Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. I live on The Trails golf course in the Fairways and have a golf cart. I wanted to find out if it would be okay to drive it within our subdivision.

A. There is no city ordinance that addresses the operation of golf carts on streets. The Texas transportation Code reads:

TC Sec 502.0071 Golf Carts
An owner of a golf cart is not required to register the golf cart if:
(1) the operation of the golf cart occurs in the daytime, as defined by Section 541.401 [period beginning one half hour before sunrise and ending one half hour after sunset]; and
(2) the operation:
(A) does not exceed a distance of two miles from the point of origin to the destination if driven to and from a golf course;
(B) occurs entirely within a master planned community with a uniform set of restrictive covenants that has had a plat approved by a county or a municipality; or
(C) occurs on a public or private beach

If all of the requirements are met, then the cart can be operated in the community.

This Day in History – September 20,  1973 King Triumphs in Battle of the Sexes:

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1973, in a highly publicized "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, top women's player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1 ranked men's player. Riggs (1918-1995), a self-proclaimed male chauvinist, had boasted that women were inferior, that they couldn't handle the pressure of the game and that even at his age he could beat any female player. The match was a huge media event, witnessed in person by over 30,000 spectators at the Houston
Astrodome and by another 50 million TV viewers worldwide. King made a
Cleopatra-style entrance on a gold litter carried by men dressed as ancient slaves, while Riggs arrived in a rickshaw pulled by female models. Legendary sportscaster Howard Cosell called the match, in which King beat Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. King's achievement not only helped legitimize women's professional tennis and female athletes, but it was seen as a victory for women's rights in general.

King was born Billie Jean Moffitt on November 22, 1943, in Long Beach,
California. Growing up, she was a star softball player before her parents encouraged her to try tennis, which was considered more ladylike. She excelled at the sport and in 1961, at age 17, during her first outing to Wimbledon, she won the women's doubles title. King would rack up a total of 20 Wimbledon victories, in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, over the course of her trailblazing career. In
1971, she became the first female athlete to earn more than $100,000
in prize money in a single season. However, significant pay disparities still existed between men and women athletes and King lobbied hard for change. In 1973, the U.S. Open became the first major tennis tournament to hand out the same amount of prize money to winners of both sexes.

In 1972, King became the first woman to be chosen Sports Illustrated's
"Sportsperson of the Year" and in 1973, she became the first president
of the Women's Tennis Association. King also established a sports
foundation and magazine for women and a team tennis league. In 1974,
as a coach of the Philadelphia Freedoms, one of the teams in the
league, she became the first woman to head up a professional co-ed team.

The "mother of modern sports" retired from tennis with 39 Grand Slam career titles. She remained active as a coach, commentator and advocate for women's sports and other causes. In 2006, the USTA National Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open, was renamed in King's honor. During the dedication ceremony, tennis great John McEnroe
called King "the single most important person in the history of women's sports."

September is National Pain Awareness Month:

So far this month we have covered Ovarian Cancer Awareness and Cholesterol Awareness…

In recognition that September is Pain Awareness Month, PainAwareness.org will again in 2007 host one of the largest pain education and activity offerings during Pain Awareness month.  The American Society of Pain Educators along with other organizations will again contribute content from their own Pain Awareness Month initiatives to add to the content developed by PainAwareness.org. The aim is to offer a broad educational agenda to reverse the present challenge of under-diagnosis and under-treatment of pain in the

US.

At the conclusion of Pain Awareness month PainAwareness.org will undergo a transition and become a dynamic centralized hub and web resource for practitioners seeking education, information, and tools to assist them in their management of patients experiencing pain. The launch of the new look and expansive library of content related to pain and pain management will signal this transition expected to occur in late October early November. Don’t forget to continue to visit PainAwareness.org after Pain Awareness month to access the new offerings.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to
