Dear Friends,

Happy New Year and welcome to the Frisco community newsletter, as presented by Matt Lafata and the Matt Lafata Marketing Group. We are now in our sixth year of bringing the best in community news and business offers to Frisco and the surrounding areas. As always, if you have a community event or newsworthy item that you want in the newsletter, please send it to us at events@mattlafatamarketing.com. If you are interested in joining the many other businesses who have had success in advertising in this newsletter, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more information.

A number of changes and enhancements have taken place over the past few weeks and more are in store for 2007. As you know, the newsletter now has a clickable table of contents. The staff and contributors list has grown to include Kaleigh Lafata – Tornado Talk, Sarah Ianace – Happenings in Frisco ISD, Glenn Kopanski – Landscape Design, and Pedro Checo – Advice from Dr. Checo. More will be added as we continue to expand our already encompassing coverage.  Many of you have also commented on how much you like the “blog” that I include every couple of weeks. I have moved this feature to a blog site and will post here in the newsletter any time something is new out there. The site is http://mattlafata.blogstream.com

This week’s newsletter is proudly sponsored by the Mrs. Texas United States pageant, the premiere competition for married women. You can represent Frisco’s married women. It’s the first step to become the next Mrs. Texas United States.  Deadline to enter is next Sunday, January 14th, and you can find out more about it below.  Also check out the spotlight on Fitness Mindset Training and the special offer of a free initial consultation. Erika and I have been working with Tony at FMT for the past couple of months and have been very pleased. A lot of work goes into putting this newsletter together and I greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors so please patronize them wherever possible.

Please, please turn off your automatic sprinklers for the winter. There is no reason to water your lawn this winter. We are receiving a fair amount of rain and it drives me nuts when I drive around and see people with their automatic sprinklers on. Please turn them off or we may face more serious consequences this summer without some serious rainfall this winter and spring.

Good luck to our Texas Tornado as they play two important games in Wichita this weekend and good luck to the Dallas Cowboys in their playoff game this weekend.

This newsletter and information source is designed to bring us all a little closer together each week by providing coverage of so many things going on in our community. There are so many amazing things in this newsletter, as there are every week. Please forward this newsletter to all your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up to receive it themselves. They will greatly appreciate you for it as no citizen should be without this important information at their fingertips.  Let’s work to get all Frisco citizens on this list as a more informed society is a more functional society.

If you have a business, restaurant or a service and are interested in advertising and reaching more than 35,000 individuals and businesses in Frisco and the surrounding areas, please email us at sales@mattlafatamarketing.com for more details on the various options available to you. The newsletter is also included on the web site www.mattlafatamarketing.com and www.frisco-online.com for additional exposure. It’s a great way to promote your business, promote an event at your place of business and is the most cost effective and efficient way to reach a large segment of the Frisco population. You may want to also consider providing a special offer to newsletter readers only.

Spotlight on…Fitness Mindset Training:

This interview was conducted with Tony Vaglienti, owner of Fitness Mindset Training…

Tony, tell us about your business:

I founded Fitness Mindset Training based on my belief that only permanent mental lifestyle changes will lead people to becoming more healthy and fit.  All people should see fitness as a priority, yet few do; most rate it a 5 or lower on an importance scale of 1 - 10.  My goal is to get my clients to at least see fitness as an 8.  Physical fitness is a form of life insurance; we should all be willing to make monthly, even daily, "payments" to prevent health disasters later in life.

So Tony, we have been very pleased with the results we have obtained since starting to work with you about two months ago but what makes you different from your competition? What makes your business unique?

Fitness Mindset Training is unique because I specialize in couples training in addition to the one-on-one training I offer.  Couples training tends to be more effective at leading towards permanent lifestyle changes because both people are on board with the program.  I also take my show on the road.  Almost all of my clients are trained in their own homes, which makes the techniques I teach easier for them to implement on a regular basis.  In addition, I offer several boot camp options in the Little Elm area.

How does somebody get in touch with you?

The best way to contact me is by calling my cell phone, 972-979-4247.  If I do not answer when prospective clients call, they should always leave their names and contact numbers so that I can return their call.  My business email address is fmt@grandecom.net, but I'm such an active person that I don't have much time to sit in front of a computer.  My response time with email is generally 1-2 days, whereas my response time for phone calls is generally 1-2 hours.

