The YMCA held a groundbreaking event recently for their new facility near the intersection of Teel Parkway and Main Street. As a person that supports our community at every opportunity, I was proud to be part of the ceremony and would like to congratulate everybody involved. I know it is a small photo but I am the second person from the right.

Mayoral Campaign Update – Debates and Signs:

We have had two debates so far and the consensus and exit polls show that we have come away victorious! We have picked up additional support at each event as they have been fun and enlightening and have really helped us to get our message out to the community. This election is all about unity and the people of Frisco.  I am confident the people of Frisco know who the best choice for Mayor will be, and will vote accordingly. I am passionate about the future of this city, and as many of you have experienced over the years, am approachable and authentic. As always, my cell is always available to anyone (214 336 3355) and I work diligently to answer emails as quickly as I can.

The storms have really done a job on our signs so if yours has blown away or is damaged, please let us know so we can get you a new one. Also, if you don’t yet have a sign and would like to proudly display a yard sign and your support for the next Mayor of Frisco, please let us know.

Thank you to everybody who has been helping in any way with this campaign. We are so excited about what we plan to accomplish after I get elected as the next Mayor of Frisco and need your continued help in spreading the word and encouraging people to vote starting April 28.

Mornings with Matt:

“Mornings with Matt” takes places each Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30 at It’s A Grind located at the Shops at Starwood (SW corner of Lebanon and the Dallas North Tollway). Stop by on Wednesdays to talk about issues facing our great city, or really anything for that matter. As an additional note, somebody asked if I will continue doing this after the good citizens of Frisco elect me as their next Mayor. The answer is a big YES as I want to make sure the Office of the Mayor is as open and accessible to the public as possible. I guess we will then change the name to “Mornings with the Mayor”.

This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. There are so many amazing things in this newsletter, as there are every week. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.  Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this list as a more informed society is a more functional society.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. City of Frisco ordinance provides for an "On-street parking permit" to park an RV on a city street up to 48 hours prior to, and up to 24 hours after, any trip.

Here is the definition: "On-street parking permit means written governmental permission authorized by the chief of police of the city or appointed designee (the "chief of police") empowering the holder thereof to park or store a recreational vehicle on a public street within a residential zoning district for a temporary period of time not to exceed 48 hours prior to a trip or 24 hours following a trip. Said permit shall identify the owner or operator of such vehicle, nearest street address or precise description of location where vehicle is to be parked or stored, the date the permit is issued, date of expiration, and any other information, conditions or special restrictions deemed necessary by the chief of police or at the time of issuance.(Sec 90-148)

If I secure such a permit, but my HOA restrictions prohibit parking or storing an RV within the HOA, which one controls?

A. A permit providing a temporary allowance to park an RV in a residential area only applies to the city ordinance restrictions. Any restricting HOA covenants would still apply and having the permit would not prevent an HOA from taking action under their provisions. The HOA restrictions are not enforced by the police department.

This Day in History – April 10, 1866: ASPCA is founded

From the History Channel…

On April 10, 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals (ASPCA) is founded in New York City by philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh, 54.


In 1863, Bergh had been appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to a diplomatic post at the Russian court of Czar Alexander II. It was there that he was horrified to witness work horses beaten by their peasant drivers. En route back to America, a June 1865 visit to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in London awakened his determination to secure a charter not only to incorporate the ASPCA but to exercise the power to arrest and prosecute violators of the law.


Back in New York, Bergh pleaded on behalf of "these mute servants of
mankind" at a February 8, 1866, meeting at Clinton Hall. He argued
that protecting animals was an issue that crossed party lines and class boundaries. "This is a matter purely of conscience; it has no perplexing side issues," he said. "It is a moral question in all its aspects." The speech prompted a number of dignitaries to sign his "Declaration of the Rights of Animals."

Bergh's impassioned accounts of the horrors inflicted on animals convinced the New York State legislature to pass the charter incorporating the ASPCA on April 10, 1866. Nine days later, the first effective anti-cruelty law in the United States was passed, allowing the ASPCA to investigate complaints of animal cruelty and to make arrests.

Bergh was a hands-on reformer, becoming a familiar sight on the streets and in the courtrooms of New York. He regularly inspected slaughter houses, worked with police to close down dog- and rat-fighting pits and lectured in schools and to adult societies. In 1867, the ASPCA established and operated the nation's first ambulance for horses.

As the pioneer and innovator of the humane movement, the ASPCA quickly became the model for more than 25 other humane organizations in the United States and Canada. And by the time Bergh died in 1888, 37 of the 38 states in the Union had passed anti-cruelty laws.

Bergh's dramatic street rescues of mistreated horses and livestock served as a model for those trying to protect abused children. After Mary Ellen McCormack, 9, was found tied to a bed and brutally beaten by her foster parents in 1874, activists founded the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Bergh served as one of the group's first vice presidents.

If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you are not alone – IBS is common with worldwide prevalence estimated at 9% to 23%. Although the condition is associated with heavy economic and social burdens, many people remain undiagnosed and unaware that their symptoms indicate a medically recognized disorder.

In an effort to bring attention to the symptoms and difficulties associated with irritable bowel syndrome, IFFGD has designated April as IBS Awareness Month. Beginning with the first IBS Awareness Month in April 1997, and every subsequent year, we work to focus attention on important health messages about IBS diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life issues.

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

Erika and Matt Lafata are a great team and enjoy a great marriage and life partnership. Together they try to do everything they can to give back to the community. They are involved in so many things together and in fact, they have even been referred to as “The Dynamic Duo” by a fellow Frisco City Council member!

About Matt Lafata:

Matt Lafata and his wife Erika share six children between the two of them. In January 1999, Mr. Lafata moved to Frisco from Gloucester, MA. Mr. Lafata has helped build several highly successful businesses for more than 20 years. A long-time business consultant, entrepreneur and human resources professional, he is the Director of Business Development with the Frisco-based HR strategy and technology consulting firm HRchitect (www.HRchitect.com). He is also the founder of several marketing and public relations agencies including The Matt Lafata Marketing Group (www.mattlafatamarketing.com). Previously, Mr. Lafata was an Executive Vice President of a computer software company where he was responsible for corporate development, marketing, sales, product development and more. Mr. Lafata studied finance and business management at Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts.
