In early September, I had a business trip to San Francisco so we decided to take an extra day and go to Napa Valley. We were very fortunate to be able to take a tour and do a wine tasting of both of Kathryn and Craig Hall’s Vineyards.

If you are familiar with Hall Office Park here in Frisco, and all the great artwork that Mr. Hall has throughout his development, you’ll be interested to know that his passion for art is seen throughout his vineyards as well.

It was a wonderful experience and one of their vineyards (HALL Rutherford) is set up high, overlooking so much of Napa Valley. It was an absolutely beautiful view from the winery itself.

The picture above was taken from the second Hall vineyard that we visited (HALL St. Helena), where we tasted wine directly from the barrels. The Hall’s are collaborating with acclaimed architect Frank Gehry and local architect Jon Lail to create a spectacular visitors’ center and state-of-the-art winery while meticulously restoring the historic buildings on the grounds.  This unprecedented project will be completed in 2010 and will house numerous pieces from their extensive modern art collection.

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

The October Citizen of the Month is…Mr. Coy Miller! Coy was nominated by Frisco resident Ronda Figueroa and here is what she had to say about Coy: “I would like to nominate Mr. Coy Miller, owner of Pardner’s garden and feed store at Alpha Ave. and Main.  Wow, want a dedicated man and super friendly soul he is!!  I have been doing business at his shop since 1994.  He has been so willing to help me get my yard in shape and has never once shown the least bit of frustration or unhappiness.  He greets everyone with a smile and knows many of his customers by name.  I’ve wanted to nominate him for awhile but never took the time.  He really is such an honest, caring, and respectful gentleman.  I love to visit his shop to see all the new crafts and beautiful plantings.  Most importantly, I love to be greeted with such warmness. Please consider him as he most deserves to be honored for his 30 years of service to our community.”

Congratulations to Mr. Coy Miller! If you have somebody that you would like to nominate as a Citizen of the Month, please send us an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. Are right turn lanes required to be constructed when a business develops an adjacent lot? I thought they were, but the CVS at Legacy and Main was built without any.

A. Right turn lanes are required to be constructed when corner parcels are developed. CVS was not required to construct a right turn at Legacy/Main because there is an existing southbound to westbound left turn lane on the ground that was constructed when Legacy Drive was extended north to Eldorado Parkway. Additional turn lanes will be constructed as the commercial development continues to grow and additional driveways will be built.

This Day in History – October 4, 1957 – Sputnik Launched:

From the History Channel…

The Soviet Union inaugurates the "Space Age" with its launch of Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite. The spacecraft, named Sputnik after the Russian word for "satellite," was launched at 10:29 p.m. Moscow time from the Tyuratam launch base in the Kazakh Republic. Sputnik had a diameter of 22 inches and weighed 184 pounds and circled Earth once every hour and 36 minutes. Traveling at 18,000 miles an hour, its elliptical orbit had an apogee (farthest point from Earth) of 584 miles and a perigee (nearest point) of 143 miles. Visible with binoculars before sunrise or after sunset, Sputnik transmitted radio
signals back to Earth strong enough to be picked up by amateur radio
operators. Those in the United States with access to such equipment tuned in and listened in awe as the beeping Soviet spacecraft passed over America several times a day. In January 1958, Sputnik's orbit deteriorated, as expected, and the spacecraft burned up in the atmosphere.

Officially, Sputnik was launched to correspond with the International
Geophysical Year, a solar period that the International Council of Scientific Unions declared would be ideal for the launching of artificial satellites to study Earth and the solar system. However,
many Americans feared more sinister uses of the Soviets' new rocket and satellite technology, which was apparently strides ahead of the U.S. space effort. Sputnik was some 10 times the size of the first planned U.S. satellite, which was not scheduled to be launched until the next year. The U.S. government, military, and scientific community were caught off guard by the Soviet technological achievement, and their united efforts to catch up with the Soviets heralded the beginning of the "space race."

The first U.S. satellite, Explorer, was launched on January 31, 1958. By then, the Soviets had already achieved another ideological victory when they launched a dog into orbit aboard Sputnik 2. The Soviet space program went on to achieve a series of other space firsts in the late 1950s and early 1960s: first man in space, first woman, first three men, first space walk, first spacecraft to impact the moon, first to
orbit the moon, first to impact Venus, and first craft to soft-land on the moon. However, the United States took a giant leap ahead in the space race in the late '60s with the Apollo lunar-landing program, which successfully landed two Apollo 11 astronauts on the surface of the moon in July 1969.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. Visit the American Cancer Society web site for more information.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
