Dear Friends,

This week’s newsletter is proudly sponsored by the Frisco Chamber of Commerce and their spotlight on the 20th Annual John Weinberg Golf Tournament. Come out and play in this tournament, or simply become a sponsor as it benefits the business community and the community as a whole, and is always a fun event. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

If you would like to advertise in this newsletter and reach more than 33,000 captive residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding communities, many different opportunities are available to you. It’s the most efficient and cost effective form of advertising in this area so please email sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more information.

Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.

Although I thought I saw Elvis in Vegas a few weeks ago when I was out there, I am told this week, August 16 to be exact) is the 29th anniversary of his death. Long live the King!

Please remember that school is in session which means school zones all over the city are now active with lower speed limits than normal. Every year around this time I talk about the dangers of people driving too fast, ignoring school zones, going around stopped buses, etc. I continually see people have a complete disregard for the safety of children, many times after dropping off or picking up their own children off at school. Why do people feel their time is any more important, or that they are any more important than the other people waiting in line? Drive slowly, don’t cut in front of others, don’t go around others and when a school bus is stopped to pick up or drop off children, stay far away from it and don’t start driving until they start moving. This is a serious issue, especially with people being distracted with cell phones, other kids in the car, the radio, or whatever. Please just slow down and pay attention to your driving. It only takes a second for a child to dart in front of your car and that one second could change yours, and their life forever.

Lots of great information in this newsletter as always including information on the Gene Autry Festival, Arts Gala Annual Event, Great Steak of Texas, upcoming Frisco Fire and Police Department classes for citizens, library update, community band concert, Frisco Lions Club, neighborhood park planning meetings, upcoming bazaars, mall events, SH 121 construction update, community events, charity events, and so much more. As a result of so much going on, this newsletter is long, so sit back, relax and enjoy.

If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than thirty-three thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send them to me at matt@mattlafata.com so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.

Spotlight on the 20th Annual John Weinberg Golf Tournament sponsored by the Frisco Chamber of Commerce to be held September 11, 2006:

What is so special about the John Weinberg Golf Tournament?

John Weinberg moved to Frisco in l987 as Manager of TXU and Lone Star Gas.  He became involved in numerous community activities, but was especially devoted to the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, having served two terms as Chairman  and was the founder of the annual golf tournament.  After he was diagnosed with cancer, the Chamber members voted to name the Tournament after him. “He passed away in 2000 and the tradition of the golf tournament has carried on as a tribute,” explains Tony Felker, Interim President of the Frisco Chamber.

What makes this year’s tournament different from  past tournaments?

The Chamber of Commerce is the first business in the Frisco community to hold an inaugural event at the prestigious TPC at Craig Ranch open for play since September 16, 2004.  TPC Craig Ranch, has chosen to partner up with the Frisco Chamber of Commerce  to show their joint support of business advocacy, development, and retention efforts throughout the county by participating in and supporting this event.

Why would a golfer want to play this particular course?

The TPC Craig Ranch (home to many USGA qualifiers, including the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open Sectional and most recently the Women’s U.S. Open Sectional) is a $43 million private golf facility covering 233 acres and is the first and only PGA Tour-owned and operated tournament player’s club in the State. “The Tom Weiskopf design plays at 7,438 yards from the PGA tees,” explains Bill Hughes, General Manager at TPC.  It was built with state of the art construction in mind—with features that are striking, but not dramatic on this par – 72 course.

If you don’t play golf, can you still participate?

“This year’s tournament is geared toward both large and small businesses as well as individuals, who are invited, encouraged, and welcomed to be a part of this year’s exiting event whether they play, contribute as a sponsor, or just come and be a part of the gallery in support of the Chamber or their favorite golfer,” said Terri Green, Attorney and this year’s Tournament Chairman. This tournament will provide players with a rare opportunity to “break the course record, as well as network, interact and socialize with Frisco and the surrounding regions most influential business professionals and city leaders,” Green added.

Can you give me more information on the costs and tee time?

We already have enough players for one flight and are signing up new players daily for the second flight with the flights beginning at 8:00 am. and 1:30. Due to the location of this event and the overwhelming response so far, we anticipate this tournament will sell out at 288 players soon! Sponsorship levels range from $50 to $15,000. A foursome can play on this unique and challenging course for $1,000, with an individual teeing it up for only $250. This entry fee includes two meals, drinks, green fees and a cart, a fantastic player’s gift bag, closest to the pin entry, longest drive entry, putting contest entry, as well as a chance to hit a “hole” in one and drive home a vehicle from John Eagle Lincoln Mercury or Stonebriar Chevrolet.

Who are some of your sponsors?

Titanium Level:           Dallas Baptist University-North

Graphite Level:           Baylor Medical Center at Frisco, Centennial Medical Center, Logix Communications, Prosper Bank, QwikWash America!, Wise Orthodontics

Steel Level:                 American Bank of Texas, Capital One, Cirro Energy, CoServ, Frisco Wholesale Lumber, IBB Designs, Legacy Texas Bank, Liberty Glass & Mirror, Medical Center of Plano, Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, Stonebriar Centre, The Haskell Company, TXU Electric Delivery

What other activities will be there?

Jack FM radio will be there with their giant Jackpot machine, handing out prizes and playing music. Currently there are ten tents who will be giving away “adult” drinks and assorted gifts.  Also, we will have a Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive and Best Putt contest as well as Nyle Pruitt, a long drive winner, will be there to test your ability to hit the ball further than him!  And lastly, a raffle and auction.  So, fun for everyone!

