Brief Mayoral Campaign Update:

Please read my blog for more campaign updates and important information.

Thank you to the Frisco Fire Fighters Association for honoring me last week with their endorsement of our campaign for Mayor. This is perhaps the greatest endorsement given out so far in this election and I am extremely grateful and look forward to being the next Mayor of Frisco.

The storms continue to do a job on our signs so if yours has blown away or is damaged, please let us know so that the “Sign Fairy” can get you a new one. Also, if you don’t yet have a sign and would like to proudly display a yard sign and your support for the next Mayor of Frisco, please let us know.

Thank you to everybody who has been helping in any way with this campaign. We are so excited about what we plan to accomplish after I get elected as your next Mayor of Frisco and need your continued help in spreading the word and encouraging people to vote early through May 6. More details such as are where and when can be found in the newsletter.

Mornings with Matt:

“Mornings with Matt” takes places each Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30 at It’s A Grind located at the Shops at Starwood (SW corner of Lebanon and the Dallas North Tollway). Stop by on Wednesdays to talk about issues facing our great city, or really anything for that matter. As an additional note, somebody asked if I will continue doing this after the good citizens of Frisco elect me as their next Mayor. The answer is a big YES as I want to make sure the Office of the Mayor is as open and accessible to the public as possible. I guess we will then change the name to “Mornings with the Mayor”.

This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.  Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this list as a more informed society is a more functional society.

If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than forty thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send me an email so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. Is there anything that can be done about all the people that have their dogs leave a gift on our lawns? I have seen people walking their dogs and leave a huge drive-by and some that just let the dogs out their front door to take care of it on the neighbor's lawn.

A. There are two issues here.

1. Dogs being walked on a leash leaving unwanted deposits.

It is not allowed. However, the biggest problem is catching someone in the act. The homeowner will be the best person to catch someone not respecting their property. We suggest that you ask the person if they need a bag to pick up the waste if you see it in progress. Having a camera ready if they become rude and say that they aren't going to pick up the waste comes in handy. Take a picture and tell them that you are going to be calling Animal Control. This will usually get them to change their tune or pick another route to walk their dog. Animal Control can talk to a neighbor if you suspect who is doing it but haven't caught them yet.

2. Homeowners letting their pets run loose in their front yards.

The same animal at large rules apply even if it is in someone’s own front yard. Dogs will be dogs. Even the best trained dog may react in a manner that is not normal if another dog or animal is in the area. Not all people like a strange dog running up to smell or greet them while they are taking a walk on a public sidewalk.

It is always a good idea to call and talk with Animal Control about any animal questions. It is hard to respond to every possible situation that may occur through a posting or email. A person to person contact allows us to cover all of the "what if" questions. The phone number to Animal Control is 972-292-5303.

This Day in History – May 2, 1933: Loch Ness Monster Sighted

From the History Channel…

Although accounts of an aquatic beast living in Scotland's Loch Ness date back 1,500 years, the modern legend of the Loch Ness Monster is born when a sighting makes local news on May 2, 1933. The newspaper Inverness Courier related an account of a local couple who claimed to have seen "an enormous animal rolling and plunging on the surface." The story of the "monster" (a moniker chosen by the Courier editor) became a media phenomenon, with London newspapers sending correspondents to Scotland and a circus offering a 20,000 pound sterling reward for capture of the beast.

Loch Ness, located in the Scottish Highlands, has the largest volume of fresh water in Great Britain; the body of water reaches a depth of nearly 800 feet and a length of about 23 miles. Scholars of the Loch Ness Monster find a dozen references to "Nessie" in Scottish history, dating back to around A.D. 500, when local Picts carved a strange aquatic creature into standing stones near Loch Ness. The earliest written reference to a monster in Loch Ness is a 7th-century biography of Saint Columba, the Irish missionary who introduced Christianity to Scotland. In 565, according to the biographer, Columba was on his way to visit the king of the northern Picts near Inverness when he stopped at Loch Ness to confront a beast that had been killing people in the lake. Seeing a large beast about to attack another man, Columba intervened, invoking the name of God and commanding the creature to "go back with all speed." The monster retreated and never killed another man.

In 1933, a new road was completed along Loch Ness' shore, affording drivers a clear view of the loch. After an April 1933 sighting was reported in the local paper on May 2, interest steadily grew, especially after another couple claimed to have seen the beast on land, crossing the shore road. Several British newspapers sent reporters to Scotland, including London's Daily Mail, which hired big-game hunter Marmaduke Wetherell to capture the beast. After a few days searching the loch, Wetherell reported finding footprints of a large four-legged animal. In response, the Daily Mail carried the dramatic headline: "MONSTER OF LOCH NESS IS NOT LEGEND BUT A FACT." Scores of tourists descended on Loch Ness and sat in boats or decks chairs waiting for an appearance by the beast. Plaster casts of the footprints were sent to the British Natural History Museum, which reported that the tracks were that of a hippopotamus, specifically one hippopotamus foot, probably stuffed. The hoax temporarily deflated Loch Ness Monster mania, but stories of sightings continued.

A famous 1934 photograph seemed to show a dinosaur-like creature with a long neck emerging out of the murky waters, leading some to speculate that "Nessie" was a solitary survivor of the long-extinct plesiosaurs. The aquatic plesiosaurs were thought to have died off with the rest of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Loch Ness was frozen solid during the recent ice ages, however, so this creature would have had to have made its way up the River Ness from the sea in the past 10,000 years. And the plesiosaurs, believed to be cold-blooded, would not long survive in the frigid waters of Loch Ness. More likely, others suggested, it was an archeocyte, a primitive whale with a serpentine neck that is thought to have been extinct for 18 million years. Skeptics argued that what people were seeing in Loch Ness were "seiches"--oscillations in the water surface caused by the inflow of cold river water into the slightly warmer loch.

Amateur investigators kept an almost constant vigil, and in the 1960s several British universities launched expeditions to Loch Ness, using sonar to search the deep. Nothing conclusive was found, but in each expedition the sonar operators detected large, moving underwater objects they could not explain. In 1975, Boston's Academy of Applied Science combined sonar and underwater photography in an expedition to Loch Ness. A photo resulted that, after enhancement, appeared to show the giant flipper of a plesiosaur-like creature. Further sonar expeditions in the 1980s and 1990s resulted in more tantalizing, if inconclusive, readings. Revelations in 1994 that the famous 1934 photo was a hoax hardly dampened the enthusiasm of tourists and professional and amateur investigators to the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed a Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Planner for 2008 that includes marketing ideas and earned media tools that you can use to support your Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month initiatives. The materials all carry the tagline, "Share the Road with Motorcycles" to remind drivers to be cognizant of motorcycle riders at all times including the busier riding season. This tagline is similar to that being used in many states and carries with it a recognizable message. The planner also includes information to remind motorcyclists that they must always follow the rules of the road, be alert to other drivers, and should always wear protective gear. The 2008 Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Planner can be found on NHTSA’s Web site.. To get to this information on the Web site, go to www.nhtsa.dot.gov and click on the “Traffic Safety” link on the solid blue bar at the top of NHTSA’s home page. Then click on the “Share the Road” logo in the upper right box that says, “Share the Road 2008 Motorcycle Safety Month Planner,” and the planner will appear on the next page. Visit the site today and do your share to help increase awareness of motorcycles on our roads!

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
