Issue of the Week:

Each week I will post a different issue for discussion. Your opinions mean a lot to me and I’d love to get your feedback on the subject. Please send me an email with your thoughts. While your feedback is for my own use at this time, I do publish a sampling of the comments along with some commentary on my web site at www.makemattmayor.com in the “Issues” section.

Frisco’s first recreation and aquatic center, called the Frisco Athletic Center, will open on October 27. This wonderful facility is located at Wade and Preston and should have something for everything. My question to you is “Have you joined or are you planning to join the Frisco Athletic Center and why or why not?”

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

The October Citizen of the Month is…Mr. Coy Miller! Coy was nominated by Frisco resident Ronda Figueroa and here is what she had to say about Coy: “I would like to nominate Mr. Coy Miller, owner of Pardner’s garden and feed store at Alpha Ave. and Main.  Wow, want a dedicated man and super friendly soul he is!!  I have been doing business at his shop since 1994.  He has been so willing to help me get my yard in shape and has never once shown the least bit of frustration or unhappiness.  He greets everyone with a smile and knows many of his customers by name.  I’ve wanted to nominate him for awhile but never took the time.  He really is such an honest, caring, and respectful gentleman.  I love to visit his shop to see all the new crafts and beautiful plantings.  Most importantly, I love to be greeted with such warmness. Please consider him as he most deserves to be honored for his 30 years of service to our community.”

Congratulations to Mr. Coy Miller! If you have somebody that you would like to nominate as a Citizen of the Month, please send us an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. We are going to be cancelling our home phone service and just going to cell phones. We have received calls from the police in the past with crime watch updates and safety tips. Is there a way to register our cell phones so we can still receive the messages from the city?

A. The phone number database used for the alerts comes from the contact number that you have on file with the water department. If you ensure that you update that information with the water department, you should still receive the alerts.

This Day in History – October 18, 1867: U.S. Takes Possession of Alaska

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1867, the U.S. formally takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412 square miles, about twice the size of Texas, and was championed by William Henry Seward, the enthusiastically expansionist secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson.

Russia wanted to sell its Alaska territory, which was remote, sparsely
populated and difficult to defend, to the U.S. rather than risk losing it in battle with a rival such as Great Britain. Negotiations between Seward (1801-1872) and the Russian minister to the U.S., Eduard de Stoeckl, began in March 1867. However, the American public believed the land to be barren and worthless and dubbed the purchase "Seward's Folly" and "Andrew Johnson's Polar Bear Garden," among other derogatory names. Some animosity toward the project may have been a byproduct of President Johnson's own unpopularity. As the 17th U.S. president, Johnson battled with Radical Republicans in Congress over Reconstruction policies following the Civil War. He was impeached in
1868 and later acquitted by a single vote. Nevertheless, Congress eventually ratified the Alaska deal.

Public opinion of the purchase turned more favorable when gold was
discovered in a tributary of Alaska's Klondike River in 1896, sparking a gold rush. Alaska became the 49th state on January 3, 1959, and is now recognized for its vast natural resources. Today, 25 percent of America's oil and over 50 percent of its seafood come from Alaska. It is also the largest state in area, about one-fifth the size of the
lower 48 states combined, though it remains sparsely populated. The name Alaska is derived from the Aleut word alyeska, which means "great land." Alaska has two official state holidays to commemorate its origins: Seward's Day, observed the last Monday in March, celebrates the March 30, 1867, signing of the land treaty between the
U.S. and Russia, and Alaska Day, observed every October 18, marks the
anniversary of the formal land transfer.

October is Energy Awareness Month:

So far this month we have covered Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness…

October is Energy Awareness Month and the ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Campaign is a national call-to-action to encourage every individual in the United States to help save energy and protect the environment through energy-efficient lighting. HUD is proud to be part of such a great campaign sponsored by the Partnership for Home Energy Efficiency, comprised of the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). This partnership provides Americans, including homebuilders, with the latest home energy savings information.

The goal of the partnership is aimed at reducing household energy costs by 10 percent over the next decade while improving our nation's air. The Partnership for Home Energy Efficiency will provide energy saving solutions for households across the country and support research and implementation of a new generation of energy efficiency technologies.

If every U.S. household replaces just one incandescent light bulb at home with one that earned the Energy Star label, the country will save $600 million in energy bills, save enough energy to light 3 million homes, and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1 million cars.

In our homes lighting accounts for nearly 20 percent of electricity costs, with the average home containing more than 30 light fixtures. Energy Star qualified bulbs and fixtures help reduce household energy costs because they use one-third the energy of traditional lighting, and last up to 10 times longer. Consumers can save up to $30 in utility costs over the lifetime of one bulb. Replacing the most frequently used lights at home will yield the most savings.

Visit the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) web site for more information.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

There is a very important Collin County bond election coming up on November 6, with early voting starting October 22. Frisco stands to gain tremendously with the passage of these bonds so please get out and show your support by voting FOR the Collin County bonds. As Collin County Commissioner Joe Jaynes stated, “We will be receiving over $600 million in projects funded from SH 121.  Our county bond proposition for transportation is $235 million.  By partnering with our cities, that amount will be over $400 million.  With our 121 money plus our partnerships through the bond package we will be looking at over $1 billion that can be used for much needed road expansion—all without a tax rate increase.” Visit www.collincountybonds.org for more information.

Thank you to everybody who responded to the last “Issue of the Week: “Do you visit the City’s web site and if so, what do you use it for?” I really appreciate everybody’s input and if I haven’t emailed you back personally, please know that I will. Every person’s response is important to me. I also publish a sampling of the comments along with some commentary on my web site at www.makemattmayor.com in the “Issues” section. This week’s issue, “Have you joined or are you planning to join the Frisco Athletic Center and why or why not?” is now posted in the left hand column. I consider myself to be a pro-active individual for the community. I want to educate people that there are benefits in the community that will not “burn a hole” in their wallet or of their employees.  Individuals and Small business owners can feel confident that their families and co-workers will be taken care of.  Small business owners should also know that these benefits will not be canceled if their employees resign or are terminated. These benefits will stay with the individual for as long as they want.
