Mornings with Matt:

I’m always looking for more ways to communicate and reach out to citizens and an idea that I have had for a long time is to pick a day each week where I hang out at a local coffee house and just have an open forum with anybody who wants to come by. We recently started doing this each Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30 at It’s A Grind located at the Shops at Starwood (SW corner of Lebanon and the Dallas North Tollway). The owner, Marchand Froschheuser, is a Frisco resident and dear friend and I hope you will support her business any chance you get and stop by on Wednesdays to talk about issues facing our great city, or really anything for that matter.

This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. There are so many amazing things in this newsletter, as there are every week. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.  Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this list as a more informed society is a more functional society.

If you have questions or have any community events, people or groups you want to recognize, fundraising events, or any newsworthy items you would like to see added and shared with more than forty thousand residents and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please send me an email so I may include them. The newsletter goes out each Thursday and I need materials by the end of the day on the preceding Wednesday if you want something to be included.

If you received this from somebody else and would like to be added to the list, just send me an email. Your email address will never be sold, rented, or given to anybody else for any reason as your privacy is of the utmost importance to me. All newsletters can also be found on our web site at www.mattlafatamarketing.com.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. When traveling north on the service road of the tollway between 121 and Main St. The service road narrows to one lane for the Lebanon and Main St.exit ramps for the DNT, but not for the Stonebrook ramp. Why is this?

I have noticed car exit the tollway at this exit at a high rate of speed (when compared to the speed of the service road), and with the short merge area for merging with existing traffic, there is cause for concern that an accident will occur. not to mention that the service road veers to the left as well just prior to the light at Stonebrook.

Why was narrowing the service road to a single lane not considered for this exit ramp? Can this be considered in the future, as there have been numerous times that people in the left service road lane had to brake rapidly to yield for cars exiting the ramp. Causing other cars traveling behind to also brake suddenly.

A. The ramps were determined based the volume exiting and the volume on the service roads as to the configuration that was placed. However, over the past several months, both NTTA and the City have been looking at customer service enhancements at all the ramps from SH121 to US 380. NTTA is suggesting the following improvements although the DNT was constructed as designed by Professional Engineering firms.

1. The Lebanon Northbound exit curb will be removed perpendicular to the service road and taper the leading edge. They will also install yellow reflector traffic buttons. This is being done as a customer service enhancement.

2. The Eldorado Northbound exit curb will be removed perpendicular to the service road and taper the leading edge. This is being done as a customer service enhancement.

3. The Stonebrook Northbound exit curb will be removed perpendicular to the service road and taper the leading edge. This is being done as a customer service enhancement.

4. During the conversion of all ramps to all electronic toll conversion NTTA will evaluate adding the 3rd lane of the service roads. Some of the locations discussed included Lebanon (NB); Eldorado (NB & SB); Panther Creek (NB & SB); CR 24 taper. These also are being considered as customer service enhancements.

This Day in History – Malcolm X Assassinated: February 21, 1965

From the History Channel…

In New York City, Malcolm X, an African American nationalist and
religious leader, is assassinated by rival Black Muslims while addressing his Organization of Afro-American Unity at the Audubon Ballroom in Washington Heights.

Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925, Malcolm was the son of James Earl Little, a Baptist preacher who advocated the black
nationalist ideals of Marcus Garvey. Threats from the Ku Klux Klan forced the family to move to Lansing, Michigan, where his father continued to preach his controversial sermons despite continuing threats. In 1931, Malcolm's father was brutally murdered by the white supremacist Black Legion, and Michigan authorities refused to
prosecute those responsible. In 1937, Malcolm was taken from his family by welfare caseworkers. By the time he reached high school age, he had dropped out of school and moved to Boston, where he became increasingly involved in criminal activities.

In 1946, at the age of 21, Malcolm was sent to prison on a burglary conviction. It was there he encountered the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam, whose members are popularly known as Black Muslims. The Nation of Islam advocated black nationalism and racial separatism and condemned Americans of European descent as immoral "devils." Muhammad's teachings had a strong effect on Malcolm, who entered into an intense program of self-education and took the last name "X" to symbolize his stolen African identity.

