Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He or she could be a person who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. I am from out of town looking to move to the Stonelake Estates subdivision. I was wondering when the proposed park there was going to be built and what it will be like.

A. Your timing on asking about this park comes at a great time. We actually just went before the City Council this past month and received approval to enter into an agreement with a landscape architect to perform the master planning of this park.

The timing of this master planning will occur over the next 4-5 months and will include public meetings with local residents to provide input on potential elements that will be incorporated into the development of this park. Ultimately, the proposed master plan for the park will be approved by the Parks and Recreation Board and subsequently the City Council for final approval.

As far as development of this neighborhood park, we currently have funding in place for this to occur in 2008 with completion of this development likely late that same year.

This Day in History – April 26, 1986: Nuclear Disaster at Chernobyl:

From the History Channel…

On April 26, 1986, the world's worst nuclear power plant accident
occurs at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in the Soviet Union.
Thirty-two people died and dozens more suffered radiation burns in the
opening days of the crisis, but only after Swedish authorities
reported the fallout did Soviet authorities reluctantly admit that an
accident had occurred.

The Chernobyl station was situated at the settlement of Pripyat, about
65 miles north of Kiev in the Ukraine. Built in the late 1970s on the
banks of the Pripyat River, Chernobyl had four reactors, each capable
of producing 1,000 megawatts of electric power. On the evening of
April 25, 1986, a group of engineers began an electrical-engineering
experiment on the Number 4 reactor. The engineers, who had little
knowledge of reactor physics, wanted to see if the reactor's turbine
could run emergency water pumps on inertial power.

As part of their poorly designed experiment, the engineers
disconnected the reactor's emergency safety systems and its
power-regulating system. Next, they compounded this recklessness with
a series of mistakes: They ran the reactor at a power level so low
that the reaction became unstable, and then removed too many of the
reactor's control rods in an attempt to power it up again. The
reactor's output rose to more than 200 megawatts but was proving
increasingly difficult to control. Nevertheless, at 1:23 a.m. on April
26, the engineers continued with their experiment and shut down the
turbine engine to see if its inertial spinning would power the
reactor's water pumps. In fact, it did not adequately power the water
pumps, and without cooling water the power level in the reactor
surged.

To prevent meltdown, the operators reinserted all the 200-some control
rods into the reactor at once. The control rods were meant to reduce
the reaction but had a design flaw: graphite tips. So, before the
control rod's five meters of absorbent material could penetrate the
core, 200 graphite tips simultaneously entered, thus facilitating the
reaction and causing an explosion that blew off the heavy steel and
concrete lid of the reactor. It was not a nuclear explosion, as
nuclear power plants are incapable of producing such a reaction, but
was chemical, driven by the ignition of gases and steam that were
generated by the runaway reaction. In the explosion and ensuing fire,
more than 50 tons of radioactive material were released into the
atmosphere, where it was carried by air currents.

On April 27, Soviet authorities began an evacuation of the 30,000
inhabitants of Pripyat. A cover-up was attempted, but on April 28
Swedish radiation monitoring stations, more than 800 miles to the
northwest of Chernobyl, reported radiation levels 40 percent higher
than normal. Later that day, the Soviet news agency acknowledged that
a major nuclear accident had occurred at Chernobyl.

In the opening days of the crisis, 32 people died at Chernobyl and
dozens more suffered radiation burns. The radiation that escaped into
the atmosphere, which was several times that produced by the atomic
bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was spread by the wind over
Northern and Eastern Europe, contaminating millions of acres of forest and farmland. An estimated 5,000 Soviet citizens eventually died from cancer and other radiation-induced illnesses caused by their exposure to the Chernobyl radiation, and millions more had their health
adversely affected. In 2000, the last working reactors at Chernobyl
were shut down and the plant was officially closed.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month:

So far this month we have highlighted “Autism”, “Alcohol” and “Mathematics” as April is also Autism Awareness, Alcohol Awareness and Mathematics Awareness Month…

Increasing public awareness of the need to ensure the safety and welfare of children led to the passage of the first Federal child protection legislation, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), in 1974. While CAPTA has been amended many times over the years, most recently by the Keeping Children and Families Safe Act of 2003, the purpose of the original legislation remains intact. Today, the Children's Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the Federal agency charged with supporting States, Tribes, and communities in providing programs and services to protect children and strengthen families.

In the early 1980s, Congress made a further commitment to identifying and implementing solutions to child abuse. Recognizing the alarming rate at which children continued to be abused and neglected and the need for innovative programs to prevent child abuse and assist parents and families affected by maltreatment, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives resolved that the week of June 6-12, 1982, should be designated as the first National Child Abuse Prevention Week. They asked the President to issue a proclamation calling upon Government agencies and the public to observe the week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

The following year, April was proclaimed the first National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Since then, child abuse and neglect awareness activities have been promoted across the country during April of each year. The Office on Child Abuse and Neglect (OCAN) within the Children's Bureau coordinates Child Abuse Prevention Month, providing information and releasing updated national statistics about child abuse and neglect each April.