Ok Tony, everybody loves a special. What can you offer our newsletter readers?

My "special" for all prospective clients is a free initial consultation, which includes body measurements, body fat analysis, and nutritional guidelines.  In addition, I evaluate exercise attitudes, beliefs, likes, and dislikes so that I can tailor the workouts to match the individual/couple.  My program does not consist of cookie-cutter workouts; each of my clients is in a different place as far as fitness is concerned, and I make sure that they each progress at their own pace.  I call this a pyramid of progression; we start out small at the top and gradually build to a stronger base.

I love to eat out and this is somewhat of a loaded question for a fitness trainer, but what are some of your favorite restaurants in this area?

I love food and I do enjoy eating out, but I try to avoid it as much as possible; restaurant-prepared foods are rarely as healthy as they could be if they were prepared at home.  My wife loves Applebee's because they have a Weight Watchers menu.  I personally am a Subway fan; it's hard to beat their quick, healthy, anytime offerings.  However, my true preference is my wife's home-cooked meals; she's always trying out some new, healthy recipe.

Music is another great passion of mine. What kind of music do you like to listen to?

I listen to music on occasion, but my wife's the music fan in our home.  My radio is usually tuned to a sports talk radio station.  However, I try to listen out for new tunes that will help motivate my boot campers; they really get invigorated when I steal one of my wife's CDs and bring in new music options for our workouts.

Thanks Tony. Anything else you would like to let our readers know about you and your business?

I've recently purchased some new equipment so that I can continue to be innovative with my clients; many of them have been with me for over two years.  However, I am always looking for new clients and creative ways to expand my fitness horizons.

How to Whitelist this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

Tornado Talk…by Junior Sports Reporter, Kaleigh Lafata:

This past weekend, your Tornado continued their longest winning streak of the season that abruptly ended on Sunday. They had a good run, winning 8 games in a row. But as we all know, all good things must come to an end.

Friday night in Texas was a good one. The first period was all Tornado as Tom Brooks struck first with a goal 4 minutes into the game on a power play.  Justin King followed that up halfway through the period, also on a power play with Jake Newton and Sean Roadhouse assisting. And Ben Miler finished off the period strong with an unassisted goal and only 13 seconds left.  In the 2nd period Wichita scored their 1st goal to make the score 3-1. A minute later Nielsson Arcibal followed it up with a goal on a power play to lead 4-1 going into the 3rd period. The 3rd period was downhill for the Tornado, but they still came out on top after Wichita scored 2 goals to make the final score 4-3.  The 3 stars of the game were Sean Roadhouse, Rob Blanchette, and Ben Miller. Shots on goal were 33 to 27.

Saturday night was a great win for the Tornado, but it turned out it was their last win of an 8 eight game winning streak. They faced the St. Louis Bandits in Chesterfield, MO., which is really a beautiful place to visit if you haven’t been. It was a pretty slow 1st and 2nd period as there was no scoring.  But in the 3rd period, the boys really stepped it up a notch. Adam Flink put one in only 34 seconds into the 3rd to score the first goal of the game.  Dylan Cooper and Brian Reagan assisted, who by the way is a St. Louis native.  Brian Reagan really put on a good show for his hometown fans as he scored a goal a couple minutes later to give the Tornado a 2-0 lead. 38 seconds away from the shut out must have put the pressure on goalie Thomas Tragust, who let in a goal to give the Bandits their only one of the game. With the game close to the end, Ryan Fuller, who has really stepped into the spotlight the season, sealed the deal with an empty net goal with 18 seconds left. The 3 stars were Thomas Tragust, Brian Reagan, and Pat Maroon from the Bandits. The Bandits out shot the Tornado 51-30.

