“Every choice one makes either expands or contracts the area in which he can make and implement future decisions. When one makes a choice, he irrevocably binds himself to the consequences of that choice.” – Marion G. Romney

Issue of the Week:

I’ve started this new column where I will post a different issue each week for discussion. Your opinions mean a lot to me and I’d love to get your feedback on the subject. Please send me an email with your thoughts. While your feedback is for my own use at this time, I may publish comments in a future issue with just your first name…

This week’s issue has to do with whether Frisco should have a municipal golf course. Frisco has a number of golf courses presently, and some cities offer a municipal course. Should Frisco?

This Day in History – July 19, 1799: Rosetta Stone Found

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1799, during Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign, a
French soldier discovers a black basalt slab inscribed with ancient writing near the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles north of Alexandria. The irregularly shaped stone contained fragments of passages written in three different scripts: Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Egyptian demotic. The ancient Greek on the Rosetta Stone told archaeologists that it was inscribed by priests honoring the king of Egypt, Ptolemy V, in the second century B.C. More startlingly, the Greek passage
announced that the three scripts were all of identical meaning. The artifact thus held the key to solving the riddle of hieroglyphics, a written language that had been "dead" for nearly 2,000 years.

When Napoleon, an emperor known for his enlightened view of education,
art and culture, invaded Egypt in 1798, he took along a group of scholars and told them to seize all important cultural artifacts for France. Pierre Bouchard, one of Napoleon's soldiers, was aware of this order when he found the basalt stone, which was almost four feet long and two-and-a-half feet wide, at a fort near Rosetta. When the British defeated Napoleon in 1801, they took possession of the Rosetta Stone.

Several scholars, including Englishman Thomas Young made progress with the initial hieroglyphics analysis of the Rosetta Stone. French Egyptologist Jean-Francois Champollion (1790-1832), who had taught himself ancient languages, ultimately cracked the code and deciphered the hieroglyphics using his knowledge of Greek as a guide.
Hieroglyphics used pictures to represent objects, sounds and groups of sounds. Once the Rosetta Stone inscriptions were translated, the
language and culture of ancient Egypt was suddenly open to scientists as never before.

The Rosetta Stone has been housed at the British Museum in London since 1802, except for a brief period during World War I. At that time, museum officials moved it to a separate underground location, along with other irreplaceable items from the museum's collection, to protect in from the threat of bombs.

July is National Hemochromatosis Awareness Month:

So far this month we have covered UV Safety and Group B Strep Awareness…

Hemochromatosis (HHC) is a leading cause of iron overload disease. People with HHC absorb extra amounts of iron from the daily diet. The human body cannot rid itself of extra iron.

Over time, these excesses build up in major organs such as the heart, liver, pancreas, joints and pituitary. If the extra iron is not removed, these organs can become diseased...

Visit http://www.hemochromatosis.org/ for more information.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends,

This week’s newsletter is proudly sponsored by the Frisco Farmers Market. Come out this Friday or Saturday morning to Frisco Square to support this exciting new weekly event. Also check out the spotlight on this year’s National Night Out event, which takes place August 7. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

Please drive slowly through our neighborhoods. I see too many people driving too fast. Everybody is in a hurry to get somewhere and it only takes a second for a child to dart out into the street. Please be careful. Please also be careful at red lights. I continue to see too many people running through red lights. If you are waiting at a red light and it changes to green, wait a couple of seconds before proceeding. It could save your life.

Thank you to everybody who responded to last week’s “Issue of the Week: Public Transportation – How Important is it to have in Frisco?” I really appreciate everybody’s input and if I haven’t emailed you back personally, please know that I will. Every person’s response is important to me. This week’s issue, “Does Frisco Need a Municipal Golf Course?” is now posted in the left hand column. If you have an opinion on this, please write in.

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 40,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.

Newsletter Sponsor – Frisco Farmers Market to open this Friday, July 20:

The Frisco Noon Lions Club and Frisco Square will host the NEW Frisco Farmers Market at Frisco Square this Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – or until sellout.  The address is 6048 Frisco Square Boulevard, directly across from the Frisco City Hall and Library.

Keith Copp, the farmer who caused much excitement at Freedom Fest is returning, along with a new producer, The Honey Pot Store from McKinney. We’re recruiting more vendors too, but the official “Grand Opening” will be next weekend, July 27-28 and will run through October.

PLEASE come out on Friday and Saturday! We are very grateful to these first two participants and want to show them there IS a market for fresh produce and products in Frisco. We want them to COME BACK and to tell other vendors how great it is in Frisco!

The effort to start a Farmers Market started with the Frisco community. The City staff, the Lions, the Main Street Merchants and everyone else seems to really want this to want it to succeed. If we continue to get that support, our market will become a regular weekend feature of life in Frisco.  If you interesting in participating, contact Bob O’Bannon, Frisco Farmers Market Coordinator at bob@friscofarmersmarket.com or 214-538-8161.

Spotlight on National Night Out – August 7, 2007:

National Night Out is one of my favorite community events. Residents have block parties throughout the city and police, fire and public officials visit them, as long as they are registered. I personally wish we could do this every month as I love to visit with people. If you are having a party and would like for me to stop by, please let me know. I would love to visit everybody but I will visit as many parties as I can…

As our city has continued to grow we have been faced with more issues/challenges related to crime. Now more than ever we encourage every community to get involved proactively by partnering with the Frisco Police Department and Frisco Neighborhood Watch.

As you may be aware, every year on the first Tuesday of August, the Frisco Police Department, along with Frisco Neighborhood Watch, promote block parties throughout the City of Frisco for “National Night Out” (this year National Night Out will be on August 7th). This annual event serves as a culmination of our year-long crime prevention efforts and is a great way for neighbors to get out and meet each other. During NNO, police/fire personnel, Mayor and city council members, other city officials, public safety-affiliated volunteers and McGruff attend block parties throughout the city.

As a kick-off to NNO, the City of Frisco will be hosting the 12th Annual Green Home -Health & Safety Fair. The fair will be held on August 4th at The Commons Park from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The City of Frisco Green Home event is designed to promote energy conservation and environmental preservation, and will feather lots of energy and water conservation tips. The Health & Safety event will provide free screenings by Centennial Medical Center and others. Exhibitors representing numerous public safety/non-profit agencies will be on hand to promote safety, health, education and awareness. Wiffle Ball Home Run Derby, hosted by the City of Frisco Parks & Recreation Department and the “Texas DPS Mobile Drive License Express” providing driver’s license renewals are just two of the special events. The North Texas Tollway Authority will also be holding a drawing for a free toll tag.

There will be a host of other activities including face painting, fingerprinting, bounce houses, clowns, robots, and much more. During the fair we will also be holding our annual Carter BloodCare Blood Drive.

National Night Out serves as a great way to kick-off or reinvigorate neighborhood watch efforts in both new and older communities alike. We ask that all citizens, home owners' associations and other neighborhood groups support this very important crime prevention initiative by asking residents in every community to host block parties and participate in the events listed below. Feel free to go to www.frisconeighborhoodwatch.com for more information about NNO and to download the block party registration form - as well as to get information on the neighborhood watch program in Frisco.
