I hope everybody had a great week. I traveled to Philadelphia Wednesday night to give a presentation to a prospect on Thursday. Due to weather issues in Dallas, I sat in the plane, on the runway, for over three hours before taking off. You would think the airlines, who obviously knew of the weather delays, wouldn’t make you get on the plane. I guess it helps them keep their “on time” departure, although I would add an asterisk. * On-time away from the gate, but not necessarily in the air! In any event, enjoy the newsletter and I hope you get a chance to go to the Mother’s Day Brunch at the Embassy on Sunday and then attend the Mrs. Texas Pageant later that day at the Westin.
This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. There are so many amazing things in this newsletter, as there are every week. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips. Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this list as a more informed society is a more functional society.
If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than forty thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send me an email so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.
If you received this from somebody else and would like to be added to the list, just send me an email. Your email address will never be sold or given to anybody else for any reason. All newsletters can also be found on our web site at www.mattlafatamarketing.com.

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.
May Neighborhood of the Month Winner:
The May neighborhood of the month goes to…Heather Ridge Estates!!! Resident Jill Hornback submitted Heather Ridge Estates and was chosen the winner. Read about Heather Ridge Estates in this issue and what makes it so special.
May Citizens of the Month Winner:
The May Citizens of the Month are…the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team! Read more about why they were chosen in this issue.
City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:
Q. Is there any information on city codes regarding roof vents for attic ventilation? I was considering adding more turbine type vents to my roof but wasn't sure if the city had any codes on that type of work.
A. The International Residential Code requires a minimum of 1 square foot of vent per each 150 square feet of attic space. This can reduced to 1 square foot per 300 square feet if vents are provided in the eaves of your home. These are minimum requirements so installing additional vents would not be prohibited.

May is Arthritis Awareness Month:
Last week we covered Stroke Awareness, as May is also Stroke Awareness month.
Arthritis is often misunderstood, largely due to misconceptions, misinformation, and old wives tales which persist. Unless the difficulties and limitations imposed by arthritis affect you or a family member directly, your exposure to the disease may be minimal. Arthritis is a complicated disease because there are many different types of arthritis, various symptom patterns, and numerous treatment options. Severe forms of arthritis can be disabling and can affect many aspects of daily living.

Just a reminder - this newsletter is put together with information from many different sources. You can also view this newsletter and past newsletters in the News section of my web site at www.mattlafatamarketing.com. If you do not receive your emailed newsletter for some reason, please visit www.mattlafatamarketing.com each week as some mail servers block emails that are sent to multiple recipients. Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
All the opinions, endorsements or recommendations in this newsletter are mine alone and they do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of any organization or group with whom I am affiliated or the individuals who are a part of such organizations and groups. You should not rely on any statement made in this newsletter as evidenced of how I may act as a member of any organization or group. Inclusion of news, events and other information in this newsletter does not imply an endorsement; it merely serves as my effort to be of service to the readers.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Upcoming City Council Elections – Election Day is this Saturday:
Some people have asked who I will endorse in this election. As a current public official I do not feel it is right to publicly endorse a candidate running for office as I will be working with whoever gets elected to office. Any of the candidates listed below should win on their own merit and you need to get informed about who you would like to vote for. Please keep in mind that local officials have a greater impact on your daily lives than any state or federal official and I hope that you will get out and vote for who you believe is the strongest candidate to keep this city going in the right direction.
This Saturday (May 12) will be a local election to fill two council seats. Six residents are running for the two open seats and you can find information about voting on the city’s web site.
The following candidates; Jeff Cheney, Bart Crowder, and Fred Pascarelli, are running for Place 2, currently held by Bob Allen.
The following candidates; Chris Moss, David Preston, and David Prince are running for Place 4, currently held by Maher Maso.
May Neighborhood of the Month Winner – Heather Ridge Estates:
The May neighborhood of the month goes to…Heather Ridge Estates!!! Jill Hornback, resident and Neighborhood Watch Captain for Heather Ridge Estates, submitted the entry and was chosen the winner. I interviewed Jill about Heather Ridge Estates and what makes it so great. In case you don’t know where it is, it is located on the east side of Teel, north of Main Street.
Jill, tell everybody about Heather Ridge Estates and why it is such a great neighborhood to live in…
What attributes make Heather Ridge Estates the neighborhood of the month? The amazing residents and committees who strive to ensure family fun activities throughout the year. The beautiful Amenity Center is the central point of several high energy neighborhood events such as the 2007 Flashlight Walk/Block party which was used by the Frisco Police department to "kick off" National Night Out in Frisco, Neighborhood Watch National Night Out party, Easter egg hunt with over 2500 eggs, Memorial Day pool party, and a 4th of July parade and family picnic. The HOA sponsored committees work hard not only to provide activities for residents, but also events that benefit Frisco charities such as a neighborhood food drive, toys for tots, and neighbors in need which residents combine efforts to help one another in times of difficulties. Many other activities take place in Heather Ridge Estates such as a monthly girls night out, dinner club for residents over 55 years old, weekly playgroups, and an annual kid's campout where everyone is invited to pitch a tent in their front yards and watch the stars. The main goal for the Heather Ridge Estates HOA board and residents is to promote a social atmosphere among residents, display friendly hospitality to new neighbors, and strive to ensure proactive and innovative approach to making Heather Ridge Estates the greatest and safest neighborhood in Frisco.
If you want to nominate your neighborhood as a future neighborhood of the month, please write to community@mattlafatamarketing.com and tell me why your neighborhood is so special or unique!
May Citizen of the Month Winner:
The May citizen of the month goes to…the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team! Proud parent Teressa Pavich submitted this entry and they were chosen the winner. Here is what Teressa had to say about the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and why they are so deserving of this recognition.
Sixteen 6th-8th grade members of the Clark Middle School Band participated in the Frisco Relay For Life on Friday April 20th which benefits the American Cancer Society. They were led by Assistant Band Director Mrs. Gayle Amato, this outstanding group of students chose to “Lick Cancer”. They received a Gold Level Award from the American Cancer Society for raising over $5000. They were the 4th ranked team at the event and raised $6101.52. Fourteen of their sixteen team members were able to spend the entire night at the event and all fourteen weary participants ensured that they had at least one member of their team walking on the track for the 12 hour duration of the event – in fact most of the team the team would walk together!
They were outstanding ambassadors for the Clark Middle School Band and for Frisco ISD. They showed incredible compassion and dedication to a worthwhile cause and it warms my heart to know that these amazing young adults already understand the word ‘community’ on a level that many adults can not.
Congratulations to the Clark Middle School Band Relay For Life Team and everybody who participated in this great event.
If you want to nominate a citizen as a future citizen of the month, please write to community@mattlafatamarketing.com and tell me about them.
