A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…Erika, a.k.a Princess Leia, was in distress. She had been kidnapped by the evil empire (no, it wasn’t the New York Yankees), and it was up to me to save her. After fighting off storm troopers aboard the death star, C3PO snapped this picture just before we boarded the Millennium Falcon to escape the Death Star and save the day.
Ok, got lost in the world of Star Wars there for a second. Actually, the story isn’t too far off. A time not too long ago (last Thanksgiving), in a place not too far away (Disney World in Florida), we had just left the Star Wars ride when the clever little Disney sales person asked if we wanted to try a picture for free. Well, of course after we saw me as Han Solo and Erika as Princess Leia, we had to give the amusement park empire about $35 for the picture.
I’ll put up the picture of me as Shrek and Erika as Princess Fiona in the near future. Silly people!

Inspirational Quote of the Week:
“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.” – Charles Swindoll

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.
May Neighborhood of the Month Winner:
The May neighborhood of the month goes to…Heather Ridge Estates!!! Resident Jill Hornback submitted Heather Ridge Estates and was chosen the winner.
Jill, tell everybody about Heather Ridge Estates and why it is such a great neighborhood to live in…
What attributes make Heather Ridge Estates the neighborhood of the month? The amazing residents and committees who strive to ensure family fun activities throughout the year. The beautiful Amenity Center is the central point of several high energy neighborhood events such as the 2007 Flashlight Walk/Block party which was used by the Frisco Police department to "kick off" National Night Out in Frisco, Neighborhood Watch National Night Out party, Easter egg hunt with over 2500 eggs, Memorial Day pool party, and a 4th of July parade and family picnic. The HOA sponsored committees work hard not only to provide activities for residents, but also events that benefit Frisco charities such as a neighborhood food drive, toys for tots, and neighbors in need which residents combine efforts to help one another in times of difficulties. Many other activities take place in Heather Ridge Estates such as a monthly girls night out, dinner club for residents over 55 years old, weekly playgroups, and an annual kid's campout where everyone is invited to pitch a tent in their front yards and watch the stars. The main goal for the Heather Ridge Estates HOA board and residents is to promote a social atmosphere among residents, display friendly hospitality to new neighbors, and strive to ensure proactive and innovative approach to making Heather Ridge Estates the greatest and safest neighborhood in Frisco.
May Citizens of the Month Winner:
The May Citizens of the Month are…the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team! Proud parent Teressa Pavich submitted this entry and they were chosen the winner. Here is what Teressa had to say about the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and why they are so deserving of this recognition.
Sixteen 6th-8th grade members of the Clark Middle School Band participated in the Frisco Relay For Life on Friday April 20th which benefits the American Cancer Society. They were led by Assistant Band Director Mrs. Gayle Amato, this outstanding group of students chose to “Lick Cancer”. They received a Gold Level Award from the American Cancer Society for raising over $5000. They were the 4th ranked team at the event and raised $6101.52. Fourteen of their sixteen team members were able to spend the entire night at the event and all fourteen weary participants ensured that they had at least one member of their team walking on the track for the 12 hour duration of the event – in fact most of the team the team would walk together!
They were outstanding ambassadors for the Clark Middle School Band and for Frisco ISD. They showed incredible compassion and dedication to a worthwhile cause and it warms my heart to know that these amazing young adults already understand the word ‘community’ on a level that many adults can not.
Congratulations to the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and everybody who participated in this great event.
City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:
Q. Due to the heavy rains in the Frisco area the Mosquitoes are out in force. Has there been any consideration to spraying for these insects?
A. At this time, the City of Frisco does not proactively spray chemicals to address adult mosquitoes. Certain mosquitoes will breed in stagnant water and most adults will nest in high grass/brush/trees. This time of year, it is important for homeowners to reduce possible nesting sites, monitor property for stagnant water and familiarize themselves with personal protective measures. We do monitor the area for stagnant water in an effort to address areas that may allow breeding of mosquitoes. Our last inspection of potential areas revealed water running clear with no visible larvae present. Please visit our informational site that details our programs. If you observe areas of high, unmaintained grass please contact Code Enforcement at 972.292.5302.
This Day in History – May 23, 1934: Police Kill Famous Outlaws Bonnie and Clyde
From the History Channel…
On this day in 1934, notorious criminals
Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death by Texas and Louisiana
state police while driving a stolen car near Sailes, Louisiana.
May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month:
So far this month we have covered Osteoporosis Awareness, Arthritis Awareness, and Stroke Awareness.
Each year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) declares May to be "National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month." It's a peak season for asthma and allergy sufferers, and a perfect time to educate your patients, family, friends, co-workers and others about these diseases.
Each year, AAFA asks the President of the United States to officially designate May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness month. We make it easy for you to join in the activities by inviting you to use AAFA materials and tools to bring healthy messages to work, school and home.
Get the Awareness Month Planning Kit from the EPA (PDF file).
Our theme, "for life without limits," is a constant reminder that, today, nothing stands in the way to having a full and active life -- with proper diagnosis, prevention and treatment, there are no limits to what people with asthma and allergies can do. And, this theme is a promise to future generations that we will continue to search for cures to eliminate asthma and allergies and burden they currently cause millions of Americans.
Visit the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America’s web site at www.aafa.org for more information.
Just a reminder - this newsletter is put together with information from many different sources. You can also view this newsletter and past newsletters in the News section of my web site at www.mattlafatamarketing.com. Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:
If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.
Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
All the opinions, endorsements or recommendations in this newsletter are mine alone and they do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of any organization or group with whom I am affiliated or the individuals who are a part of such organizations and groups. You should not rely on any statement made in this newsletter as evidenced of how I may act as a member of any organization or group. Inclusion of news, events and other information in this newsletter does not imply an endorsement; it merely serves as my effort to be of service to the readers.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends,
This week’s newsletter is sponsored by Dave and Buster’s in Frisco, where you can bring your friends tomorrow to kick off the weekend with ½ price drinks 4:30pm-7pm AND free music in the party room with 100.3 JACK FM and the variety band, CoCo Bann! A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.
No, the week hasn’t actually gone by any faster than normal. This edition of our community newsletter has actually come out a day early. I’ve been toying with the idea of issuing the newsletter a day earlier each week so since it is my newsletter, and I feel like doing it, I am trying it this week.
Memorial Day is this coming Monday, May 28, and is an important reminder of those who have died in the service of this great country.
With the end of the school season, please keep in mind that there will be more children out and about in our neighborhoods throughout the day. Please drive slowly and try not to allow distractions to get in your way. It only takes a second for disaster to strike and not only could the life of a child and their family be changed forever, but so could yours.
If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 40,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.
