Along with my daughter Kaleigh, we posed with two of the three Hanson brothers at this past weekend’s Pros vs. Prospects III game. The Hanson’s (from the movie Slapshot) added some great entertainment to this year’s event and I hope you were able to catch this special event that took place right here in Frisco.
This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. There are so many amazing things in this newsletter, as there are every week. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips. Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this list as a more informed society is a more functional society.
If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than thirty-five thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send me an email so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.
If you received this from somebody else and would like to be added to the list, just send me an email. Your email address will never be sold or given to anybody else for any reason. All newsletters can also be found on our web site at www.mattlafatamarketing.com.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He or she could be a person who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.
March Citizen of the Month
The March citizen of the month goes to…Rosemarie Odom, United States Marshall – Justice Department!!! Resident Glenn Kopanski, who is retired from the United States Navy, submitted Rosemarie and she was chosen the winner. I interviewed Glenn about Rosemarie and why she is so deserving of this recognition.
Glenn, tell everybody about Rosemarie Odom
Matt, I have known Rosemarie for three years and since knowing her my life has changed, from being alone in Lewisville to moving to Frisco in 2004 buying a home in the Trails of West Frisco and being involved in so many things that are important in our Community. I being an Aid's Patient know of this woman's desire to help others in the same condition as I am in. She sacrifices most of her off time to so many different issues concerning this Virus. She served on the Board of Directors at Aids Services of North Texas/Denton for many years, since resigning she has focused on assisting and being on the Board of Directors at the Resource Center Dallas a Non-Profit to those with Aid's in Dallas County. She is part of the main structure of World Aid's Day bringing remembrance for those who have perished with Aid's since the beginning. She attends just about every function that brings funding to several of these Non-Profits. She spends time in the Hospitals with dying Patients and just has a heart of Gold. I myself know first hand the love that comes from her heart and I am so very honored to be her friend for life, something I lacked before meeting her, dealing with my own discriminations having the Virus.
Rosemarie has also assisting me in speaking to our kids in Frisco Schools since October. She has served the U.S. Marshall Service for 35 years and it going to retire at the end of March. Her husband Tony Odom was a Chief Marshall retiring several years ago, and still working in our Prison Systems. They both should be admired as people of the month, they sacrifice much of their off time together to assist in this mission.
So, I feel they should be commended when no one else will do so. I love the both of them for what they do and for what they are, if we had more like them in our world, imagine how wonderful place this would be to live in. I being United States Navy Retired can relate to them as we are all Government, but the one thing we share alike with each other is our passion to make a difference in our Community.
I thank you for reading this and I am hoping sincerely they are recognized for the work they do, not only for our Government and Nation but for their compassion to help others.
Congratulations Rosemarie! You certainly are an amazing person and I feel privileged to know you.
“Dear Neighbor” Column:
Hi Neighbors, in attempt to assist The City of Frisco Residents with their Spring Projects this newsletter would like to start a ‘Dear Neighbor’ column for questions and inquiries about home improvements. Such improvements might include questions regarding accessory buildings, sheds, patio covers, gazebos, fences (new or replacements) foundation repairs, re-roofing projects, arbors, room additions or alterations, tall grass, trash, outdoor kitchens, fire-pits, spas and pools.
It would be something similar to the famous ‘Dear Abby’ or ‘Heloise’ column, where readers submit their questions or concerns and the response is printed in this newsletter. This newsletters’ reader’s, as the citizens of Frisco, will be able to ask for information in regards to home improvements, general building practices and property nuisances.
So, if you have questions or home improvements, general building practices property nuisances or any newsworthy items you would like to ask and have shared with all our readers, please send them to me at community@mattlafatamarketing.com so I may include them.
Wine Question of the Week:
Since we enjoy a glass of wine from time to time, we have become more fascinated with wine in general and in trying to learn more about wine. This week’s question…
Q. What is that dent in the bottom of a bottle of wine?
A. The dent on the bottom of a wine bottle is called a punt. It is found on the bottom of Champagne/sparkling wine bottles and some still wine bottles. The main purpose of the rounded bottom or punt is to strengthen the bottle--especially important for sparkling wines--but punts also can be useful for collecting sediment and for pouring wine (it provides a place to put your thumb).
Deep Thoughts from The Boss
Since I am a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen, and he is such a profound and prolific songwriter, I’ve decided to include some of my favorite lines from his vast collection of music.
“…And in your love I’m born again” – from Leap of Faith off the Lucky Town album

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Dear Friends,
This week’s newsletter is proudly sponsored by The Embassy Suites Frisco and their incredible Champagne Easter Brunch. The Embassy does a fantastic job with their holiday brunches and I am sure this will be no different. Make reservations early before they sell out! Also check out the spotlight on Leadership Frisco Class X and their Project for The Boys and Girls Club of Collin County. Leadership Frisco is a great program that takes place annually and each class comes up with a special project to support the community. Read about their project and how you can assist. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.