In 1989, the Blue Ribbon Campaign to Prevent Child Abuse had its early beginnings as a Virginia grandmother's tribute to her grandson who died as a result of abuse. She tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her car as a way to remember him and to alert her community to the tragedy of child abuse. The Blue Ribbon Campaign has since expanded across the country, and many wear blue ribbons each April in memory of those who have died as a result of child abuse. In other communities, special fundraisers are held to support prevention activities and treatment facilities for victims, and candlelight vigils are held as a remembrance. Most recently, the focus has shifted toward a more positive message of celebrating "blue ribbon" individuals, organizations, and communities who have done much to prevent child abuse and neglect.

In Title II of the CAPTA amendments of 1996, the Children's Bureau was charged with identifying a lead agency in each State for Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) grants. These grants support the development, operation, and expansion of initiatives to prevent child abuse and neglect, as well as the coordination of resources and activities to strengthen and support families to reduce the likelihood of child maltreatment. CBCAP grantees within each State often take a leadership role in coordinating special events and preparing materials to support Child Abuse Prevention Month. Regardless of their role, CBCAP grantees are required to report annually on their Child Abuse Prevention Month activities.

In 2003, as part of the 20th anniversary of the original Presidential Proclamation designating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, OCAN recast the National Child Abuse Prevention Initiative as a year-long effort. This initiative was launched at the 14th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, which was devoted to the theme of prevention. A national press conference there was the setting for the release of the publication Emerging Practices in the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.

The expansion of the Child Abuse Prevention Initiative was consistent with priorities of the Administration for Children and Families and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. OCAN and Child Welfare Information Gateway (formerly, the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information) partnered with the broader child abuse prevention community to raise awareness of the issue through a variety of tools, resources, activities, and public awareness events. Many of these materials have been made available in print and on the web to related Federal agencies, organizations, and concerned citizens in communities nationwide.

In 2004, there was emerging consensus among national child abuse prevention organizations and related Federal agencies that building public will for child abuse prevention required engaging the public in efforts to strengthen and support families and enhance parenting skills. Building on this national momentum, OCAN shifted the focus of its child abuse prevention resources to incorporate a family strengthening message promoting parenting and community support. Today, the Child Abuse Prevention Initiative is an opportunity for communities across the country to keep children safe, provide the support families need to stay together, and raise children and youth to be happy, secure, and stable adults.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Depending on exactly where you live, you probably received several inches of rain from that past storm on Tuesday and more is in the forecast. When I was driving around on Tuesday, I noticed a number of sprinkler systems going off. I realize these are set to automatically run on trash days but please, please set these to manual for the time being. With the rain we are getting, there is just no reason to run these each week. Unfortunately water conservation is going to be a way of like in North Texas for the foreseeable future and we all need to be very aware of our actions and what we can each personally do to conserve water.

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 40,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. Spotlight on…Frisco Author Laura Lewis and her book, “52 Ways to a Healthy You”:

This interview was conducted with Laura Lewis, author of “52 Ways to a Healthy You”, change expert and nutritionist.

Laura, tell us what motivated you to write your new book:

You know Matt, it’s been a long road to the “now” for me. Having overcome great adversity in my life along with my passion for health, wellness and the media, everything just came together. My primary motivator to write this book was the desire to inspire others that their lives can be fantastic in spite of roadblocks that inevitably present themselves along the way. Also, being a “master of change” as a close friend of mine refers to me, I know this: it is imperative for one to have the healthiest body and mind as possible in order to really achieve the life of their dreams.  How can one move towards the direction of their greatest dreams if they feel worn out, depressed, unhappy, sick, etc.? People get overwhelmed while in the midst of feeling “bad” and perhaps have the idea there is “no way out”. I have personally “been there, done that!” so I do understand. My new book is a step-by-step guide to implementing positive change in one’s life, one “way” at a time! Repairing the biochemistry is just one aspect of what I cover in the book. Dramatic change in every aspect of one’s life, all at once, is a recipe for failure. Easy does it is my motto…one-way at a time.

Regarding your book “52 Ways to a Healthy You”, can you share your favorite “ways”?

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. But, I must say, I am attracted to the “Cop an Attitude” and “Laugh it Off” chapters. An individual must get to a positive space in order to feel compelled to really make a change in their life. If you are negative, your thoughts, the people you are around, etc., it’s almost impossible to make progress in your life! Also, laughter is important. When you laugh, your stress hormones decrease and endorphins are released! Watching a funny movie, doing things that will make you laugh and smile are really important for men and women! Belly laughter can also be almost as good as a cardio workout! So go on and rent a comedy movie! The goal is to “feel good!” It is so important!

How are you spreading the word about feeling great? Do you offer seminars?

