Dear Friends,

This week’s newsletter is proudly sponsored by Queen Bee Productions, producer of the Mrs. Texas United States competition for married women. Find out how you can become the next Mrs. Frisco! Also check out the spotlight on Life Fellowship, a new Church that begins this Sunday. David Cozart is Pastor and a friend so stop by and say Hi to him. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

If you would like to advertise in this newsletter and reach more than 35,000 captive residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding communities, many different opportunities are available to you. It’s the most efficient and cost effective form of advertising in this area so please email sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more information.

Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.

As we approach the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, please take a moment to remember what happened that day and pray for and thank our troops who are fighting terrorism and for our safety across the globe on a daily basis.

Do you like to write? I am looking for a new monthly column for the newsletter, similar to the “Advice From Dr. Checo” column. It has to be an informative topic for our readers and this is a great opportunity for you to showcase and grow your business. Just ask Dr. Checo what kind of positive impact it has had on his business. In any event, I have two spots available for a monthly column and you would need to make a minimum six month commitment. If interested, please email sales@mattlafatamarketing.com with your idea and we will get back to you with details.

It was so great to see some rain earlier this week! Word is that with the continuing compliance of the majority of our citizens, there are no plans to go to Stage 4 at this time. Please help report violators to 972-335-5520 as we will most likely be at Stage 3 for quite some time to come. 4,000 sprinkler systems have been disconnected for non-compliance. Doesn’t it anger you when people can’t follow the rules and put our remaining water supplies in jeopardy as a result? Continued compliance by everybody is vital.

The Mother-Son Dance is coming up September 16 at Centennial High School. Tickets are still available online at http://specialevents.sportstech.net. Tickets are also available at the Alumni Hall Fitness Center during their regular business hours. Tickets will not be sold at the event.  For more information contact the Parks and Recreation Special Events office at 972-335-5517.

If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than thirty-five thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send them to me at matt@mattlafata.com so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.

Newsletter Sponsor – Queen Bee Productions, producer of the Mrs. Texas United States Competition for Married Women:

As wives and moms, sometimes we get so busy with the day-to-day activities of life that we forget to do something for ourselves. Sound familiar? If so, you could be on your way to a new journey of self-exploration, all the while making new friends! If you are a resident of Frisco and married, you’re eligible to compete for the title of Mrs. Frisco 2007. Represent this amazing city and have a year you and your husband will always remember! The new Mrs. Frisco will get her state entry fee paid to compete at the Mrs. Texas United States competition next May! The winner of Mrs. Texas gets an all-expense paid trip to represent the state at Mrs. United States next summer in Las Vegas.

Contestants should wear a dressy suit (or something worn to a job interview) and will be judged solely at the Frisco local level on a panel-style interview and one-page biography form. Contestant interviews will be held Sunday, October 29, in Frisco and the winner will be announced immediately following the judges’ tabulation.

There will be complimentary preparation sessions to get all Mrs. Texas contestants (including the new Mrs. Frisco) ready for the state competition, so no experience is necessary. Most women who compete have never done a pageant previously.

Entry fee to apply for the Mrs. Frisco title is $75. For an entry form and more information, please email info@mrstexasunitedstates.com. More on the state event next May can be found at www.mrstexasunitedstates.com  Deadline to enter is October 15th.

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 35,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.

Spotlight on Life Fellowship:

This interview was held with Pastor David Cozart, a great guy who is very involved with our community…

Tell us about your church, David

Life Fellowship is a new and innovative church with today's overwhelmed 21st Century family in mind.  Let's face it.  Life is demanding and we all need a place "where everyone knows your name."  We don't claim to have all the answers, but want to be a place for people to come and know that they are surrounded by caring people and a loving God in the midst of life's joys and tragedies.

Life Fellowship is a place where you will find encouragement, meet new friends, be challenged in your spiritual walk, and experience hope. It is also a place where those wanting to be involved can serve others by offering their time and talents in a variety of ways.

Sunday mornings are filled with great music, multimedia, clear biblical teachings applicable to life, and KidsLife.   Life Groups meet during the week and middle/high school students meet each Wednesday night.

Dress extremely casually and be ready to relax with a cup of coffee, new friends and neighbors, and let the Bible come alive to you and your family.

If your life seems full but you know something is still missing, please spend an hour with us this Sunday at 11:00.  We meet at the Kids R Kids Learning Center in West Frisco at Teel and Main.

