Mayoral Campaign Update - Signs!!!

Thank you to everybody who has been helping in any way with this campaign. We are so excited about what we plan to accomplish after I get elected as the next Mayor of Frisco and need your continued help in spreading the word and encouraging people to vote starting April 28. More information will follow on that but for the time being, signs are now available and if you would like to proudly display a yard sign for the next Mayor of Frisco, please let us know. Also, thank you to those who attended the mayoral debate that was hosted by Frisco Style this evening. It was a great event, extremely well done, and we were very pleased with the outcome.

Mornings with Matt:

I’m always looking for more ways to communicate and reach out to citizens. “Mornings with Matt” takes places each Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30 at It’s A Grind located at the Shops at Starwood (SW corner of Lebanon and the Dallas North Tollway). The owner, Marchand Froschheuser, is a Frisco resident and dear friend and I hope you will support her business any chance you get and stop by on Wednesdays to talk about issues facing our great city, or really anything for that matter. As an additional note, somebody asked if I will continue doing this after the good citizens of Frisco elect me as their next Mayor. The answer is a big YES as I want to make sure the Office of the Mayor is as open and accessible to the public as possible. I guess we will then change the name to “Mornings with the Mayor”.

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. I live near 423 and Eldorado and notice the nice lighted street signs at the traffic lights just west on the Little Elm side all the time. I was driving down the southbound access road of the Tollway today and noticed some of those signs being installed in Frisco now. Are there plans to roll more of these out or is it very limited use? They look REALLY nice and add to the appeal of Frisco I think.

A. We have had several of these signs installed since about 2003. Frisco currently has 99 signs installed at 30 of our 75 signalized intersections. Our recent shipment includes another 8 signs that will be installed at 2 more intersections.

We are unable to install these signs at spanwire signals (wood poles) and at intersections along TxDOT roadways. Our next round of orders will includes additional signs for the intersections along Dallas Parkway.

Once our signs are approved for TxDOT roadways, you will see more of these signs along Preston and other state routes.

This Day in History – April 3, 1860: Pony Express Debuts

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1860, the first Pony Express mail, traveling by horse
and rider relay teams, simultaneously leaves St. Joseph, Missouri, and
Sacramento, California. Ten days later, on April 13, the westbound rider and mail packet completed the approximately 1,800-mile journey
and arrived in Sacramento, beating the eastbound packet's arrival in St. Joseph by two days and setting a new standard for speedy mail delivery. Although ultimately short-lived and unprofitable, the Pony Express captivated America's imagination and helped win federal aid for a more economical overland postal system. It also contributed to the economy of the towns on its route and served the mail-service needs of the American West in the days before the telegraph or an
efficient transcontinental railroad.

The Pony Express debuted at a time before radios and telephones, when
California, which achieved statehood in 1850, was still largely cut off from the eastern part of the country. Letters sent from New York to the West Coast traveled by ship, which typically took at least a month, or by stagecoach on the recently established Butterfield
Express overland route, which could take from three weeks to many
months to arrive. Compared to the snail's pace of the existing delivery methods, the Pony Express' average delivery time of 10 days seemed like lightning speed.

The Pony Express Company, the brainchild of William H. Russell,
William Bradford Waddell and Alexander Majors, owners of a freight
business, was set up over 150 relay stations along a pioneer trail across the present-day states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. Riders, who were paid approximately $25 per week and carried loads estimated at up to 20
pounds of mail, were changed every 75 to 100 miles, with horses switched out every 10 to 15 miles. Among the riders was the legendary frontiersman and showman William "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917), who reportedly signed on with the Pony Express at age 14. The company's riders set their fastest time with Lincoln's inaugural address, which
was delivered in just less than eight days.

The initial cost of Pony Express delivery was $5 for every half-ounce of mail. The company began as a private enterprise and its owners hoped to gain a profitable delivery contract from the U.S. government, but that never happened. With the advent of the first transcontinental telegraph line in October 1861, the Pony Express ceased operations. However, the legend of the lone Pony Express rider galloping across the Old West frontier to deliver the mail lives on today.

April is Mathematics Awareness Month:

Mathematics Awareness Month, held each year in April, was created to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics. It began in 1986, when President Reagan issued a proclamation establishing National Mathematics Awareness Week. Activities for Mathematics Awareness Month generally are organized on local, state and regional levels by college and university departments, institutional public information offices, student groups, and related associations and interest groups.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
