Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details
Meadow Hill Estates was the February winner of Neighborhood of the Month. Their picture and story was published in the February 15, 2007 issue.
If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate for March, please send it to me by the end of February…
The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He or she could be a person who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.
The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.
Please send an email to community@mattlafatamarketing.com to nominate and explain why a Frisco citizen or a neighborhood should be honored with this monthly recognition.
“Dear Neighbor” Column:
Hi Neighbors, in attempt to assist The City of Frisco Residents with their Spring Projects this newsletter would like to start a ‘Dear Neighbor’ column for questions and inquiries about home improvements. Such improvements might include questions regarding accessory buildings, sheds, patio covers, gazebos, fences (new or replacements) foundation repairs, re-roofing projects, arbors, room additions or alterations, tall grass, trash, outdoor kitchens, fire-pits, spas and pools.
It would be something similar to the famous ‘Dear Abby’ or ‘Heloise’ column, where readers submit their questions or concerns and the response is printed in this newsletter. This newsletters’ reader’s, as the citizens of Frisco, will be able to ask for information in regards to home improvements, general building practices and property nuisances.
So, if you have questions or home improvements, general building practices property nuisances or any newsworthy items you would like to ask and have shared with all our readers, please send them to me at community@mattlafatamarketing.com so I may include them.
Question of the Week:
Q. Do I need a permit for a fence and how tall can it be? A. Permits are required on all fences built, except when repairing or replacing a portion of the fence -- limited to two (2) sections or sixteen (16) feet. Fences may be built up to eight (8) feet in height from grade on the rear and side yards of the main structure. Fences in the front of the main structure may be built four (4') feet in height and all vision clips must be observed. In no case shall a fence or portion thereof extend past any property line.
Wine Question of the Day:
Since we enjoy a glass of wine from time to time, we have become more fascinated with wine in general and in trying to learn more about wine. This week’s question…
Q. Should I let wine breathe after it’s been opened?
A. This is a much debated issue. Many
believe that few wines greatly benefit from “breathing” (i.e., opening
the bottle of wine and letting it stand a while before being drunk)
because the wine’s surface area exposed to air is minimal. But many
believe that few wines will be hurt by giving it a chance to breathe.
How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:
With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.
While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.
Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.
To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.
If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.
Just a reminder - this newsletter is put together with information from many different sources. You can also view this newsletter and past newsletters in the News section of my web site at www.mattlafatamarketing.com. If you do not receive your emailed newsletter for some reason, please visit www.mattlafatamarketing.com each week as some mail servers block emails that are sent to multiple recipients. Just remember that if you don’t get it by each Friday, you can read it on the web site.

Happy Chinese New Year!
The Chinese New Year holiday took place on February 18.
Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.
New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors. The sacrifice to the ancestors, the most vital of all the rituals, united the living members with those who had passed away. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family.
Year 2007 is the Year of the Pig by the Chinese calendar.
Happy Mardi Gras – February 20
Mardi Gras, the French for 'fat Tuesday', has got quite a few names. While the English used to call it Shrove Tuesday, or, later as Pancake Day, to the Germans it is Fastnachtkuchen, or, just Fastnacht. Yet, irrespective of this name game, Mardi Gras - or at least its counterparts under different names, is no newcomer in the history of humanity. Take, for instance, the Carnival. This can be regarded as the mother of Mardi Gras traditions, with the origin embedded in ancient Rome. However, around the middle of the second century traditions of the Carnival became popular as a way to feast and act wild before the somber days of Lent. This is still celebrated as a splendid festival across South America and in the Catholic countries of Europe.
Although Mardi Gras is basically a Catholic holiday, today it is party
for everyone here in United States. This is especially
true in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana which can be credited
for introducing this tradition in the country.
Ash Wednesday – February 21:
Ash Wednesday, which took place this past
Wednesday, marks the onset of the Lent, the 40-day period of fasting and
abstinence. It is also known as the 'Day of Ashes'. So called because on
that day at church the faithful have their foreheads marked with ashes
in the shape of a cross.