Playing a late hockey game on New Years Eve has its ups and downs but for the Tornado it just had downs. Just like Saturday night, the 1st period had no scoring. The 2nd period though, was all Bandits as they scored 2 goals at the end of the period, just minutes apart. And the 3rd period was pretty much the same.  St. Louis scored 3 more goals to make the score 5-0. Hope was lost for the Tornado as there were 9 minutes left and they were down by 5. But, St. Louis native Tom Brooks scored a goal with just over a minute left. 14 seconds after Troy Puente scored his 1st goal of the season to make the final score 5-2, not allowing the Bandits goalie to achieve a shut out.  St. Louis out shot the Tornado 41-35.

The Tornado play this Friday and Saturday in Wichita Falls then come home on Jan. 12th and 13th to face the 2nd place Santa Fe Roadrunners.  And on January 10th you can listen to the Tony Curtale show on the tornado website www.tornadohockey.com, as you can listen to any games on there as well. Don’t miss these exciting games that lead the Tornado on the path to the four-peat. Have a good weekend!

Preston Trail Community Church moving into new location:

Preston Trail Community Church has been known as "The Church in the Mall" for over four years now. But starting in 2007 it will be known as "The Church Across from Brinkman Ranch." PTCC began meeting in the AMC Theatres at Stonebriar Centre in September 2002 with forty people on the launch team and high hopes of reaching people who have given up on God or on traditional church. Four years later, the church is moving into the newly refurbished PC Dynamics Building on Frisco's Main Street, half a mile east of Preston Road.

More than 600 people now claim PTCC as their church home and are excited about the move. The new facility can seat 720 in worship, accommodate over 200 youth, and teach and care for over 500 infants and children. The manufacturing format of the original building has been incorporated into the new look. One of the senior pastors, Jim Johnson, calls it "Industrial Hip," while the other senior pastor, Paul Basden, simply says, "If you like Home Depot, you will love our building!"

Please join us for our grand opening on Sunday January 21 at 9:30 and 11:00 AM. For more information on the church and the new facility, visit us online at www.prestontrail.org.

Advice from Dr. Checo – The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI):

Hello Frisco,

The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) that came out several years ago is considered by most physicians to be a landmark study. If you recall, this was a large, multicenter study that successfully changed the practice habits of the majority of doctors worldwide because, in essence, it demonstrated that the profligate use of exogenous hormones for the prevention of heart disease in women was, candidly, wrong. As a result of this, most doctors, including yours truly, drastically altered our prescribing habits. This alteration has been, in my opinion, somewhat detrimental to our female patients. Let me explain.

First of all, allow me to state the obvious: I’m not a gynecologist. That being said, I do see and treat many women for the typical issues that prompt internal medicines visits. Amongst those issues are those that have to do with menopause. The ladies in the audience are likely rolling their eyes as they read this. That’s because this time in a women’s life is, shall we say, trying. Specifically, I’m referring to the symptoms that menopause is responsible for. In medical-speak, vasomotor symptoms. In real-world speak, hot flashes/ night sweats- need I go on? I will now point you back to the top paragraph; the WHI caused most of us to think of estrogen/hormone replacement therapy as harmful. I think we overshot what this study called for- because of this, the underprescribing of HRT has caused needless suffering that our female patients have had to endure.

Thus, women going through menopause face a dilemma: suffer through the symptoms, take the “risk” and use HRT or look for alternatives. Now, before I go on, let me just say that doctors weren’t completely at fault for this seismic shift in thinking. A lot of women got wind of the study and stopped taking their HRT’s cold, fearing dire consequences if they continued. Irrespective of the reason, the dilemma existed (and still does, to some degree). Thus, the notion of herbal replacements for traditional hormones took hold and has taken off ever since. Has it had an impact? Does it actually do a good job at replacing HRT?

A new study recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine doesn’t think so. Briefly, the study examined the effects of 3 herbal regimens versus traditional estrogen with/without progesterone. A cohort of 351 women was studied from 2001 to 2004. The results are disappointing for those looking at viable alternatives for relief of these oppressive symptoms. The authors concluded that the herbal “remedies”, black cohosh amongst them, were not effective in reducing the vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. This was something a lot of physicians were suspicious of but this is the first time it has been formally proven. This is not to say that it may not be effective for you, but it does, unfortunately take away this alternative for most women.

“Well, Dr. Checo, now that you’ve burst our bubble, what now?”

