of clients’ ownership in many types of business entities. My practice also includes commercial and personal injury litigation.  These cases involve such things as automobile and construction site accidents, collection suits, foreclosure suits, partnership and corporate dissolution matters, and litigation relating to contractual disputes.

So what makes you different from your competition?

Upon acceptance of the case, I provide personal attention to each client from start to finish.   This includes open communication with my clients to achieve the best possible results.  As a husband and a father, I understand the possible emotional impact a family law matter can have on children.  Therefore, when the issues involve children, I work diligently to achieve a resolution that is in the best interest of the children.

I am very dedicated in my efforts to offer quality representation.  Therefore, my approach involves taking an aggressive stand when necessary.  At the same time, I understand the value of resolving legal disputes amicably if possible.  To that end, I often use Alternative Dispute Resolution methods such as mediation, in an attempt to negotiate a fair and equitable resolution for my clients.

My policy is to keep all clients fully informed to help them understand the potential consequences of any choice or legal action.  My clients and I work together to reach decisions designed to achieve the best possible outcome under the circumstances of each case.

How does someone find you?

My office is at 2500 Legacy Drive, Suite 204, Frisco.  This is at the corner of Legacy Drive and Stonebriar Drive.  I can be reached by telephone at 214-387-8501, or by email at mmay@ntexas-attorneys.com.   Information can also be obtained from my website www.friscofamilylaw.com

Everybody loves a special. Any special offer for newsletter readers?

I will give a $25.00 per hour discount off of my hourly fee, up to a maximum of $500.00, to any client who reaches me through your newsletter.

Marc, that is a great deal for our newsletter readers and I can personally vouch for the quality of your services as I had a great experience working with you.

Table of Contents:

Because this newsletter continues to grow in size with so much going on in Frisco and the surrounding areas (this may be the longest one yet!), I have added a table of contents. It’s not a clickable table of contents, yet, it is simply a listing, in order, of everything in this newsletter. For those of you who submit things to me to be added to the newsletter, you may want to consider using descriptive titles for your submission in the future, otherwise I will continue to make them up..

Frisco’s Third Annual Storytelling Festival October 20-21 to Promote Tall Tales; Event Kicks Off at New Venue – City Hall Plaza:

Frisco friends and families are warned to be wary of what they believe when Bil Lepp, a champion liar and nationally recognized storyteller, takes the stage at the city’s 3rd Annual Storytelling Festival Oct. 20 – 21 at City Hall Plaza.

The ageless art form of Storytelling has become a modern sensation. Storytelling blends one-person theatre, personal anecdotes, stand-up comedy and ancient folklore into a poignant and enjoyable cultural experience.

“Frisco’s Storytelling Festival is recognized nationally for its excellence,” said Dr. Ron Heezen, Director of the Frisco Public Library. “The Storytelling Festival connects us as human beings because each culture has a rich, storytelling past.”

The Frisco Library Foundation hosts the Storytelling Festival with all proceeds benefiting the Frisco Public Library. For the first time, the event will be held at City Hall Plaza, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd. Ticket prices range from $5 to $30. The Festival kicks off Friday with a fourth and sixth grade field trip and opens to the public at 8 p.m. for the Favorite Stories Concert.

Saturday events begin at 10 a.m. and include individual concerts by each storyteller, as well as regional performers and local students, live music, puppet shows and folk craft demonstrations. The Festival closes with Bedtime Stories at 6 p.m. for the young and young at heart and the final Laughing Night concert at 8 p.m.

Lepp is one of the six featured performers at the Storytelling Festival. With Lepp, the truth not only bends, but twists, stretches, zigzags and does jumping jacks. A five time winner of the Golden Shovel, the coveted prize at the West Virginia Liar’s Contest, Lepp has made a career out of telling the tallest tales.

Lepp stepped onto the stage for the first time in 1990 and has been telling fibs professionally ever since. Lepp’s regular cast of characters includes Grosspapa, his Mennonite, a Russian-revolutionary grandfather, and Buck-Dog, his superhero-hunting dog. Lepp also draws from his local Appalachian folklore, adding his own “artistic” flair.

Lepp will share the stage with Rex Ellis, Carmen Deedy, Dovie Thomason, Willy Claflin and Andy Offutt Irwin, all nationally known tellers.

Collin County Ballet Theatre – Sugar Plum Fairy Teas:

Collin County Ballet Theatre Guild is excited to announce the dates for this year’s Sugar Plum Fairy Teas.

Sunday, November 26, 2006 and Sunday, December 10, 2006 from 2-4pm.

The Collin County Ballet Theatre Guild is pleased to announce the dates for this year’s much-anticipated Sugar Plum Fairy’s Teas.  The teas have become a tradition for families in Frisco and the surrounding communities to kick-off the holiday season!  This premier mother-daughter (or grandparent-grandchild) event is always a desirable destination and the seats sell out quickly.

Make your reservations early for either date and the elegant Westin Stonebriar in Frisco is again sponsoring the ballet guild fundraiser.

The tea is a great value; all tea guests are treated to a parade of all the Nutcracker ballet characters led by Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.  There will be short performances of dances from the Nutcracker.

