Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

The Citizen of the Month for January is one of our FISD crossing guards. Frisco resident Jennifer Heard nominated this person and here is what she had to say:

“I would like to nominate one of the neatest people in our city to be the citizen of the month for the Frisco Community newsletter.  I have no idea what her name is but she is faithful to show up every school day to help the children of Frisco ISD.

This beautiful lady is the crossing guard at the corner of Hillcrest and Lebanon on the east side of town. She is energetic and happy to see each and every child that crosses her path.  At one time, both she and her husband worked together for the Frisco ISD but his failing health has resulted in her doing this job with a different partner this year.  You will not pass by her corner during the after/before-school hours without hearing things like "good morning, kids!"  "how ya doing today?"  "alright!!!!"  She even brings cold water bottles for the children during the incredible Texas heat for them to have on their way home.

This crossing guard is a jewel and my kids (not even in Frisco schools) LOVE to roll down the window and wave to her.  We all should have such a fantastic attitude about our jobs.  She is one of a kind.  Just drive by one day and you will see what I mean.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. Is there an ordinance regarding when/where firearms can be discharged, specifically with regards to residential areas? I ask because on 12/31 (New Years Eve) there were multiple incidents in my neighborhood where residents were firing their guns in the air to celebrate the new year.

I had thought about calling the non-emergency number to report the concern, but was unsure of any recourse that would allow a patrol in the area the rest of the evening.

For the future, and any other time this might occur, can you provide information regarding what actions residents can take when situations like this occur. Thanks in advance.

A. Yes, there is an ordinance against discharging firearms in the city. In the future, please call police communications at 972.292.6010 or 9-1-1 to report the violation and an officer will be dispatched. The same applies for the discharge of fireworks in the city.

This Day in History – January 11, 1908: Theodore Roosevelt makes Grand Canyon a national monument

From the History Channel…

On January 11, 1908, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declares the
massive Grand Canyon in northwestern Arizona a national monument.

Though Native Americans lived in the area as early as the 13th century, the first European sighting of the canyon wasn't until 1540, by members of an expedition headed by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Because of its remote and inaccessible location, several centuries passed before North American settlers really explored the canyon. In 1869, geologist John Wesley Powell led a group of 10 men in the first difficult journey down the rapids of the
Colorado River and along the length of the 277-mile gorge in four rowboats.

By the end of the 19th century, the Grand Canyon was attracting thousands of tourists each year. One famous visitor was President Theodore Roosevelt, a New Yorker with a particular affection for the American West. After becoming president in 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley, Roosevelt made
environmental conservation a major part of his presidency. After
establishing the National Wildlife Refuge to protect the country's animals, fish and birds, Roosevelt turned his attention to federal regulation of public lands. Though a region could be given national park status--indicating that all private development on that land was
illegal--only by an act of Congress, Roosevelt cut down on red tape by
beginning a new presidential practice of granting a similar "national monument" designation to some of the West's greatest treasures.

In January 1908, Roosevelt exercised this right to make more than
800,000 acres of the Grand Canyon area into a national monument. "Let
this great wonder of nature remain as it now is," he declared. "You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is keep it for your children, your children's children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see."

Congress did not officially outlaw private development in the Grand
Canyon until 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Grand
Canyon National Park Act. Today, more than 5 million people visit the canyon each year. The canyon floor is accessible by foot, mule or boat, and whitewater rafting, hiking and running in the area are especially popular. Many choose to conserve their energies and simply take in the breathtaking view from the canyon's South Rim--some 7,000 feet above sea level--and marvel at a vista virtually unchanged for over 400 years.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month:

Last week we covered Rotary awareness…

The American Cancer Society estimates that each year in the U.S. there are approximately 10,000 cases of cervical cancer, resulting in nearly 4,000 deaths. These numbers are especially tragic given that cervical cancer can virtually always be prevented through screening (such as Pap tests, either alone or in combination with HPV tests). The American Social Health Association (ASHA), along with a number of other public health organizations, recognizes January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and stresses the need for women to be educated about the disease and to have access to screening tests and to recently developed HPV vaccines

2006 was a breakthrough year in the fight against cervical cancer, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first vaccine against the disease, Merck and Company's Gardasil. GlaxoSmithKline is also expected to submit a cervical cancer vaccine, Cervarix, to the FDA for approval in 2007.

Cervical cancer is most often detected among women who have either never had a Pap test, or have gone many years without one, and in the U.S. the disease disproportionately impacts poor women and women of color. ASHA President and CEO Lynn B. Barclay says "Cervical cancer is most often detected among women who have either never had a Pap test, or have gone many years without one, and in the U.S. the disease disproportionately impacts poor women and women of color. ASHA President and CEO Lynn B. Barclay says "Science has put us in a remarkable position to protect women from cervical cancer, but technology is only half the battle. Cervical cancer is preventable, treatable, and curable. Vaccines, Pap tests and HPV tests are a remarkable life-saving trio. No woman has to die from cervical cancer."

