City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. When will the water restrictions be lifted on the J.R. Newman Park spray grounds? I understand that both Plano and Allen have lifted such restrictions on similar parks.

"Found in the West Falls Village subdivision and next to Izetta Sparks Elementary School, J.R. Newman Park is full of family features. According to Mr. Johnson, the Kiddie Korral play structure and picnic pavilion can provide lots of outdoor entertainment.

Cooling off in the park's new spray grounds will be a way to beat the heat of the summer - but not for a while. The park's spray grounds will remain turned off, as will the spray grounds at Shepherds Glen Park, until the city lifts its water restrictions.

The park also features a walking trail and poems sandblasted into the concrete sidewalks of the Kiddie Korral by artist John Runnels.

J.R. Newman Park is at 8211 Twin Fall Drive, near the intersection of Main Street and FM423."

A. Thanks for your note about the potential opening of the two different spray grounds that we have at J.R. Newman and Shepherds Glen neighborhood parks.

There was an agenda item found on the June 5, 2007 City Council agenda that had the Council consider and act upon modifying the current Stage 3 Water Restrictions for the City of Frisco.

One of the recommendations that was considered was the ability to open the spray parks that are found at the two referenced park sites.

The Council approved the recommendations of the staff to ease the watering restrictions and to allow the spray parks to operate. They should be operational very soon.

This Day in History – June 7, 1942, Battle of Midway Ends:

From the History Channel…

On June 7, 1942, the Battle of Midway--one of the most decisive U.S.
victories in its war against Japan--comes to an end. In the four-day
sea and air battle, the outnumbered U.S. Pacific Fleet succeeded in
destroying four Japanese aircraft carriers with the loss of only one
of its own, the Yorktown, thus reversing the tide against the
previously invincible Japanese navy.

In six months of offensives, the Japanese had triumphed in lands
throughout the Pacific, including Malaysia, Singapore, the Dutch East
Indies, the Philippines, and numerous island groups. The United States, however, was a growing threat, and Japanese Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto sought to destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet before it was large enough to outmatch his own. A thousand miles northwest of Honolulu, the strategic island of Midway became the focus of his scheme to smash U.S. resistance to Japan's imperial designs. Yamamoto's plan consisted of a feint toward Alaska followed by an invasion of Midway by a
Japanese strike force. When the U.S. Pacific Fleet arrived at Midway
to respond to the invasion, it would be destroyed by the superior
Japanese fleet waiting unseen to the west. If successful, the plan
would eliminate the U.S. Pacific Fleet and provide a forward outpost
from which the Japanese could eliminate any future American threat in
the Central Pacific.

Unfortunately for the Japanese, U.S. intelligence broke the Japanese
naval code, and the Americans anticipated the surprise attack. Three
heavy aircraft carriers of the U.S. Pacific Fleet were mustered to
challenge the four heavy Japanese carriers steaming toward Midway. In
early June, U.S. command correctly recognized a Japanese movement
against Alaska's Aleutian Islands as a diversionary tactic and kept
its forces massed around Midway. On June 3, the Japanese occupation
force was spotted steaming toward the island, and B-17 Flying Fortresses were sent out from Midway to bomb the strike force but failed to inflict damage. Early in the morning on June 4, a PBY
Catalina flying boat torpedoed a Japanese tanker transport, striking
the first blow of the Battle of Midway.

Later that morning, an advance Japanese squadron numbering more than 100 bombers and Zero fighters took off from the Japanese carriers to
bomb Midway. Twenty-six Wildcat fighters were sent up to intercept the
Japanese force and suffered heavy losses in their heroic defense of
Midway's air base. Soon after, bombers and torpedo planes based on
Midway took off to attack the Japanese carriers but failed to inflict serious damage. The first phase of the battle was over by 7:00 a.m.

In the meantime, 200 miles to the northeast, two U.S. attack fleets
caught the Japanese force entirely by surprise. Beginning around 9:30
a.m., torpedo bombers from the three U.S. carriers descended on the
Japanese carriers. Although nearly wiped out, they drew off enemy
fighters, and U.S. dive bombers penetrated, catching the Japanese
carriers while their decks were cluttered with aircraft and fuel. The
dive-bombers quickly destroyed three of the heavy Japanese carriers
and one heavy cruiser. The only Japanese carrier that initially
escaped destruction, the Hiryu, loosed all its aircraft against the American task force and managed to seriously damage the U.S. carrier Yorktown, forcing its abandonment. At about 5:00 p.m., dive-bombers from the U.S. carrier Enterprise returned the favor, mortally damaging the Hiryu. It was scuttled the next morning.

Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto still had numerous warships at his command,
but without his carriers and aircraft he was forced to abandon his
Midway invasion plans and begin a westward retreat. On June 5, a U.S.
task force pursued his fleet, but bad weather saved it from further
destruction. On June 6, the skies cleared, and U.S. aircraft resumed
their assault, sinking a cruiser and damaging several other warships.
After the planes returned to their carriers, the Americans broke off
from the pursuit. Meanwhile, a Japanese submarine torpedoed and
fatally wounded the Yorktown, which was in the process of being salvaged. It finally rolled over and sank at dawn on June 7, bringing an end to the battle.

At the Battle of Midway, Japan lost four carriers, a cruiser, and 292 aircraft, and suffered 2,500 casualties. The U.S. lost the Yorktown, the destroyer USS Hammann, 145 aircraft, and suffered 307 casualties. Japan's losses hobbled its naval might--bringing Japanese and American sea power to approximate parity--and marked the turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II. In August 1942, the great U.S.
counteroffensive began at Guadalcanal and did not cease until Japan's
surrender three years later.

June is Potty Training Awareness  Month:

More than 4 million parents are expected to begin potty training this year, and undoubtedly would welcome any advice to make the transition process easier. To celebrate June as Potty Training Awareness Month, during June 6-10 from 9am-5pm ET, parents can call the potty training "Totline" at 1-877-4BIG-KID and speak directly to one of the Potty Training Partners, a panel of pediatricians, child psychologists and parenting experts. Parents are able to ask these experts any of their potty training questions with the comfort of knowing they're getting help from someone who understands how frustrating the process can be. In addition, the first 10,000 callers to the Totline in June will receive a newly developed, comprehensive potty training guide. The Pull-Ups Way to Go Success Guide has flexible advice to help parents customize their approach to their particular child. The Potty Training Partners are also sharing their top 10 tips for potty training on the road--with smart solutions to keep potty training on track when families head out on vacation this summer. Also, don't forget to consider these tips for training a toddler in daycare.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

$50 Initial Deep Cleaning Discount Offered to New DeBonair Clients!!:

Debbie Childers, owner of DeBonair Custom Cleaning, is offering a $50 discount to all new clients in June.    Debbie will schedule time to meet you in your home to discuss your specific deep cleaning needs.  During that time, we will determine if a one-time cleaning is needed only or if a consistent cleaning routine is preferred.  After the meeting, she and an employee will schedule and then perform your initial cleaning needs.

Debbie creates a personalized checklist for your home identifying your individual cleaning requirements such as: specific and unique supplies needed for various surfaces within your home, specific items needing special attention, your likes/dislikes when working with a cleaning service, etc.  The customized list is “your individual wants and needs” and allows DeBonair to provide a more personalize service to you.&nb