In addition to a lovely high tea service complete with sweets, finger sandwiches, scones, strawberries and cream, each guest will get a photograph of themselves taken with the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara and other beloved characters from the ballet.  Mice, soldiers, Clara’s friends and other surprise characters mix and mingle with our wee guests during the tea for informal photo and dancing opportunities!  There is a raffle for a ballerina bear and other nice gifts; and finally a goodie-bag for our small guests to take home!

There is a holiday boutique with special ballet treasures and ornaments for purchase.

Put on your holiday clothes to come enjoy an old-fashioned tea.

For tea reservations please call: 469.951.1399. Price: $25. Master Card/Visa accepted. More information at www.CCBallet.com

Please note that the full Nutcracker Ballet will be performed by the Collin County Ballet Theatre at two sites again this year.  The first performance is at the elegant Eisemann Theatre in Richardson on Sunday, December 3rd at 5:00p with the Plano Symphony Orchestra. There will be two performances in Frisco at the new Wakeland High School’s “state of the art” auditorium, Saturday, December 9th at 2:00p and 7:30p. You won’t want to miss this traditional holiday event! Nutcracker performance tickets may be purchased from the Plano Symphony Box Office at 972-473-7262.

Beginning A New Tradition-The Frisco Community Parade:

Long time Frisco residents remember the annual homecoming parade as one of the big events of a small but fast growing town, where thousands of Frisco residents and families lined Main Street to honor the schools, football teams, bands and community organizations that participated.  It has been a tradition that grew each year and is one that helped us to keep the “Small Town Feel”.

Since we have the fastest growing school district in the country for a city our size, and now that we have four high schools, representatives from the City of Frisco, the FISD and Frisco Chamber of Commerce met last year to see how we could keep this tradition going and even expand it.  The result is what we hope will be a new tradition-The Frisco Community Parade.  November 11 will be the date of our first Community Parade and will feature all four high school bands, football teams, Drill Teams and other sports teams, Homecoming Kings and Queens, other school and community groups and numerous businesses.  In addition, the Frisco RoughRiders, Texas Tornado, Dallas Stars and FC Dallas have all agreed to participate with their mascots.  This year the theme will be a “Salute to the Troops” in honor of Veteran’s Day.  It will give us an opportunity as a community to express our appreciation to all those who serve and protect our nation.

The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m., starting at the south end of Frisco Street near Pizza Hut Park and will move east on Main Street to North County Road.  The parade route will be along the eastbound lanes of Main Street.  With the expansion and widening of the street and addition of tree-lined medians, there will be room for thousands of spectators. The tradition of the Mayor and City Council riding in our Fire Engines will continue and this year our Grand Marshall will be Brig. General Mike Cates, U.S. Army and a Frisco High School graduate.  We will also have military vehicles and a possible fly-over of planes during the parade.  Anyone who is currently serving in the military or is a veteran is urged to wear their uniform and participate in the parade.  You can go on the web site at www.Friscoparade.com to get additional information on the parade and how to participate.

We are urging businesses, organizations or groups to be in the parade.  The cost to participate is $ 200 for business and adult organizations and $ 150 for youth organizations.  Schools, non-profit organizations, Military and city entrees will not be charged to enter.  We are also looking for volunteers to help and to be stationed along the parade route to make certain the crowds are kept back from the parade vehicles and to help promote the parade.

We hope to continue to build the parade to become one of the biggest and best in North Texas.  At some point, we hope to add college bands, floats and other exciting activities as part of the event.  We hope that you and your family will come out on November 11 to enjoy the parade.  If you are a business or organization, we want you to participate and encourage you to consider building a float!  Some of my fondest memories from high school and college were the “float making parties” that helped bond the students, parents and organizations together.  Be creative and make this new parade the start of a NEW TRADITION for Frisco-The Frisco Community Parade.

Mike Simpson, Mayor

Frisco Jazz Band Fall Concert:

Sunday, October 29 at 3:30pm at Central Park in Frisco

The Frisco Jazz Band has planned a fall concert!  They will be performing many upbeat music selections at 3:30 pm on Sunday, October 29th at Central Park, located at 3155 Parkwood Drive, in Frisco, Texas.  Central Park is adjacent to Hampton Inn & Suites between Gaylord Parkway and Warren Parkway on Parkwood Drive.

The Frisco Community Jazz Band, directed by Mr. Gary Pearce, has been performing since May of 2004.  The band is made up of local Frisco residents and play charts ranging from Big Band to Dixieland Jazz to more modern themes.  The jazz band features amazingly talented soloists on trumpet, trombone, saxophone, guitar and drums, and many musicians in the band take advantage of the opportunity to play how they feel at the moment by improvising.

Karen Strauss, Vice President of Public Relations for the Frisco Community Band, says the Jazz band is looking forward to performing in the fall.  “The Jazz band is a more concentrated group of musicians that work closely together and produce a tight, hip sound- they’re just a pleasure to listen to. The music choices are so upbeat, and the audience always participates!”

The Frisco Community Jazz Band was formed in Summer 2004 as a part of the Frisco Community Band, which is a non-profit, all volunteer organization benefiting the City of Frisco and its neighboring communities. The Frisco Community Band provides local musicians with the opportunity to expand or continue their experience in the performing arts with the ultimate purpose of making live, symphonic and ensemble music accessible to all segments of the community.

The Frisco Community Band is funded by grants from the Frisco Association of the Arts and Target, also by donations and member dues. All area musicians with at least high school experience are welcome and there are no auditions for the Concert Band. Performances are free to the public.
