Dear Friends,
This week’s newsletter is proudly sponsored by The Music Conservatory of Texas in Frisco. Read about their exciting jazz concert this weekend and also read about all the music programs they have to offer right here in Frisco. Also check out the spotlight on The Law Firm of Jordan, Houser & Flournoy which has expanded to Hall Office Park. They have a great deal for newsletter readers only – a complimentary initial consultation plus $150 off new estate plans. If you’ve been putting off your estate planning, there is no reason to put it off any longer with an offer like that! A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.
If you would like to advertise in this newsletter and reach more than 33,000 captive residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding communities, many different opportunities are available to you. It’s the most efficient and cost effective form of advertising in this area so please email sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more information.
Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.
Please continue to conserve water wherever you can. We are in a serious drought condition and under Stage 3 restrictions. The majority of citizens are doing a great job complying and conserving water and this is crucial to help us avoid Stage 4. Too many people are unfortunately ignoring these restrictions and the City has shut off over 3,200 systems for not complying. Visit http://www.friscotexas.gov/departments/public_works/Waterwise/index.aspx?id=443 for more information. Also, if you see somebody violating the restrictions, please either speak to them and remind them about the restrictions or simply call 972-335-5520.
If you are looking for great Chinese food, try Lotus. They are located at the SW corner of Preston and Wade Blvd. The food is great and it's also great when the owner personally delivers the order - very nice to see that level of customer service. Give them a try, I think you’ll like it.
Last week’s issue had an update on SH 121 construction projects. I’ll have more road construction updates in a couple of weeks.
Lots of great information in this newsletter as always including information on the Arts Gala Annual Event, Great Steak of Texas, new library update, storytelling festival, scouting night, 9/11 memorial service, bazaars, garage sales, upcoming FC Dallas games, Texas Tornado pre-season scrimmage, Frisco Lions Club, community events, charity events, and so much more. Sit back, relax and enjoy.
If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than thirty-three thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send them to me at matt@mattlafata.com so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.

So Cynthia, tell us a little more about yourself
I’ve lived here in Frisco for almost 9 years, and I grew up in Richardson, so this area is near and dear to my heart! I’ve been married to Kevin for almost 10 years, and we have one son who has just started kindergarten (and loves it!).
I’m glad to see your office in Frisco. Why was it such a priority for you to open your office in Frisco?
I love working in the area that I live and being able to represent my neighbors and businesses in Frisco. It is so important for families to complete their estate planning and so important for businesses to be able to have aggressive representation, I think it’s important for our community to have great legal representation without having to drive downtown or paying downtown law firm prices!
What is one thing you think our readers need to know about JHF?
All of the attorneys at JHF are highly qualified and experienced, and we limit our practice to providing representation for families, businesses, estates and trusts. All of the attorneys at JHF understand the importance of providing specifically tailored documents to give you the best plan for your family or business or the best representation of your trust or estate. We take the time to listen to what you need!

