chrysalis kickoff

The kick off for “Fan the Flame—Chrysalis Ball 2008” benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of Collin County was held recently at Solare Café & Spa in Frisco, and owners Rosanne and Von Best (pictured below) have graciously agreed to chair the 2008 event. This past November’s gala, held at the Embassy Suites here in Frisco, featured the multiple award-winning sounds of “The Pointer Sisters” and raised $933,000 for the BGCCC. My wife Erika, along with Daniel Lewis of Green Peridot, are chairing the Marketing and Public Relations Committee this year  If you are interested on being on their committee, donating auction items, or any other form of volunteering for this event, please contact Rosanne at Rosanne@solarespa.com or Erika at eelafata@tx.rr.com.

Our good friends Von and Rosanne Best are the chairs of this great event:

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. The new "Welcome To Frisco" message in front of IKEA that both announces our great city and welcome drivers on the NB Tollway to Frisco is a great addition. However, when driving at night, it's difficult to see. Has there been any thought given to adding some lights in order to illuminate that welcome sign? I think that would be a great enhancement and would allow people to read that welcome message 24 hours a day.

A. This entry feature project does include up lighting that was turned on in the last few days. We are aware that the lighting needs to be adjusted to improve the illumination and this will occur within the week.

This Day in History – February 7, 1964: Beatles arrive in New York

From the History Channel…

On February 7, 1964, Pan Am Yankee Clipper flight 101 from London
Heathrow lands at New York's Kennedy Airport--and "Beatlemania" arrives. It was the first visit to the United States by the Beatles, a British rock-and-roll quartet that had just scored its first No. 1 U.S. hit six days before with "I Want to Hold Your Hand." At Kennedy,
the "Fab Four"--dressed in mod suits and sporting their trademark pudding bowl haircuts--were greeted by 3,000 screaming fans who caused a near riot when the boys stepped off their plane and onto American soil.

Two days later, Paul McCartney, age 21, Ringo Starr, 23, John Lennon, 23, and George Harrison, 20, made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, a popular television variety show. Although it was difficult to hear the performance over the screams of teenage girls in the studio audience, an estimated 73 million U.S. television viewers, or about 40 percent of the U.S. population, tuned in to watch.
Sullivan immediately booked the Beatles for two more appearances that
month. The group made their first public concert appearance in the
United States on February 11 at the Coliseum in Washington, D.C., and
20,000 fans attended. The next day, they gave two back-to-back
performances at New York's Carnegie Hall, and police were forced to close off the streets around the venerable music hall because of fan hysteria. On February 22, the Beatles returned to England.

The Beatles' first American tour left a major imprint in the nation's cultural memory. With American youth poised to break away from the culturally rigid landscape of the 1950s, the Beatles, with their exuberant music and good-natured rebellion, were the perfect catalyst for the shift. Their singles and albums sold millions of records, and
at one point in April 1964 all five best-selling U.S. singles were Beatles songs. By the time the Beatles first feature-film, A Hard Day's Night, was released in August, Beatlemania was epidemic the world over. Later that month, the four boys from Liverpool returned to
the United States for their second tour and played to sold-out arenas across the country.

Later, the Beatles gave up touring to concentrate on their innovative
studio recordings, such as 1967's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, a psychedelic concept album that is regarded as a masterpiece of popular music. The Beatles' music remained relevant to youth throughout the great cultural shifts of the 1960s, and critics of all ages acknowledged the songwriting genius of the Lennon-McCartney team. In 1970, the Beatles disbanded, leaving a legacy of 18 albums and 30 Top 10 U.S. singles.

During the next decade, all four Beatles pursued solo careers, with varying success. Lennon, the most outspoken and controversial Beatle, was shot to death by a deranged fan outside his New York apartment building in 1980. McCartney was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 for his contribution to British culture. In November 2001, George Harrison succumbed to cancer.

February 7-14 is Congenital Health Defect Awareness Week:

Normally we cover a monthly awareness but this particular awareness is something that has affected some very dear families to us.

Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week, Feb. 7–14, raises awareness and funds to fight congenital heart defects, which afflict about 36,000 infants a year and are the leading cause of death from birth defects.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafatamarketing.com and simply put the words REMOVE in the subject line.

