Mayoral Campaign Update –

The storms have really done a job on our signs so if yours has blown away or is damaged, please let us know so we can get you a new one. Also, if you don’t yet have a sign and would like to proudly display a yard sign and your support for the next Mayor of Frisco, please let us know.

Thank you to everybody who has been helping in any way with this campaign. We are so excited about what we plan to accomplish after I get elected as your next Mayor of Frisco and need your continued help in spreading the word and encouraging people to vote starting April 28. More details are where and when can be found in the newsletter.

Mornings with Matt:

“Mornings with Matt” takes places each Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30 at It’s A Grind located at the Shops at Starwood (SW corner of Lebanon and the Dallas North Tollway). Stop by on Wednesdays to talk about issues facing our great city, or really anything for that matter. As an additional note, somebody asked if I will continue doing this after the good citizens of Frisco elect me as their next Mayor. The answer is a big YES as I want to make sure the Office of the Mayor is as open and accessible to the public as possible. I guess we will then change the name to “Mornings with the Mayor”.

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. Are there any plans to add more tornado sirens near the Panther Creek Estates community? The community is at Eldorado and Hillcrest.

When the siren goes off it's hard to hear. Also when someone talks thru the siren speakers we can not understand what is being said.

A. Through our community education programs, we work to educate Frisco Citizens about severe weather and the means to keep their families safe during these events. There are multiple means of notification used to inform the public during forecast periods, all of which we hope keep our Citizens aware of potentially dangerous weather.

The initial means of notification is through the local media and the National Weather Service as they forecast the potential for severe weather and issue Severe Weather Watches. These include the news weather forecasts, the scrolling bars along the bottom of your favorite TV show or the small maps that most TV stations have started to display during severe weather. These are all methods the National Weather Service uses to keep the public as informed as possible to severe weather.

Another method of notification is through a NOAA weather radio. These radios are available at electronics outlets and are capable of being programmed to only activate for a particular county. I strongly recommend that each household and business in Frisco own and maintain one of these radios as they are one of the best methods for being notified directly from the National Weather Service. These radios also have the added benefit of silently monitoring NWS radio until your geographic area is affected and then an alarm is sounded to notify you of the conditions. It works like an alarm clock for severe weather.

The last line of defense and specifically for persons outdoors and away from any media source and/or shelter, are the Outdoor Warning Sirens. These sirens are specifically designed to notify people who are not inside of any type of structure to seek shelter immediately. The single most important feature of the sirens is the tone generated to notify anyone outside that they need to seek shelter and turn on a radio or television to get more information. The voice capability on the sirens is simply another means for us to get information out quickly, however the “voice over siren” is not a method that is extremely effective nor do we rely upon the siren “voice” to transmit single-source information. Our intent is that anyone outside will hear the siren, wonder what is going on and go inside to turn on the TV or radio to investigate further.

As Frisco has continued to grow, new sirens have been purchased and installed to increase the coverage areas. As that growth continues, we are adding more sirens. Currently there are two sirens in your area, one on Eldorado Parkway between Preston Road and Hillcrest Road and a second siren at Roach Middle School.

With this awareness, we are hopeful that our Citizens will be proactive in their own protection. I would encourage anyone who would like to learn more about the Frisco Fire Department to consider attending our Citizen’s Fire Academy program or the Community Emergency Response Team training.

This Day in History – April 17, 1970: Apollo 13 Returns to Earth

From the History Channel…

With the world anxiously watching, Apollo 13, a U.S. lunar spacecraft
that suffered a severe malfunction on its journey to the moon, safely returns to Earth.

On April 11, the third manned lunar landing mission was launched from
Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying astronauts James A. Lovell, John L.
Swigert, and Fred W. Haise. The mission was headed for a landing on
the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon. However, two days into the mission, disaster struck 200,000 miles from Earth when oxygen tank No. 2 blew up in the spacecraft. Mission commander Lovell reported to mission control on Earth: "Houston, we've had a problem here," and it was discovered that the normal supply of oxygen, electricity, light, and water had been disrupted. The landing mission was aborted, and the astronauts and controllers on Earth scrambled to come up with
emergency procedures. The crippled spacecraft continued to the moon,
circled it, and began a long, cold journey back to Earth.

The astronauts and mission control were faced with enormous logistical
problems in stabilizing the spacecraft and its air supply, as well as
providing enough energy to the damaged fuel cells to allow successful
reentry into Earth's atmosphere. Navigation was another problem, and
Apollo 13's course was repeatedly corrected with dramatic and untested
maneuvers. On April 17, tragedy turned to triumph as the Apollo 13
astronauts touched down safely in the Pacific Ocean.

April is Rosacea Awareness Month:

So far this month we have covered Mathematics Awareness and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Awareness Month…

Although surveys have found rosacea can inflict significant damage to quality of life and emotional well-being as it becomes increasingly severe, medical help is available to control or prevent its potentially devastating effects on facial appearance. The National Rosacea Society (NRS) has designated April as Rosacea Awareness Month to alert the public to the warning signs of this chronic and conspicuous disorder of the facial skin, now estimated to affect more than 14 million Americans.

"Although many may assume it's just a sunburn or a temporary case of acne, through greater public awareness more people will seek early diagnosis and appropriate therapy before their rosacea becomes a serious intrusion on their emotional, social and professional lives," said Dr. John Wolf, chairman of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine.

While rosacea varies from one patient to another, its primary signs may include flushing or transient erythema (redness), persistent erythema, papules (bumps) and pustules (pimples), and telangiectasia (visible blood vessels), according to the NRS standard classification of rosacea, developed by a consensus committee and review panel of 17 experts worldwide. Secondary features may include burning or stinging, plaques (raised patches on the skin), a dry appearance, edema (swelling), ocular manifestations and phymatous changes, in which the skin thickens.

The standard subtypes of rosacea reflect the most common patterns of signs and symptoms, and patients may have characteristics of more than one subtype at the same time. Subtype 1 (erythematotelangiectatic) rosacea is characterized by flushing and persistent redness on the central portion of the face, while subtype 2 (papulopustular) rosacea also features transient papules. Subtype 3 (phymatous) rosacea includes thickening of the skin, irregular nodularities and enlargement, especially of the nose.

Subtype 4 is ocular rosacea, where the eyes may have a watery or bloodshot appearance, the sensation of a foreign body, burning or stinging, dryness, itching, light sensitivity or a host of other signs and symptoms. Styes are a common sign of rosacea-related eye disease, and in severe cases vision may be reduced due to corneal complications.

In an NRS survey of 603 patients, 76 percent said rosacea's effect on their personal appearance had lowered their self-confidence and self-esteem, and nearly half said it had diminished their outlook on life. Moreover, for those who described their condition as severe, 94 percent said it had damaged their self-confidence and 77 percent said their rosacea had negatively affected their outlook. Nearly 40 percent said they had canceled business meetings or social engagements because of rosacea's effect on their appearance, and nearly 30 percent had even missed work because of their condition.

The good news is that 80 percent of the survey respondents reported that effective medical therapy had also improved their emotional well-being.

During Rosacea Awareness Month, extensive public education activities will be conducted by the NRS to increase awareness and understanding of this widespread disorder, emphasizing its warning signs and urging those who suspect they may have the condition to see a dermatologist or other physician. In addition, bulk quantities of NRS educational materials are available to health professionals for their patients.

Visit the National Rosacea web site for more information.

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