Absolutely! I adore speaking to groups about implementing positive change in their lives, body, mind and more! From a 30-minute presentation to a keynote, I am game to uplift all in the room! I do so by sharing personal stories of overcoming adversity as well as hilarious stories of “being human”. Plus, I present basic concepts and tools that everyone can use in order to go to “their” next level of existence! I receive rave reviews on my seminars and honestly, I believe the reason is due to the fact that after I tell my stories and then share my exuberance for life, people leave feeling inspired and motivated to live the best life they can live. To me, well, it moves my soul to know that I can have such an impact upon others.

How can people get your book?

Go to http://www.lauralewis.com/store. Buy your book today and the first 50 people who order will get a personalized and autographed copy from me! If you go anywhere else besides my site you won’t get it signed. Also, for more information, your newsletter recipients will be able to receive a free full bottle of a really great multi, by Nature Made just by signing up for my e-newsletter and reading the letter sent out in response just by joining! Pretty cool stuff!

I love dining out but would love to expand my horizons and not my “gut”! What are some of your favorite places to eat as a nutritionist?

Frisco is a great place to eat out. I moved here three years ago this summer from McKinney and I have been absolutely thrilled with the choices we have in our fair city! What comes to mind are three places. Best Thai at Frisco Square. I adore their Rad Na. Broad rice noodles with broccoli and tofu. (Also available with chicken or beef.) The staff always knows what I want to order and that makes me feel special. Plus, the ambiance is very “cool”.  Avocado Sushi, at Main and Teel in NW Frisco is also a fav of mine! Great sushi, service and it’s fast! Gotta love that! Last of all I really like Sakura located on the SE corner of Preston and 121!! They have karaoke, great food, service and clientele! Fantastic sushi and great prices. Oh, I have got to mention my sweet tooth. I believe in a once a week treat. Double Dip is the big winner in my book. Frozen custard and toppings…in a really cute place. Hey, feeling “good” is part of my weekly Double Dip visit!

You know I love music so I have got to ask. What kind of music do you like to listen to?

I am so eclectic in my musical tastes. I like to listen to Jack FM most of the time due to its interesting mix of genres. I adore Norah Jones, Sarah MacLaughlin, and also great dance mixes. I also like country artists like Toby Keith, Jo Dee Messina and Keith Urban. The music in my car is whatever my teenager and I can agree upon. And, the music in my iPod is what I want to listen to. It’s normally music that will make me move! My iPod plays an important role in my fitness routine. I danced for years and was even a Kilgore College Rangerette. When music plays, I am moving!

Thanks Laura. Is there anything else you would like to share with readers of this newsletter?

Only that your life is now!  It is important to move forward no matter what. With almost a wild abandon. The important thing is to feel alive! Do what you can to “snap out of it” if you are in a deep funk! Life is now folks. Right now. And it is to be fully lived and enjoyed!  My book serves as a guidebook to getting your body and your mind on the right track to optimum health, wellness and happiness. Special discounts exist for orders of 100 or more.   http://www.lauralewis.com

Tornado Talk…by Junior Sports Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:

In the first two games of their Round 2 playoffs, The Bandits and the Tornado split the games. Friday night a 4-3 win for the Tornado, while Saturday was just the opposite, a 4-3 win for the Bandits. This Tuesday the Bandits had another win but on Wednesday, the Tornado made the series 2-2.

Friday the 20th was a nice overtime win. St. Louis scored first, but in the 2nd period Ben Miller tied it up. St. Louis scored again but this goal was returned by Tom Brooks’ goal. Sadly St. Louis scored about 15 seconds later with an unassisted goal. The Tornado were down 3-2 in the 3rd period, when Colin Long scored a beautiful shorthanded goal. In playoffs, they start another 20 minutes for overtime. So Adam Flink scored the unassisted goal to win the game for the Tornado and lead the series 1-0. Shots on goal were 42-36.

On Saturday they had a 4-3 overtime loss, and the series was now 1-1. And on Tuesday night, it was an upsetting 5-2 loss, making the Bandits 1-8 all time in the playoffs in Frisco.

Down by 1 game in the series, the boys really needed to step it up, which they did with a 7 to 6 win. The Bandits scored the first goal of the night. Stephane Da Costa snagged the next one with Ben Miller assisting him. A minute later Brad McCabe made the score 2-1 for the Tornado. Soon after Tom Brooks made the score 3-1, ending the 1st period.  Stephane Da Costa scored his 2nd goal of the night right before Mike Cfelli put in an unassisted goal. Bandits goalie Pat Nagle was replaced after Da Costa’s goal. Adam Flink made it an even better 2nd period adding a 6th goal for the Tornado. Oh and St. Louis got another goal too. The 3rd period got a little scary though. St. Louis scored a shorthanded goal and then Jake Newton made the score 7-3. In the last half of the period, the Bandits got 3 more goals making it 7-6 giving them a chance to tie it. Thankfully they didn’t and the Tornado came away with a victory. Shots on goal were 36 to 31 and the 3 stars were: Stephane Da Costa, Sean Roadhouse and Pat Maroon (Bandits).

Friday night will be the 5th game of the series in St. Louis which determines who will be in the championship. You can listen to it on www.tornadohockey.com. Have a great weekend!!