Newsletter Sponsor – The Frisco Thunder:

The Frisco Thunder is back for year two - already thinking about year three.

The Intense Football League franchise is committed to posting its second straight winning season and qualifying AND winning in the playoffs during the 2008 season that starts March 1 in the Dr Pepper StarCenter.

The Thunder organization is prepared for an interesting 2008 season as the Frisco StarCenter scheduled for renovations and increased seating. To accommodate the renovations, the Thunder will play all seven home games at the start of the season, finishing the second half and playoffs on the road.

But as coaches and staff handle the day-to-day operations, owners Jake and Vinita Reed are also working on a strategic plan.

“We believe that the Frisco Thunder can be the best football experience for both fans and players by 2009,’’ said Jake Reed, the former Minnesota Viking wide receiver. “Players are going to want to play here because we will provide both the best opportunity to advance to the next level and an environment conducive to winning. It’s exciting.”

“But in 2009, we’ll have the best arena in the league and all the amenities we need,” Reed said. “It will be worth the sacrifices we’re making in 2008 and shows we believe in what can happen here in the long run.”

With EDS Credit Union as an enthusiastic title sponsor, the Thunder is gearing up for year with a commitment to community involvement and family entertainment. Thanks to a partnership with McDonalds, a family of four can go to a game and eat out before or after for as low as $40.

The Thunder has a new head coach (Troy Esprit) and new quarterback Wes Cooper, who has played in the league championship game the past two years in Corpus Christi. Many key players from 2007 return, including league leading wide receiver Antwon Courington and defensive stalwarts Courtney Brooks, Lamont Finley, DJ Johnson and Nathan Jackson.

“I’m here to win and I’m here to improve my players’ game,’’ Esprit said. “We’re looking forward to an exciting season. Come check us out.”

Spotlight on…The Cotton Mill:

This interview was conducted with Darla Lovett of The Cotton Mill Partners…

Darla, please tell us about The Cotton Mill:

The Cotton Mill is a very unique facility, with its hardwood floors, high ceilings and historic charm, it is rapidly becoming a "Destination Place".  Currently we are leasing office space & hosting events in our Event Hall.  With respect to leasing, we offer fabulous New York style loft offices that we specifically tailor to your company's needs.  Our main tenant focus has been toward the "creative" type businesses.  Additionally, we have a gorgeous Event Hall that is over 8,500 sq. ft.  It is the perfect "blank canvas" to host a wedding reception, Quinceanera, or corporate celebration.  We are also host to several hundred photo shoots throughout the year for engagement, bridal, graduation, and family portraits.

Please tell us what's so unique about what you do and your facility?

Our uniqueness has to be the many facets to our business.  Although we plan to continue leasing office space and hosting Events and photo shoots; future development plans will include loft-style apartments as well as upscale restaurants and heavy retail.  The property encompasses 27 acres which gives us plenty of room to grow.  Additional plans include a 15,000 sq. ft. music venue/restaurant on the East side of the property and an empty-nest style community on the South side.

Darla, Erika and I and all of our wedding guests were so impressed by our wedding at The Cotton Mill. So how does someone find you so that others can enjoy this great experience?

I'm so pleased that you & Erika shared your special day at The Cotton Mill and I am glad that you and your guests had such a wonderful experience!  There are several ways to find us.  You can check out our website at www.McKinneyCottonMill.com or just give me a call at 972-838-7558.  Our physical address is 610 Elm Street, McKinney, TX.  If you'd like to just stop in, please do, we'll show you around the place.

Darla, this is the part of the spotlight where people get to know a little more about you. One of my passions is music and in fact I have almost 6,000 songs on my iPod. What kind of music do you like to listen to?

Well Matt, I'm kind of partial to rock & roll but appreciate all types of music.  That is one of the things that I'm most excited about with respect to our property.  I am working on hosting a concert in the very near future...I hear Country Music is popular around these parts & I'd love to bring some top acts to the stage for the folks in McKinney, Frisco, Sherman, Plano and all of our surrounding Cities.

Ok, is there anything else you would like to share with readers of this newsletter?

I would like to thank your readers for taking the time to find out a little about us.  I would also like to invite anyone who is looking for office space or the perfect place to host their special event to check us out!  We have something special here & love showing it off!!
