The Mrs. Texas United States pageant, of which I am the co-director with my fiancée Erika, was a huge success this past weekend. Mrs. Belton (Megan Zucaro), who was the 1st runner-up last year, was crowned as the new Mrs. Texas and will go on to Las Vegas in July to compete in the nationals.
It was a fun-filled weekend and on Friday night, we took the contestants and their spouses for a cruise on Lake Lewisville aboard the “Chamonix II” catamaran. Chef Bill Brune with Texas Chef Foods did a great job with the catering as well.
As you can see from the above picture, you may be asking yourself, “why is Matt driving the boat?” “Has he been watching too many Gilligan’s Island re-runs and does he think he is piloting the S.S. Minnow on a three-hour tour?” Well, let me tell you how I ended up as the Skipper…
There were about 50 or so people on the boat and everybody was having a great time. Stevie G., our photographer for the entire event, was taking numerous pictures all over the boat. One of the contestants decided she would re-enact a scene from the movie “Titanic” and stand up on the bow. Well, trying to do that in high heels was certainly a challenge, but she was able to get up there for that Kodak moment. The captain started yelling something but with all the laughter and music playing, it was hard to hear. All of a sudden, we figured out what he was yelling about, but it was too late.
Another boat sped by us, a little too close, causing quite a wake. Well, you guessed it. The boat rocked and over the railing went the contestant. Although there were screams of horror and concern throughout the boat, the captain calmly grabbed a life preserver and jumped over to swim towards her. As the highest ranking official left on the boat, I assume command and brought the boat around to pick both of them up out of the water. It was actually very exciting.
So why am I laughing in the picture? Well, I just made an announcement on the microphone in my hand that this would make a great picture for my newsletter and what kind of story would I make up this time for the amusement of my readers. J Enjoy the newsletter!

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.
May Neighborhood of the Month Winner:
The May neighborhood of the month goes to…Heather Ridge Estates!!! Resident Jill Hornback submitted Heather Ridge Estates and was chosen the winner.
Jill, tell everybody about Heather Ridge Estates and why it is such a great neighborhood to live in…
What attributes make Heather Ridge Estates the neighborhood of the month? The amazing residents and committees who strive to ensure family fun activities throughout the year. The beautiful Amenity Center is the central point of several high energy neighborhood events such as the 2007 Flashlight Walk/Block party which was used by the Frisco Police department to "kick off" National Night Out in Frisco, Neighborhood Watch National Night Out party, Easter egg hunt with over 2500 eggs, Memorial Day pool party, and a 4th of July parade and family picnic. The HOA sponsored committees work hard not only to provide activities for residents, but also events that benefit Frisco charities such as a neighborhood food drive, toys for tots, and neighbors in need which residents combine efforts to help one another in times of difficulties. Many other activities take place in Heather Ridge Estates such as a monthly girls night out, dinner club for residents over 55 years old, weekly playgroups, and an annual kid's campout where everyone is invited to pitch a tent in their front yards and watch the stars. The main goal for the Heather Ridge Estates HOA board and residents is to promote a social atmosphere among residents, display friendly hospitality to new neighbors, and strive to ensure proactive and innovative approach to making Heather Ridge Estates the greatest and safest neighborhood in Frisco.
May Citizens of the Month Winner:
The May Citizens of the Month are…the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team! Proud parent Teressa Pavich submitted this entry and they were chosen the winner. Here is what Teressa had to say about the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and why they are so deserving of this recognition.
Sixteen 6th-8th grade members of the Clark Middle School Band participated in the Frisco Relay For Life on Friday April 20th which benefits the American Cancer Society. They were led by Assistant Band Director Mrs. Gayle Amato, this outstanding group of students chose to “Lick Cancer”. They received a Gold Level Award from the American Cancer Society for raising over $5000. They were the 4th ranked team at the event and raised $6101.52. Fourteen of their sixteen team members were able to spend the entire night at the event and all fourteen weary participants ensured that they had at least one member of their team walking on the track for the 12 hour duration of the event – in fact most of the team the team would walk together!
They were outstanding ambassadors for the Clark Middle School Band and for Frisco ISD. They showed incredible compassion and dedication to a worthwhile cause and it warms my heart to know that these amazing young adults already understand the word ‘community’ on a level that many adults can not.
Congratulations to the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and everybody who participated in this great event.
City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:
Q. What are the rules for HOA garage Sale signs? When can they be put out and where can they be put? Ours is a community garage sale and the HOA has signs that need to be out but we do not want to violate any ordinances.
A. The requirements for HOA-Neighborhood Signs are available at www.friscotexas.gov, select 'Departments', slide to 'Planning & Development', then select the 'Most Requested Ordinances' icon. The ordinances are listed alphabetically. Select the Sign Ordinance and view the requirements for HOA-Neighborhood Signs. If you have any questions, please contact Code Enforcement at (972) 292-5302 or via e-mail to code@friscotexas.gov.
This Day in History – May 17, 1973 - Televised Watergate Hearings Begin
From the History Channel…
In Washington, D.C., the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, headed by Senator Sam Ervin of North Carolina, begins televised hearings on the escalating Watergate affair. One week later, Harvard law professor Archibald Cox was sworn in as special Watergate prosecutor.
