Once upon a time, in a land not too far from here…well, Oklahoma is not too far from here.
This week, my daughter and I went to Oklahoma City to watch some of the Women’s College Softball World Series. After getting a little sunburned during the afternoon games, we decided to head back to our hotel in Bricktown. Being big Toby Keith fans, we decided to go to “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill” for dinner and see if Toby was hanging around, or something.
We sat down and had a drink – water for Kaleigh and a beer for me. Little did I know that Toby Keith himself would then buy me a beer. But that’s not all, we even got to sit in the back of his pickup truck for a picture!
Ok, I have to admit, it didn’t happen exactly like that, but it was close. Being the inquisitive guy that I am, I asked the waitress if Toby comes around much. She indicated he comes around about every three months and showed us where his table is. If you’ve never been to “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill”, and you are fan, there are some cool pictures on the wall and it’s a generally cool place to hang out.
In any event, how did Toby buy me a beer? Well, after my beer arrived from our regular waitress, another waitress brought one over, not knowing I already got what I ordered. I made her aware of this fact and she shrugged her shoulders and said, “This one is on the house!” So, I took that to mean that Toby bought me a beer! And then we sat in the back of the pickup truck that was inside for a photo op. Kaleigh bought herself the obligatory t-shirt, so we were both happy.

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.
May Neighborhood of the Month Winner:
The May neighborhood of the month goes to…Heather Ridge Estates!!! Resident Jill Hornback submitted Heather Ridge Estates and was chosen the winner.
Jill, tell everybody about Heather Ridge Estates and why it is such a great neighborhood to live in…
What attributes make Heather Ridge Estates the neighborhood of the month? The amazing residents and committees who strive to ensure family fun activities throughout the year. The beautiful Amenity Center is the central point of several high energy neighborhood events such as the 2007 Flashlight Walk/Block party which was used by the Frisco Police department to "kick off" National Night Out in Frisco, Neighborhood Watch National Night Out party, Easter egg hunt with over 2500 eggs, Memorial Day pool party, and a 4th of July parade and family picnic. The HOA sponsored committees work hard not only to provide activities for residents, but also events that benefit Frisco charities such as a neighborhood food drive, toys for tots, and neighbors in need which residents combine efforts to help one another in times of difficulties. Many other activities take place in Heather Ridge Estates such as a monthly girls night out, dinner club for residents over 55 years old, weekly playgroups, and an annual kid's campout where everyone is invited to pitch a tent in their front yards and watch the stars. The main goal for the Heather Ridge Estates HOA board and residents is to promote a social atmosphere among residents, display friendly hospitality to new neighbors, and strive to ensure proactive and innovative approach to making Heather Ridge Estates the greatest and safest neighborhood in Frisco.
May Citizens of the Month Winner:
The May Citizens of the Month are…the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team! Proud parent Teressa Pavich submitted this entry and they were chosen the winner. Here is what Teressa had to say about the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and why they are so deserving of this recognition.
Sixteen 6th-8th grade members of the Clark Middle School Band participated in the Frisco Relay For Life on Friday April 20th which benefits the American Cancer Society. They were led by Assistant Band Director Mrs. Gayle Amato, this outstanding group of students chose to “Lick Cancer”. They received a Gold Level Award from the American Cancer Society for raising over $5000. They were the 4th ranked team at the event and raised $6101.52. Fourteen of their sixteen team members were able to spend the entire night at the event and all fourteen weary participants ensured that they had at least one member of their team walking on the track for the 12 hour duration of the event – in fact most of the team the team would walk together!
They were outstanding ambassadors for the Clark Middle School Band and for Frisco ISD. They showed incredible compassion and dedication to a worthwhile cause and it warms my heart to know that these amazing young adults already understand the word ‘community’ on a level that many adults can not.
Congratulations to the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and everybody who participated in this great event.
City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:
Q. We are fairly new to the Frisco area, and would like to get to know what is being built near us. Is there a simple list of approved business applications or something like that which does not require searching through meeting minutes and GIS maps?
A. To see a list of approved permits and certificates of occupancy you can go to the Planning & Development page of the City's website and access the Building Inspections menu on the left side of the page. Select Monthly Reports from the list and then access the list, which is published on a monthly basis. The links at the top of the page provide detailed information about each application. For general information you may access the links at the bottom of the page which does not include all of the contractor information.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:
If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.
Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Drought Update:
With all the rain we have been having as of late, many of you have been asking if the “Stage 3” restrictions are going to be lifted. While I think water conservation is going to be a way of life from this point forward in North Texas, the question was asked of our Director of Public Works, Gary Hartwell, and his responses follows…
“The Drought Contingency Plan of the North Texas Municipal Water District has nine triggers for the initiation and termination of Stage 3. The levels in Lake Lavon, Lake Chapman, and Lake Texoma represent only three of those triggers. Currently, the most significant trigger is related to exceeding the permitted supply. The State of Texas provides a legal limit to the amount of water a water supplier can deliver to customers in any calendar year. Our district has exceeded that amount for the last two years due to the lack of rainfall and the excessive use of water for outdoor watering. The district has accelerated the construction of two water supply projects due for completion in late 2007 or early 2008. These projects will significantly increase the permitted supply of the district and reduce the need for restrictions.
The City of Frisco needs to support the recommendations of the district regarding water conservation and drought contingency plans. We will continue to explore ways help our residents water more efficiently.”
That being said, the city staff will be bringing forth recommendations to the City Council at the next meeting on June 5th regarding some changes to the current restrictions. I’ll update you next week as to what these changes entail.