Heart Day on the Lake 2006:
Please join us for the 2nd annual Heart Day on The Lake! All proceeds raised from this event go directly towards congenital heart defect research for children. CHDs are currently the leading cause of death within the first year of life and are the most common birth defect. 40,000 children will be born this year with a heart defect - many of those will be right here in the DFW metroplex. The money raised last year has already supported research that could make an impact on any child who must undergo open heart surgery. As parents who lost their child to a CHD, we were shocked to learn about the lack of funding available for research. We need your help to make a difference!
Heart Day on the Lake 2006 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 from 4pm - 8pm. Again this year, the event will be held on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Lewisville at Cottonwood Creek Marina. We'll enjoy a live performance by Texas' own Jon Christopher Davis as well as a silent auction and a raffle. Activities include the huge Titanic Slide, a pirate ship jumphouse, rock climbing, face painting and more! Enjoy barbecue by Randy White's BBQ as well as various drinks. All activities and Randy White's BBQ is included in the ticket price. Adult tickets are just $12 in advance and $17 at the door. Children's tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Ticket sales will be made available online soon as well as a couple of retail locations (locations will be announced shortly.)
Please come out and enjoy the family fun while supporting a great cause. We are also still in need of donations for the silent auction. Also this year we are accepting monetary donations in memory of loved ones or in honor of survivors. (These donations will be listed on the event program as well as the event website.) We will have a display of heart kids (both survivors and those who have passed on), if you would like a family member's picture included please contact us. We would be honored to include your family member as we remember those who have passed on and those who inspire us to keep the hope alive. This Day in Music History:
Since music is such a passion of mine, I thought I’d start adding some music trivia to the newsletter…
In 1967, 17-year old Bruce Springsteen (my personal favorite) joined a group called Earth.
In 1977, Singer, songwriter Waylon Jennings was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine. Jennings had recently been named an honorary police chief.
In 1985, Huey Lewis and the News started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'The Power Of Love'. As featured in the great movie 'Back To The Future'.
In 1987, Donny Osmond released his first single in 10 years 'I'm In It For Love', (Donny now shaves and has taken to wearing black leather).
In 1991, Metallica scored their first UK No.1 album with their self- titled LP.

Frisco Independent School District (FISD) Namesakes:
I frequently get asked who a certain school is named after and why? I wrote an article on this which can currently be viewed at www.aroundtownkids.com. For the foreseeable future, I will cover the namesake behind each school. I’ll cover all the middle schools first and then the elementary schools, doing one per week until we get through all of them.
Bennett and Alma Griffin Middle School – 3703 El Dorado Parkway in Frisco
The Griffins were large landowners and farmers west of Frisco and also owned the grain elevator in Frisco. Bennett Griffin served as a board member for nine years in the 1950s and was president for five of those years. He also donated land for the project center where FISD held its local fairs. Alma graduated from Texas Wesleyan College as a Phi Beta Kappa, a woman of scholastic honors. She was a teacher in the Frisco Schools and a very active mother and member of the community. Their model of community service and spirit had a significant impact on their children. Mike Griffin served on the school board from 1985-1990 and Linda Feld served on the board from 1991-1998. Linda has also served on city council and both she and Mike continue to be supporters of the schools, personally and professionally.
Griffin Middle school had 687 students in the 2005-2006 school year.
Frisco Sunrise Rotary Running With the Bulls:
The Frisco Sunrise Rotary group is proud to announce the 1st Annual Running with the Bulls 5K Run/Walk charity event benefiting Frisco Family Services Center (FFSC). The race will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Great Steak of Texas at the historic Frisco Square for a challenging, but scenic route on Saturday, September 30, starting at 8:00 AM.
Frisco Family Services Center is a local, non-profit organization whose mission is to provide social services to individuals and families in need and assist them in becoming productive members of the Frisco community.
Frisco Family Services Center is the only non-profit social service agency in Frisco. They host the only food pantry in Frisco, offer financial assistance for rent/mortgage and utility payments, provide information and referral services, distribute clothing, furniture and household items, and offer special assistance in providing school supplies, Thanksgiving meals, and holiday gifts for children and senior citizens. FFSC also offers prescription drug assistance as well as educational programs. FFSC served over 1300 client families in 2005, including 322 families affected by the hurricanes. They continue to distribute in excess of 27,000 pounds of food to over 350 families each month.
Jill Cumnock, Executive Director of Frisco Family Services had this to say about the race, “We are honored to have been chosen as the beneficiary of the Sunrise Rotary's 5K run. We truly appreciate the efforts of all the Frisco Sunrise Rotarians as well as the sponsors and all those who will be participating in the run. The funds raised from this event will help us keep up with the increase in demand for our services and allow us to feed the hungry and prevent homelessness for our clients thus making a real difference in the lives of those that we serve.”
Along with the 5k run/walk, there will be a kid’s 50 yard dash and a play area with bounce houses. After the race, participants can partake in the Cowboy Breakfast and receive a discount on the meal for participating in the race. Also, each runner will receive a commemorative race day shirt. This is family friendly event, so bring the kids along for the fun!