ASHA's National HPV & Cervical Cancer Prevention Resource Center addresses these challenges by offering numerous programs that include national advocacy, hotline services, publications, and support groups. The Center was created in 2000 to address the multiple issues.

ASHA's publications include HPV NEWS, a bi-monthly electronic journal that provides information on cervical cancer prevention, genital warts, the latest on research, vaccines, and treatment information. Each issue of HPV NEWS also addresses the emotional and relationship aspects of being diagnosed with HPV, offering support and comfort through regular columns such as "Ask the Experts" and a "Personal Perspectives" section written by readers.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Aaron Moore has released a new EP (five song release) into digital distribution.  The EP is entitled “MindNumbing Overtures and Preludes” and includes diverse instrumental tracks, from light jazz to techno.  He is known for his inventive use of keyboard synthesizers to create evocative ambient/emotronic soundscapes, perfect for soundtracks.  Mr. Moore often plays locally with his backup band, The Issues.  He is a graduate of the University of North Texas Radio, TV, and Film program.  You can acquire the tracks from www.Myspace.com/mentallycranked.

Performing songwriter, author, speaker and “Alpha Gigster,” Ryan Michael Galloway, has also released his latest EP into digital distribution.  Titled “Rock the Big House Down,” it is immediately available at the “set your own price” MP3 download site, www.Songslide.com.  The physical CD will be available at CDBaby.com in a few weeks, and CD download distribution will be available from Walmart.com, Amazon.com, ITunes, etc., in a few months. While the titular track is a high energy rock anthem, the remaining four songs feature rich harmonies and tasty acoustic work with intimate singer/songwriter vocals.  The songs have been getting approximately 3000 plays a day at www.Myspace.com/ryanmgalloway, where you can also give them a listen.  According to Myspace, Ryan is currently ranked the 7th top acoustic independent artist in Texas, and number 9 in the Folk Rock category.  Mr. Galloway’s new music career DVD and textbook package, “Live Sound,” is also available at http://www.gigsterclinics.com/livesound.

Tornado Talk…by Junior Reporter Kaleigh Lafata:

Since the newsletter is late this week, Kaleigh actually wrote this before the Tornado win last night, which I am sure she will take about in next week’s newsletter…

Your Texas Tornado have a new accomplishment; moving up to 5th place! After winning 3 out of their last 4 games, the Tornado may have finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel. This past weekend the Tornado fought hard against the first place Wichita Falls Wildcats and came out with one win and one well played loss.

On Friday night, Ben Van Lare started of the scoring 8 minutes into the game with Gustav Bengtson and Justin Lee assisting. Towards the end of the 1st period, Wichita got their first goal of the game. The second period didn’t start off as well as the first did. Wichita scored another goal, and yet another on a power play. Leading 3-1 the Wildcats felt pretty good about themselves heading into the last period. That is until Ben Van Lare snagged a nice goal with Gustav Bengtson assisting once again. Troy Puente joined in the fun and tied up the game with a helpful goal. Soon after, Ben Van Lare achieved the ever wonderful Hat Trick and won the game for the Tornado 4-3. Wichita even out shot the Tornado 29 to 27.

Saturday was quite the eventful night, with 12 total goals scored. Sam Goodwin started off the game with a Tornado goal with Andrew Blazek and Ben Van Lare assisting. Wichita Falls followed that up with not one, not two, but three goals. All of the goals were over a 3 minute span and two of them were on a power play. Andrew Blazek snuck one goal in there on a power play right before the Wildcats got their 4th goal of the night. After only one period, things weren’t looking to good for the Tornado. It was time for the boys to step it up a bit, and John Kruse did, scoring a power play goal to start of the 2nd period with Sean Roadhouse and Troy Puente assisting him. Sadly, two more additional Wildcats goals were scored making the score 6-3 with only one more chance to turn things around. Sean Roadhouse scored a goal with Gustav Bengtson and Ben Van Lare assisting him, hoping to start the Tornado on a scoring streak. Well towards the end of the period, Sam Goodwin scored his 2nd goal of the night, but it wasn’t enough plus the Wildcats scored an empty netter to end the game 7-5. The Tornado lost despite outscoring Wichita 38 to 22.

Also congratulations to Ben Van Lare for being the NAHL South Division player of the week and Thomas Callaghan for receiving it the week before. The Tornado continue their home stand this weekend against the Kenai River Brown Bears. The season is continuing to get better and better and you don’t want to miss any of the action.
