My daughter and I visited a reception for U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson last week. Sam is a true American hero and we appreciated him taking the time for a picture with us. Congratulations to Sam for winning his race this past Tuesday.

Mornings with Matt:

I’m always looking for more ways to communicate and reach out to citizens and an idea that I have had for a long time is to pick a day each week where I hang out at a local coffee house and just have an open forum with anybody who wants to come by. We do this each Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30 at It’s A Grind located at the Shops at Starwood (SW corner of Lebanon and the Dallas North Tollway). The owner, Marchand Froschheuser, is a Frisco resident and dear friend and I hope you will support her business any chance you get and stop by on Wednesdays to talk about issues facing our great city, or really anything for that matter.

This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. There are so many amazing things in this newsletter, as there are every week. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.  Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this list as a more informed society is a more functional society.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. I have a few questions about what exactly some of the various traffic monitoring/sensing devices around Frisco do. Specifically, I am interested in what these devices are and what they do:

1) The cameras mounted on white poles above traffic signals;

2) The small black devices sitting next to these cameras, sitting directly on the horizontal traffic signal support beam and aim at oncoming traffic;

3) The small white lights that turn on during a red light and back off during a green light (sometimes enclosed in a small cage), affixed to the top of the vertical beam of a traffic signal pole directly under where the horizontal and vertical beams meet.

A. 1) The cameras on white poles are the signal actuator cameras. They detect traffic much the same as the magentic loops in the pavement. They control the cycling of the traffic light.
2) Those small black devices are Opticom sensors. Special lights mounted on ambulances and fire trucks flash and those black devices receive the flash and change the light green for the emergency vehicles.
3) Those small white lights are downstream lights that allow a police officer to monitor red light runners from the downstream side of the signal, so as not to have to run through the red light to stop a violator. They only come on when the red light on that arm is on.

This Day in History – March 6, 1899: Bayer Patents Aspirin

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co.

Now the most common drug in household medicine cabinets, acetylsalicylic acid was originally made from a chemical found in the bark of willow trees. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine, beginning in ancient Greece when Hippocrates used it to relieve pain and fever. Known to
doctors since the mid-19thcentury, it was used sparingly due to its unpleasant taste and tendency to damage the stomach.

In 1897, Bayer employee Felix Hoffman found a way to create a stable form of the drug that was easier and more pleasant to take. (Some
evidence shows that Hoffman's work was really done by a Jewish chemist, Arthur Eichengrun, whose contributions were covered up during the Nazi era.) After obtaining the patent rights, Bayer began distributing aspirin in powder form to physicians to give to their patients one gram at a time. The brand name came from "a" for acetyl, "spir" from the spirea plant (a source of salicin) and the suffix "in," commonly used for medications. It quickly became the number-one drug worldwide.

Aspirin was made available in tablet form and without a prescription in 1915. Two years later, when Bayer's patent expired during the First World War, the company lost the trademark rights to aspirin in various countries. After the United States entered the war against Germany in April 1917, the Alien Property Custodian, a government agency that administers foreign property, seized Bayer's U.S. assets. Two years later, the Bayer company name and trademarks for the United States and Canada were auctioned off and purchased by Sterling Products Company, later Sterling Winthrop, for $5.3 million.

Bayer became part of IG Farben, the conglomerate of German chemical
industries that formed the financial heart of the Nazi regime. After World War II, the Allies split apart IG Farben, and Bayer again emerged as an individual company. Its purchase of Miles Laboratories in 1978 gave it a product line including Alka-Seltzer and Flintstones and One-A-Day Vitamins. In 1994, Bayer bought Sterling Winthrop's
over-the-counter business, gaining back rights to the Bayer name and
logo and allowing the company once again to profit from American sales
of its most famous product.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month:

March has been designated as Brain Injury Awareness Month, a critical time when the Brain Injury Association of America and its partners strive to build public awareness and education by producing and distributing important education and prevention tools. Only by raising public awareness of the "silent epidemic" of brain injury will we begin to see a decrease in the alarming number of injuries sustained every year, an increase in the number of individuals practicing preventive behaviors while at work or play, and a change in the public's attitude toward individuals with brain injury.

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

Erika and Matt Lafata are a great team and enjoy a great marriage and life partnership. Together they try to do everything they can to give back to the community. They are involved in so many things together and in fact, they have even been referred to as “The Dynamic Duo” by a fellow Frisco City Council member!

About Matt Lafata:

Matt Lafata and his wife Erika share six children between the two of them. In January 1999, Mr. Lafata moved to Frisco from Gloucester, MA. Mr. Lafata has helped build several highly successful businesses for more than 20 years. A long-time business consultant, entrepreneur and human resources professional, he is the Director of Business Development with the Frisco-based HR strategy and technology consulting firm HRchitect (www.HRchitect.com). He is also the founder of several marketing and public relations agencies including The Matt Lafata Marketing Group (www.mattlafatamarketing.com). Previously, Mr. Lafata was an Executive Vice President of a computer software company where he was responsible for corporate development, marketing, sales, product development and more. Mr. Lafata studied finance and business management at Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts.
