We went to the State Fair this past weekend and after sitting in horrendous traffic to get there, which made Frisco traffic look like a day in the park – no pun intended J - I started to think about what it would take to get the State Fair to move to Frisco.

Well, not sure where to start in my quest, Erika and I headed over to Big Tex. Figuring he was the authority on the State Fair, I posed the question about moving the fair to Frisco. To my surprise, he was actually quite interested in the idea, I think. He just kept babbling on about how long he had been standing there and hadn’t been able to sleep in days. Quite frankly, he really sounded bored with being in the same place for so long.

So I left it at that for the time being. I planted the seed and got out of the way since there was a large crowd gathered to take pictures with him. We started to walk away and took a quick picture, which you see above, so that I could send it to Big Tex with a thank you note and reminder to consider Frisco next year. Enjoy the newsletter!

Issue of the Week:

Each week I will post a different issue for discussion. Your opinions mean a lot to me and I’d love to get your feedback on the subject. Please send me an email with your thoughts. While your feedback is for my own use at this time, I do publish a sampling of the comments along with some commentary on my web site at www.makemattmayor.com in the “Issues” section.

The City’s web site got a major facelift not too long ago and is really the center of the city’s communication with its citizens. However, as with any web site, if you can’t quickly and easily find what you are looking for, then it needs attention. So, Do you visit the City’s web site and if so, what do you use it for?” Also, do you feel it is missing anything that would make your experience using the web site more useful?

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

The October Citizen of the Month is…Mr. Coy Miller! Coy was nominated by Frisco resident Ronda Figueroa and here is what she had to say about Coy: “I would like to nominate Mr. Coy Miller, owner of Pardner’s garden and feed store at Alpha Ave. and Main.  Wow, want a dedicated man and super friendly soul he is!!  I have been doing business at his shop since 1994.  He has been so willing to help me get my yard in shape and has never once shown the least bit of frustration or unhappiness.  He greets everyone with a smile and knows many of his customers by name.  I’ve wanted to nominate him for awhile but never took the time.  He really is such an honest, caring, and respectful gentleman.  I love to visit his shop to see all the new crafts and beautiful plantings.  Most importantly, I love to be greeted with such warmness. Please consider him as he most deserves to be honored for his 30 years of service to our community.”

Congratulations to Mr. Coy Miller! If you have somebody that you would like to nominate as a Citizen of the Month, please send us an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. For the last couple of months I have been hearing rumors the Frisco was experiencing a population explosion of Rats. I didn't pay any attention to these rumors untill last Sunday when I pulled into a parking lot at Preston and Gaylord. There lay a huge dead Rat, not a mouse but a Rat, in the parking lot. I was also given a link to WFAA to read a story about how Rats are increasing in numbers in many N. Dallas towns. My question is what department in Frisco or whom in what department in Frisco is responsible for monitoring and controlling this type of issue?

A. Property owners control pests by keeping their properties clean. Many pests are attracted to pet food left outside, grills and other outside cooking areas, decaying vegetation, trash, and similar debris. Many owners schedule routine pest control at their property. For helpful tips, owners may contact Health & Food Safety at (972) 292-5304 or Animal Control at (972) 292.5303.

This Day in History – October 11, 2002: Jimmy Carter wins Nobel Prize

From the History Channel…

On this day in 2002, former President Jimmy Carter wins the Nobel Peace Prize "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

Carter, a peanut farmer from Georgia, served one term as U.S. president between 1977 and 1981. One of his key achievements as president was mediating the peace talks between Israel and Egypt in 1978. The Nobel Committee had wanted to give Carter (1924- ) the prize that year for his efforts, along with Anwar Sadat and Menachim Begin, but was prevented from doing so by a technicality--he had not been nominated by the official deadline.

After he left office, Carter and his wife Rosalynn created the Atlanta-based Carter Center in 1982 to advance human rights and alleviate human suffering. Since 1984, they have worked with Habitat for Humanity to build homes and raise awareness of homelessness. Among his many accomplishments, Carter has helped to fight disease and improve economic growth in developing nations and has served as an observer at numerous political elections around the world.

The first Nobel Prizes--awards established by Swedish industrialist
Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) in his will--were handed out in Sweden in 1901 in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The Nobel Prize in economics was first awarded in 1969. Carter was the third U.S. president to receive the award, worth $1 million, following Theodore Roosevelt (1906) and Woodrow Wilson (1919).

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month:

Last week we covered Breast Cancer Awareness…

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October, 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became a special week when a range of activities were conducted at the local, state, and national levels.

These activities were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.

In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That same year the first national toll-free hotline was begun. In 1989 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress. Such legislation has passed every year since with NCADV providing key leadership in this effort.

In October 1994 NCADV, in conjunction with Ms. Magazine, created the "Remember My Name" project, a national registry to increase public awareness of domestic violence deaths. Since then, NCADV has been collecting information on women who have been killed by an intimate partner and produces a poster each October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, listing the names of those documented in that year.

The Day of Unity is celebrated the first Monday in October. NCADV hopes that events in communities and regions across the fifty states will culminate in a powerful statement celebrating the strength of battered women and their children.

Visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence web site for more information.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