For more information, please visit our website at www.lifefellowshipfrisco.com or contact Pastor David Cozart at 214-886-7810 or david@lifefellowshipfrisco.com.

What distinguishes you from other churches?

I see churches like restaurants- different food styles, different tastes for different people.  There are so many wonderful churches in this area.  We are not trying to compete with them or "steal" church members.  We are simply another option in the West Frisco / Little Elm area for those interested in a smaller church closer to home.  Like our sister churches, Life Fellowship will work to creatively present the life changing message of Jesus in a compelling way.

One cool thing we have is KidLife.  Our kids ministry focuses on helping families provide a solid foundation of biblical values for children that will last a lifetime.  Today's children are tomorrow's leaders.  Since we believe children model what they see, we invite the kids to be a part of the service.  Our Sunday services are geared for people of all ages - not just adults.  Kids will enjoy being a part of an exciting service with multimedia, puppets, and singing prior to going with our caring Children's Team for engaging activities and application of the day's Main Idea while adults and older students will hear practical biblical teaching for living life.

How does someone find you?

We are conveniently located near the intersection of Teel and Main.  We meet in the Kids R Kids Learning Center (2660 W. Main).  It is an incredible building with lots of room for people to come and experience what God is doing in the real lives of real people.  We will have signs to direct where to go and people to welcome you.  I hope to see you Sunday morning at 11.

David, everybody loves a special. I know you are a special guy but any special offer for newsletter readers?

Don't know if I have a special offer other than sharing that Life Fellowship is a place where real people can learn and encounter a real God that wants to help them journey through the realities and relationships of life.

Since I love to eat, tell us what is your favorite restaurant in this area?

Do I have to pick just one?!?  We have really enjoyed Scotty P's burgers, Hacienda's Fajitas, and Cruisers child friendly atmosphere (as well as the food,)

Yes it is very tough to pick just one favorite restaurant around here with the plethora of choices. Ok, anything else you want to tell us?

Be sure to visit our website or give me a call if you have any questions.  I look forward to meeting many of you in the days and weeks to come.

Table of Contents:

Because this newsletter continues to grow in size, and I think this is the longest one to date (there is just so much going on around here!), I have decided to add a table of contents. Now, before you get too excited, it’s not a clickable table of contents at this time. Simply a listing, in order, of everything in this newsletter. For those of you who submit things to me to be added to the newsletter, you may want to consider using descriptive titles for your submission in the future, otherwise I will continue to make them up..

More to Love at Your New Library - What’s Where in the New Library Opening September 21:

The Third Floor

Library Administration, Friends of the Library and Frisco Library Foundation, plus Technical Services occupy the third floor.  Their services are a vital and integral part of the library.

The Fourth Floor

Frisco book lovers have two great reasons to visit the fourth floor.  First, readers will discover thousands of new novels, biographies, and new non-fiction books that more than doubled the library’s existing collection.  Second, the fourth floor provides readers with one of the most attractive library reading rooms in the state of Texas.  The two-story vaulted ceiling features exposed wood beams and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Frisco in three directions.  Traditional heavy wood library tables and chairs round out the setting.  Library Director Ron Heezen says “…I’ve been in the library world for over 30 years, and I can say our fourth floor is as fine a space for adult readers as I have ever seen.  Frisco residents will be proud of this space and the views of the city it affords.”

Please plan to join us on Thursday, September 21st.  We’re looking forward to seeing you.

Locally, Lions club activities include collection of eyeglasses for recycling.  The Frisco Noon Lions Club plans to become involved in our community by offering aid to those in need of assistance with eyeglasses, diabetes awareness around town and in schools, global awareness projects in our schools, and scholarships. Our motto is “WE SERVE”.

Heart Day on the Lake 2006:

Heart Day on the Lake 2006 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 from 4pm - 8pm.  Again this year, the event will be held on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Lewisville at Cottonwood Creek Marina.  We'll enjoy a live performance by Texas' own Jon Christopher Davis as well as a silent auction and a raffle.   Activities include the huge 33 foot tall Titanic Slide, a pirate ship jumphouse, rock climbing, face painting and more!   Enjoy barbecue by Randy White's BBQ.  All activities and the meal are included in the ticket price.  Adult tickets are just $12 in advance and $17 at the door.  Children's tickets (age 2-12) are $5 in advance and $10 at the door.  Ticket may be purchased online, at Cottonwood Creek Marina, at the Cardiopulmonary Research Science and Technology Institute (CRSTI) or by calling 972-566-6820.