After six years, Malcolm was released from prison and became a loyal and effective minister of the Nation of Islam in Harlem, New York. In contrast with civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X advocated self-defense and the liberation of African Americans "by any means necessary." A fiery orator, Malcolm was admired by the African American community in New York and around the
country.

In the early 1960s, he began to develop a more outspoken philosophy
than that of Elijah Muhammad, whom he felt did not sufficiently support the civil rights movement. In late 1963, Malcolm's suggestion that President John F. Kennedy's assassination was a matter of the "chickens coming home to roost" provided Elijah Muhammad, who believed that Malcolm had become too powerful, with a convenient opportunity to suspend him from the Nation of Islam.

A few months later, Malcolm formally left the organization and made a
Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, where he was profoundly affected by the lack of racial discord among orthodox Muslims. He returned to America as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and in June 1964 founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, which advocated black identity and held that racism, not the white race, was the greatest foe of the African American. Malcolm's new movement steadily gained followers, and his more moderate philosophy became increasingly influential in the civil rights movement, especially among the leaders of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.

On February 21, 1965, one week after his home was firebombed, Malcolm
X was shot to death by Nation of Islam members while speaking at a rally of his organization in New York City.

February is AMD/Low Vision Awareness Month:

So far this month we have covered American Heart Month and Congenital Heart Defect Awareness…

AMD/Low Vision Awareness Month is a campaign that was started to raise awareness for macular degeneration and other vision problems. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and it affects over 15 million adults over the age of 50. During this awareness campaign, information on the eye disease warning signs and treatment options are presented.

This year's campaign slogan is "Don't Lose Sight" and actress Jane Seymour is the spokesperson for the Prevent Blindness America site and the AMD/Low Vision Awareness Month. Jane Seymour has experience with macular degeneration, as her mother suffers from it. Jane's mother, who is 92 years old, has suffered from macular degeneration for more than two decades. As a result of seeing her own mother struggle from vision loss, Seymour is committed to this campaign.

A recent study that was conducted by Prevent Blindness America found that while 96% of people believe that good vision is crucial to ones overall quality of life, only 60% of these Americans are aware of macular degeneration or that the illness causes vision loss.

Macular degeneration can develop so slowly that it's not until the vision is getting severely bad that the patient will notice. What happens when someone gets macular degeneration is their sharp, central vision is destroyed.

Macular Degeneration Risk Factors

Some of the risk factors for macular degeneration include age, heredity, smoking, and poor nutrition. Important nutrients needed for good eye health are omega-3 and lutein, but these are typically not found in even the healthiest of diets. Prevent Blindness America recommends supplements with these nutrients need to be taken to keep vision sharp.

There is no cure for macular degeneration so having regularly scheduled eye appointment is crucial to eye health.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafatamarketing.com and simply put the words REMOVE in the subject line.

Spotlight on…The Frisco Bar:

This interview was conducted with Von Best, my good friend and Owner of the soon to be open The Frisco Bar” located adjacent to his wife Rosanne’s combination California café and elegantly “cool” spa known as Solare Spa & Café.

Von, I know you and Rosanne are very active in the Frisco community with Solare Spa & Café, the Boys and Girls Club of Collin County, your church and more. Why open the Frisco Bar?

Matt, simply put I wanted to create a place where I could go and meet friends, have a bite of well-prepared food, drink a nice cold draft or perhaps a martini and feel comfortable. Many of “the” places Rosanne and I visit are too noisy, too “club like” and not conducive to having a good conversation with a friend. It made sense to open The Frisco Bar in my own neighborhood because I really wanted to create an environment where old friends meet and new friends can be found. To offer a place locally where individuals and friends can gather, to be entertained, to drop in simply for a bite to eat or a drink, where they feel welcomed and at home, that is my ultimate goal.

That sounds fantastic and I am looking forward to its opening! Speaking of that, what can people expect?

With our tagline “Frisco’s Finest Neighborhood Retreat” I wanted to be sure to create an environment that is classy yet comfortable. Plus combining an old neighborhood feel with a modern day look was important to me. Imagine dark, distressed woods, copper accents on the bar along with cobalt blue lighted glass. Our bar stools are distressed wood with fine leather seats and our soft seating areas include cobalt blue velvet sofas, mustard leather chairs along with dark brown leather winged back chairs. And we will have a thirty-seat patio area too. Combine all that with a distressed wood floor, eight plasma screens, a dart board area, a beautiful carved wood shuffle board along with a super friendly staff who won’t rush you out the door and the best burger or sirloin sandwich you’ll ever eat and a fantastic martini, you’ve got The Frisco Bar.