On June 17, 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into and illegally wiretapping the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. One of the suspects, James W. McCord Jr., was revealed to be the salaried security coordinator for President Richard Nixon's reelection committee. Two other men with White House ties were later implicated in the break-in: E. Howard Hunt, Jr., a former White House aide, and G. Gordon Liddy, finance counsel for the Committee for the Re-election of the President. Journalists and the Select Committee discovered a higher-echelon conspiracy surrounding the incident, and a political scandal of unprecedented magnitude erupted.
In May 1973, the special Senate committee began televised proceedings on the Watergate affair. During the Senate hearings, former White House legal counsel John Dean testified that the Watergate break-in had been approved by former Attorney General John Mitchell with the knowledge of chief White House advisers John Ehrlichman and H.R. Haldeman, and that President Nixon had been aware of the cover-up. Meanwhile, Watergate prosecutor Cox and his staff began to uncover widespread evidence of political espionage by the Nixon reelection committee, illegal wiretapping of thousands of citizens by the administration, and contributions to the Republican Party in return for political favors.
In July, the existence of what were to be called the Watergate tapes--official recordings of White House conversations between Nixon and his staff--was revealed during the Senate hearings. Cox subpoenaed these tapes, and after three months of delay President Nixon agreed to send summaries of the recordings. Cox rejected the summaries, and Nixon fired him. His successor as special prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, leveled indictments against several high-ranking administration officials, including Mitchell and Dean, who were duly convicted.
Public confidence in the president rapidly waned, and by the end of July 1974 the House Judiciary Committee had adopted three articles of impeachment against President Nixon: obstruction of justice, abuse of presidential powers, and hindrance of the impeachment process. On July 30, under coercion from the Supreme Court, Nixon finally released the Watergate tapes. On August 5, transcripts of the recordings were released, including a segment in which the president was heard instructing Haldeman to order the FBI to halt the Watergate investigation. Four days later, Nixon became the first president in U.S. history to resign. On September 8, his successor, President Gerald Ford, pardoned him from any criminal charges.
May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month:
Last week we covered Arthritis Awareness and the week before it was Stroke Awareness.
Each May the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) celebrates Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. NOF has developed campaigns whose themes, messages and activities build towards the goal of increasing awareness of and action related to osteoporosis. NOF, together with its partners, has strived to make this all too prevalent disease relevant, and ensure that corresponding messages are strong, engaging and encourage action. Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month in May is an opportunity for NOF, along with individuals and partners across the country, to raise awareness of osteoporosis and bone health on a grassroots and national level.
To recognize Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month in 2007, NOF is developing a Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign and Bone Tool Kit with the theme, "Osteoporosis. It's Beatable. It's Treatable." that address the important issues associated with osteoporosis for different audiences, and encourage people to take action to protect their bone health and prevent osteoporosis.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends,
This week’s newsletter is proudly sponsored by Legendary Self Storage and their “beat any price in Frisco” special offer. Also check out the spotlight on Frisco Square and a summary of projects going on in this very exciting long-term project. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.
With the current school year coming to a close, please be cognizant of excited kids paying a little less attention to cars and traffic and more to the fact that the school year is coming to an end. Please drive slowly through our neighborhoods and please try to keep streets more clear by not parking on the street wherever possible. Also, and this is a major pet peeve of mine, when dropping your children off at school, please play by the same rules as everybody else. I constantly see cars darting in and out of others rather than waiting in line. Everybody’s time is just as important as the next person so please just slow down and wait your turn.
100.3 JACK FM and Dave & Busters here in Frisco are teaming up for a summer series of Patio Parties. Next Thursday, May 24, join them to kick off the first one from 6pm-8pm. With no cover charge, there’s no reason not to grab your friends and head to Dave & Busters for a great time!
If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 40,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.

Spotlight on…Frisco Square:
As you know, I think Frisco Square is one of the most exciting projects taking shape in Frisco. It’s been a little slow to get to where it is but you should really see it take off over the next few years. Here’s a summary of the Frisco Square project.
With new office and retail construction underway, Frisco Square continues to thrive along with the boom of growth throughout Collin County. Frisco Square has recently broken ground on a 50,000 square foot, four-story building – ground floor retail over office - to delivery in December of this year. The project has also recently announced several new retail tenants to be open by the end of the year, including Mattito’s Mexican Restaurant, Studio Movie Grill and Lochrann’s Irish Pub and Eatery.
Frisco Square is home to the City of Frisco’s City Hall and Library, along with the NBC5 Collin County Broadcast Sidewalk Studio and Weather Center. It is a pedestrian-friendly urban development that also features a unique blend of shopping, dining, office space, apartment living, town homes and park space. When complete, the 147-acre project will include 4.4 million square foot project, showcasing approximately 1.5 million square feet of office space, 500,000 square feet of retail space, 1400 apartments, 500 town homes/stacked-flats/condominiums, and 144,000 square feet of municipal facilities.
Designed by nationally renowned architect, David M. Schwarz and recently re-designed by RTKL, Frisco Square is located in the heart of Frisco at the southeast corner of the Dallas North Tollway and Main Street, directly across from Pizza Hut Park, the world’s largest soccer complex and home to FC Dallas. Additional information on Frisco Square is available at www.friscosquare.com http://www.friscosquare.com or through the Frisco Square information center at 469-633-1721.