Silent auction items this year include a guitar signed by George Strait, a jersey autographed by Lance Armstrong, an autographed Troy Aikman "Hall of Fame" football, a Dirk Nowitzki autographed basketball, accomodations at luxury hotels, roundtrip airfare, spa services, home decor, tickets to sporting events, and various other services and items.  New items are coming in every day!  (It's not too late to contribute -- please contact us if you would like to donate an item/service to the silent auction.)  With such a large variety of items available, this is the perfect opportunity to start your holiday shopping while supporting a good cause!

All proceeds raised from this event go directly towards congenital heart defect research for children through the Chloe Duyck Memorial Fund, a part of the Cardiopulmonary Research Science and Technology Institute, a 501(c)3 organization.  CHDs are currently the leading cause of death within the first year of life and are the most common birth defect.  40,000 children will be born this year with a heart defect - many of those will be right here in the DFW metroplex.  The money raised last year has already supported research that could make an impact on any child who must undergo open heart surgery.  As parents who lost their child to a CHD, we were shocked to learn about the lack of funding available for research.  We need your help to make a difference!

For more information please check out the event website at www.hope4tinyhearts.com  or email Michelle@powerhousedesigns.com.  We hope to see you there!!

Frisco Pride Raising Funds for LifeWalk 2006:

Frisco Pride, a non-profit service and social organization for gays and lesbians (and their friends and family) who live or work in and around Frisco, has committed to raising funds for the 2006 AIDS Arms Life Walk.  As this is our first year, we have set a modest goal of $1,000, which we hope to shatter!  Funds are raised by member volunteers who pledge to walk in the Life Walk in Dallas on October 1.  Funds are being raised now through September 30.

LifeWalk is the primary fundraiser held annually for AIDS Arms of Dallas.   The mission of AIDS Arms is to assist individuals in accessing the healthcare, resources and support necessary to successfully manage the challenges of living with HIV/AIDS.  HIV/AIDS remains a devastating pandemic.  More than 20 million people have died of AIDS across the world. This Day in Music History:

Since music is such a passion of mine, I thought I’d start adding some music trivia to the newsletter…

In 2001, Michael Jackson was reunited onstage with the Jackson Five at his 30th Anniversary Celebration in New York City's Madison Square Garden. It ended Jackson's 11-year hiatus from performing in the U.S. Isn’t he in jail now?

In 1991, Motley Crue signed a record deal for which they were guaranteed $22.5 million. At that point in their career, the record company probably lost money on this deal.

In 1976, Abba were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Dancing Queen', the groups fourth UK No.1. I put this in here for no other reason to get you singing this song for the rest of the day.

Also in 1976, the first Buddy Holly week was held by UK fans in London. Buddy Holly was born on September 7, 1936 and died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959.

In 1968, The Doors scored their only US No.1 album on this day with 'Waiting For The Sun'.

Frisco Independent School District (FISD) Namesakes:

I frequently get asked who a certain school is named after and why? I wrote an article on this which can currently be viewed at www.aroundtownkids.com. For the foreseeable future, I will cover the namesake behind each school. I’ll cover all the middle schools first and then the elementary schools, doing one per week until we get through all of them. If you’ve missed on, you can get past newsletters on my web site at www.mattlafatamarketing.com

Cal and Walt Wester Middle School – 12293 Shepherds Hill Lane

Cal Wester and his wife Walt were long-time educators who made a significant impact in the FISD during their years of service to children. They both graduated from East Texas State University, where Cal was head of the student body. While in Frisco ISD from 1946-1968, he was a teacher, sponsor, junior high school principal and was also part of a land development group that brought affordable housing to Frisco. He saw a need to have homes that teachers could afford and that would allow Frisco graduates to come back home to live, work and raise families. He put his whole heart into teaching, but Mr. Wester's love of young people extended beyond school; he gave many hours to work with youth through the Methodist Church. He later left Frisco to become Superintendent of Schools in Ferris, where he retired. Walt taught high school English and 6th and 4th grades while in FISD. She taught junior high in Ennis and Ferris and also taught at the junior college level, retiring in 1984. Cal died in 1998; Walt died in 2003. She has stated that the years in Frisco were the best times in their lives and that they always loved the students and teaching - wanting to be wherever it could best benefit the young people.

Wester Middle school had 763 students in the 2005-2006 school year.