So you’ll be serving food too?

Absolutely. The Frisco Bar menu items will include “killer” burgers, sirloin steak sandwiches, California style fish and chips, clams and chips, tenderloin nachos and other high-end bar type food. We’ll also offer Solare chicken wraps, fish tacos and other Solare favorites as some of our healthy fare menu offerings.

I’m getting hungry just talking about this. So with the number of new restaurants and bars opening in Frisco, what will make The Frisco Bar different?

We wanted to create a place for all types of people in all types of modes. If someone feels like meeting up with friends to play darts or shuffleboard then they can do that. If others feel like relaxing on our sofas with friends enjoying a glass of wine and conversation we offer that too. Or if you are alone and feel like connecting with others while you have something to eat and or a beverage that’s okay as well. The Frisco Bar is a place where people can meet their friends or neighbors and gather in a classy spot right here in the neighborhood. The suburbs don’t offer this kind of gathering place and I wanted to offer it. As I stated previously it’s where I hope that “Old Friends meet and new friends are found.”

Von, one of my passions is music. Will your place offer live music?

You bet. We’ll offer live music on the weekends with a special focus upon local musicians on Sundays. Our hours will generally be Monday, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays 4pm until midnight, weekends from eleven am until midnight. We’ll also be featuring a movie night on Wednesdays where you may watch classics if you desire with subtitles.  We’ll offer viewing of important sporting events throughout the week and music video concerts on Thursdays.  All this will be going on and you can enjoy them or focus upon something or someone else! Look us up at www.TheFriscoBar.com for our schedule of events when we open.

Thanks so much for your time, Von. I look forward to your grand opening and wish you the greatest of success. When do you expect to open?

We hope to open around the end of February/early March but as you know the construction process can be unpredictable at times. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Tornado Talk…by Junior Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:

Well it was another weekend to forget for the Tornado. They faced their second weekend of losses in a row, this time against the first place Wichita Falls Wildcats. They remain in fourth place, but with the consecutive losses, moving up in the standings is looking a little out of touch at the moment.

Wichita Falls started off the scoring Friday night, with four goals in the 1st period alone, 3 of which were power play goals. Sean Roadhouse got the 1st Tornado goal on a 4-on-3 power play in the 2nd period. After the lone Tornado goal, Wichita got 3 more goals, 2 in the 2nd period and one at the beginning of the 3rd. The future wasn’t looking too bright for the boys, as they were down 7-1.  Sam Goodwin upped the Tornado 7-2, with Ben Van Lare and John Bullis assisting. Soon after, Ryan Fuller scored the final goal of the night with Sergei Korostin getting his 2nd assist of the night. The Wildcats outshot the boys 41-28 and the final score was 7-3.

Ryan Fuller started out Saturday’s game with his 2nd goal of the series. The glory didn’t last long though, due to Wichita scoring four consecutive goals leading through the 2nd period. Sam Goodwin also snagged his 2nd of the series tom make the score 4-2. Wichita then scored again, but so did Andrew Blazek. It wasn’t enough though, as the game ended 5-3, in favor of Wichita.

The Tornado head off to Fairbanks for a couple of games, and to hopefully bring back some wins. Have a great weekend!

DFW Family Hope Seeking Host Families for Spring 2008 Orphan Camp:

The non-profit group Family Hope, in conjunction with International Family Services adoption agency, is seeking host families for a group of orphans coming to the Frisco area March 21-31, 2008 for spring camp. The purpose of camp is to provide Ukrainian orphan children ages 8-13 an experience of a lifetime in a fun and educational environment. The camp provides these children with a whole new outlook on the world and enables them to dream of possibilities. Our camp allows the children to live in a family environment, if even for a short time. One of the best outcomes of our camp is that these children are exposed to American families, increasing their chance, as well as all older orphans' chances, of being adopted once the families see how wonderful the kids really are!

We are now accepting applications for host families. We will be accepting up to 10 families for this camp, on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Stacy Zonis at zonisfamily@tx.rr.com asap for more information.