Driving or walking around our neighborhoods, I continue to see too many people driving too fast. Please slow down when driving through our neighborhoods. You already have enough distractions going on and it only takes a second for a child to run out into the street and the faster you are going, the harder it will be to avoid an unfortunate situation. You could affect another family’s life forever, as well as your own, should an accident take place because you were going too fast. Please just slow down. We all have things to do and places to get to but nothing is worth the price of a serious accident or even a death. Adding to this danger is the amount of cars parking on our streets. Please park in your garage or driveway wherever possible as it also helps our neighborhoods look better.
If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 38,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.

Spotlight on…Leadership Frisco Class X and their Project for The Boys and Girls Club of Collin County – Frisco Branch Needs a 29-Passenger Bus:Among the hustle and bustle of Frisco today, you can’t help but notice thousands of children scurrying around our parks, schools, and shopping centers. The Frisco Independent School District, the single largest employer in the city, will cater to 24,000 students this spring.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County (BGCCC) – Frisco Branch reaches out to hundreds of children every day. Core programs in Character and Leadership Development, Education, Health, Sports, and the Arts help children develop to their full potential.
Many single-parent families and families where both parents are working cannot care for their children after school or during the summer. More than 55 percent of the children at most Clubs come from families earning less than $25,000 a year. With an annual cost of $500 to serve each child, BGCCC depends heavily on corporate and community support for program activities.
Leadership Frisco Class X, a volunteer program sponsored by the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, wants to purchase a new, 29-passenger bus for the BGCCC.
“Our vans are old and we are in dire need of getting them replaced,” said Christina Alford, Chief Executive Officer of the BGCCC. “Transportation is a critical part of our business and serving Frisco’s children while keeping them safe is our number one priority.”
The bus costs $43,959 and Leadership Frisco hopes to raise $60,000 where the remaining $16,041 will go toward a new computer lab for the BGCCC.
Please make your tax-deductible donation payable to The Boys and Girls Club of Collin County, and mark it “Bus.” Mail your donation by April 1, 2007 to Leadership Frisco Class X at the Frisco Chamber of Commerce, 6843 Main St., Frisco, TX 75034. For more information, call the Boys and Girls Club of Collin County at 214-544-8924 or visit www.bgccc.org.
Mrs. Texas United States® Pageant – Be a Part of It:
The Mrs. Texas United States Pageant is the premiere competition for married women. The state contest has called Frisco home for the last three years, with this year’s competition May 11-13 at the host hotel Westin Stonebriar Resort. A souvenir program book, with a long shelf life, is produced each year. Ads and event sponsorships for activities during the pageant weekend are available, tailored to your business’ needs. Contact the pageant office at info@mrstexasunitedstates.com or Marketing Consultant Tina Grimes at tina.grimes@yahoo.com or 214.228.4401 for advertising and sponsorship information.
Additionally, entries are still being accepted until April 15th. If you want to have a fun, girls’ weekend meeting new friends, consider entering the competition. Contestants must be married, living in Texas, and children are not a factor. Our winners have been all over the age and lifestyle spectrum; we’ve had stay-at-home moms win, as well as those with full-time jobs outside the home. No experience is necessary, and there is no talent competition. Most of the women who enter a pageant for married women have never done so previously. The new Mrs. Texas competes at the televised Mrs. United States Pageant in Las Vegas this summer. Limited local titles are available. Visit www.mrstexasunitedstates.com for more information. Tornado Talk…by Junior Sports Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:
This past weekend was not one of the best for the Tornado. They got swept by the St. Louis Bandits and now it is impossible for the Tornado to win the division title making this the first time in 8 seasons. They also only have 34 wins which means they can’t reach the 40 win mark. Two of the greatest streaks in junior hockey have ended.
Thursday night was started off well, as they had a 1-0 lead thanks to Stephane Da Costa. Sadly, it didn’t end the same way. The final score was 3-1 and the Tornado had to face the reality that they couldn’t get 40 wins to keep the streak going. Friday was even worse, to put it nicely. 7-3 was the final score, with goals from Nielsson Arcibal, Adam Flink and Ben Miller.
The 3rd annual Pros vs. Prospects game was definitely not a disappointment, with the likes of Mark Messier, The Hanson Brothers, Al Secord and former Tornado players. The hilarious Hanson Brothers started off the game by taking out the goalie and scoring, as well as landing in the penalty box the entire first period leading up to a game ejection. With the ejections, the pros were struggling a bit so Coach Curtale gave them some fresh blood by trading Lyon Messier, John Bullis, Stephane Da Costa and Dan Siira over to them. The Tornado scored 5 nice goals against former Tornado goalie Scott Talbot. And the pros also scored five. You know what that means?? Shoot out!! Lyon Messier scored for the Pros to win the game 6-5 and Tornado goalie Thomas Tragust stopped Mark Messier’s shot and did a little victory dance. It was a great night for charity in front of a sold out crowd.
The Tornado have a home game on Friday against the Wichita Falls Wildcats. Only 3 home games are left in the season so be sure you make it to a few!! Have a great weekend!