WOW, sounds like something I can’t miss… how can I sign up?

Golfers and Sponsors can sign up by contacting either Terri Green, Tournament Chairman, at (214) 727-8587 or Christi Wilson, Frisco Chamber’s Director of Events, at (972) 335-9522 or cwilson@friscochamber.com. We invite you to “tee it up for a great cause” and be “part of the tradition.”

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 33,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. Frisco Fire Department Now Accepting Applications for Upcoming Classes!:

Citizen’s Fire Academy – Class #18

The Frisco Fire Department will be hosting the Frisco Citizen’s Fire Academy (CFA) class starting Thursday, September 7th at Fire Station #4.   Designed to provide the community with information about the organization and operations of the Frisco Fire Department, the academy is open to persons over the age of 18 who either work or live within the City of Frisco.  In addition to classroom education taught by Frisco Fire personnel, CFA participants will also have the opportunity to spend time at Fire Stations and ride along with emergency personnel.   Other hands-on activities include going inside a burning building while dressed in bunker gear as well as using powerful rescue tools during an extrication demonstration.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) – Class #9

The Frisco Fire Department is currently taking applications for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class starting Tuesday, September 11th at Fire Station #4.  CERT classes instruct citizens about disaster preparedness and how to respond to a disaster or large-scale emergency situation within their communities.   The program is open to persons over the age of 18 who either work or live within the City of Frisco.  During classes, citizens study an all-risk, all hazards training program including CPR and Basic First Aid training.  Once trained, CERT volunteers will be able to provide immediate assistance to victims, organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site, and provide critical support including collecting disaster intelligence to professional first responders.

Applications for both classes are available for download at www.friscofire.com or can be picked up at any Frisco Fire Station.  Each nine-week program meets one night per week from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. If interested or for more information, contact the Frisco Fire Department at (972) 335-5525 during normal business hours.

Citizen’s Police Academy:

The Frisco Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is an interesting and informative program that educates citizens who live or work in Frisco about our police department and its divisions and practices. Instructors are officers and employees of the Frisco Police Department.

The Frisco CPA meets every Thursday for 11 weeks and includes an optional 12th week training session for the Citizens on Patrol (COPs) program – www.friscocops.org. The CPA is offered twice yearly (one session in the fall and the other in the spring). The program has recently been restructured to involve more hands-on activities, such as actual crime scene processing, hand to hand defensive tactics, pistol shooting, high-risk traffic stops and much more. Although each member is encouraged to take part in the scenarios, participation is optional and any member may choose to be a spectator in any portion of the CPA. The purpose of the CPA is to give our citizens an idea of just a few of the many day-to-day functions in the Frisco Police Department. In order to graduate from the program, participants must not miss more than two classes (not counting the optional firearms class or COPs training).

The next CPA is scheduled to begin Sept. 14, 2006. Classes are held in the training room at the Frisco Police Department, 8750 McKinney Rd.

Once you have completed the CPA curriculum, we hope you will want to become part of the Frisco Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and/or Frisco Citizens on Patrol. Both are active police/community support and educational organizations (visit www.fcpaaa.org for more information).

In order to participate you must fill out an application for the CPA, along with the waiver of liability. If you have any questions, or would like an application, please call (972) 335-5603 ext. 107 or e-mail, gcovington@friscotexas.gov. You may fax your application and waiver to (972) 731-4900.  After your application has been reviewed and processed, your name will be placed on a list (applications are processed on a first come basis).    Applicants will receive letters in August about the status of their application and additional class information.

Since the class size is limited to 20 participants, we encourage early enrollment. Once again, thank you for your interest.

Heart Day on the Lake 2006:

Please join us for the 2nd annual Heart Day on The Lake!   All proceeds raised from this event go directly towards congenital heart defect research for children.  CHDs are currently the leading cause of death within the first year of life and are the most common birth defect.  40,000 children will be born this year with a heart defect - many of those will be right here in the DFW metroplex.  The money raised last year has already supported research that could make an impact on any child who must undergo open heart surgery.  As parents who lost their child to a CHD, we were shocked to learn about the lack of funding available for research.  We need your help to make a difference!

Heart Day on the Lake 2006 will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 from 4pm - 8pm.  Again this year, the event will be held on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Lewisville at Cottonwood Creek Marina.  We'll enjoy a live performance by Texas' own Jon Christopher Davis as well as a silent auction and a raffle.   Activities include the huge Titanic Slide, a pirate ship jumphouse, rock climbing, face painting and more!   Enjoy barbecue by Randy White's BBQ as well as various drinks.  All activities and Randy White's BBQ is included in the ticket price.  Adult tickets are just $12 in advance and $17 at the door.  Children's tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door.  Ticket sales will be made available online soon as well as a couple of retail locations (locations will be announced shortly.)

Please come out and enjoy the family fun while supporting a great cause.  We are also still in need of donations for the silent auction.  Also this year we are accepting monetary donations in memory of loved ones or in honor of survivors.  (These donations will be listed on the event program as well as the event website.)  We will have a display of heart kids (both survivors and those who have passed on), if you would like a family member's picture included please contact us.  We would be honored to include your family member as we remember those who have passed on and those who inspire us to keep the hope alive.  For more information please check out the event website at www.hope4tinyhearts.com  or email Michelle@powerhousedesigns.com.  We hope to see you there!!