Newsletter Sponsor – Mrs. Texas United States® Pageant:
This week’s newsletter is sponsored by the Mrs. Texas United States Pageant, the premiere competition for married women. The state contest has called Frisco home for the last three years, with this year’s competition May 11-13 at the host hotel Westin Stonebriar Resort. A souvenir program book, with a long shelf life, is produced each year. Ads and event sponsorships for activities during the pageant weekend are available, tailored to your business’ needs. Contact the pageant office at info@mrstexasunitedstates.com or Marketing Consultant Tina Grimes at tina.grimes@yahoo.com or 214.228.4401 for advertising and sponsorship information.
Additionally, entries are still being accepted until April 15th. If you want to have a fun, girls’ weekend meeting new friends, consider entering the competition. Contestants must be married, living in Texas, and children are not a factor. Our winners have been all over the age and lifestyle spectrum; we’ve had stay-at-home moms win, as well as those with full-time jobs outside the home. No experience is necessary, and there is no talent competition. Most of the women who enter a pageant for married women have never done so previously. The new Mrs. Texas competes at the televised Mrs. United States Pageant in Las Vegas this summer. Limited local titles are available. Visit www.mrstexasunitedstates.com for more information.
Spotlight on…Accent Awards and Trophies:
I recently joined Accent Awards and Trophies and wanted to share some of the exciting changes that I have been working on. Accent Awards and Trophies is Frisco’s only Trophy and Awards shop. Our goal in 2007 is to insure your needs are met with prompt, accurate and courteous service. To help our customers, we have recently added a section on our website that allows you to look at and build the Trophy, Plaque or Award you need. You can order from the website or you can simply get your ideas from the website and then give me a call at the shop.
How does someone find
you?
Ok Lon, thanks for all
of that great information. Now the part that everybody has been waiting
for. Since we all love specials, any special offer for newsletter
readers? Frisco Association of Concerned Taxpayers Launch Petition Drive For Late Night Hours Initiative:
A few months ago, an ordinance was brought before the City Council to allow restaurants and hotels within Frisco to serve alcoholic beverages until 2am. It failed by a vote of 4-2. Based on the informal survey I did through the newsletter around that time, over 75% of you were in favor of passing this ordinance. Now you have the opportunity for this to be brought to a vote of the citizens during the May election. In order for it to make it to the ballot however, a certain number of signatures have to be collected. If you would like the opportunity to vote on this in May, you must sign the petition this weekend as the signatures have to be turned in on Monday.
Petitions are now at the Embassy Suites, Texas Land and Cattle, Snookies, Hooters, The Irish Rover, Isabella’s (behind Cantina Laredo) at Legacy and SH121, Varsity Sports Grill at Main and 423, and the Chamber of Commerce on Main St.
For more information on this, please see the press release at the end of this newsletter.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:
As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.
Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.
Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.
Tornado Talk…by Junior Sports Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:
Finally a beautiful and much needed SWEEP!!! The Tornado pulled out two very nice wins this weekend over the Springfield Jr. Blues to be 10 points out of 1st place.
Brian Reagan started Friday night off strong with a goal and Stephane Da Costa and Ryan Fuller assisted. Ben Miller snagged a goal about a minute later to give the Tornado a 2-0 lead at the end of 1 period. Springfield started of the 2nd period with a goal to keep it 2-1. Jake Newton got a goal 16 minutes in to lead 3-1 with Adam Flink assisting. Springfield had one more goal in the period and little did they know it would be their last. It was 3-2 going in to the 3rd, so Springfield did still have a chance. The only goal of the 3rd period was Nielsson Arcibal’s to make the final 4-2. Shots on goal were 38 to 26. Goalie Jason Ritter started his 2nd game and got 1st star of the game with Jake Newton getting 2nd.
Saturday night was started off by a Springfield goal on a power play. And that was it for them, the rest was all Tornado. Troy Puente got his 2nd goal of the season also on a power play to tie it up 1-1. Nielsson Arcibal scored a short-handed goal with 50 seconds left in the period. The lone goal in the 2nd period was Jake Newton’s, his 2nd of the weekend. And in the 3rd period Brad McCabe came up with an empty netter to end the game 4-1. Shots on goal were 37 to 23.   |