Glad you asked. Back to the future, I say. First off, none of the herbal alternatives help with osteoporosis or the prevention thereof. Secondly, they seem to be safe but no one knows for sure regarding long-term use. So while the news is disappointing, all is not lost. Enter, yes, HRT. Please keep in mind that the WHI never stated that estrogen was completely off-limits. All it said, amongst other things, is that it should NOT be used for prevention of heart disease. Also, if other modalities are available for the prevention of osteoporosis, those alternatives should be considered first, such as Fosamax, Evista, etc. With that being said, vasomotor symptoms are still an indication for the use of HRT- with some caveats. So here’s my (admittedly non-gynecological) advice: take the lowest dose possible to control symptoms for the least amount of time. What that means is that the previous “standard” dose of .625 mg of estrogen has been relegated to the medicinal trash heap. I tell my patients to go as low as they can, dosage wise, for symptomatic relief and periodically (biannually or annually) try to get off HRT. If the symptoms recur, get right back on it. Take it for as long as you need to but not a day more. Remember, menopause does end- I promise! Once it does, all things being equal, you’re cleared to permanently discontinue HRT.

Of course, this should all be done under the auspices of your doctor. To state the obvious, each patient is different. Hence your needs may be unique. For example, a woman with a strong family history of breast cancer needs a much different approach than her co-worker with a benign family history. Talk this over with your physician. See what he or she suggests. Discuss it and get what’s best for you. What you shouldn’t do is suffer needlessly. There’s help out there. All you have to do is ask.

Road Construction Update:

SH 121 - As you probably know if you have driven on this road but the Denton County portion of SH121 is now fully operational as a toll road. Cash is NOT accepted on this section; only toll tags. However, if you drive it without a toll tag, you will simply get a bill in the mail, and at a higher rate.  At this time, both the TTC (Texas Transportation Committee) and TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) are accepting bids on the sale of the Denton County section of SH 121 to a private company. The Collin County section, from the Dallas North Tollway to State Highway 75 in McKinney, has yet to be decided.  The decision was made by the TTC, TxDOT and the RTC (Regional Transit Council) that it will be a toll road, although your City Council in Frisco passed a resolution against this. Unfortunately the concept of toll roads is how you will see many roads funded in Texas in the future, in my opinion. Whether you agree with this or not, the current gas tax of 20 cents is barely enough to keep up with maintenance of existing roads so the money has to come from somewhere. In order to fund all the roads that need building, the tax rate on a gallon of gas would have to be increased to over one dollar per gallon. No politician is going to support that so you will continue to see new roads built as toll roads throughout the state of Texas, plain and simple.

DNT Extension – The NTTA continues to work at a rapid pace completing much of the main lane paving between Gaylord and Warren Parkway this month. The outside EB through lane on Main Street was closed between the Dallas Parkway frontage roads this month to correct a drainage issue. This lane is expected to be opened to traffic by the end of the month. The dynamic lane use signs erected for EB traffic on Main Street now provide the ability to designate the middle lane as a right-turn lane during the AM peak and a through lane during the rest of the day. This sign has been programmed as a right-turn only until the drainage issue under the bridge is corrected.

U-Turns along DNT - All U-turns along the Dallas North Tollway should be open by the end of January.

Preston Road overpass – This is now completely open over SH121.

SH121/Ohio Drive Intersection – This is a state project and the construction of the overpass over SH121 is scheduled to be complete in November/December 2007.

FM2934/Eldorado Parkway from FM423 to Dallas North Tollway – This is a state project. Once final approval of the environmental assessment is complete, staff anticipates beginning right-of-way acquisition in January or February of 2007. Utility relocations will begin when that is complete. Roadway construction will then begin and it is anticipated to take 18 to 24 months to widen the road to six lanes.

FM3537/Main Street from Preston Road to Custer Parkway – This is a state project. Right-of-way acquisitions are anticipated to begin in July 2007 and then utility relocations will begin when that is complete. Project will likely begin at the end of 2007, or early 2008, and take approximately 24 months to complete. This project will widen the road to six lanes.

FM423 from Stewart Creek Road to US 380 – This is a state project. The middle section should go to bid in September 2007 and take 24 months to construct once it begins. The north section (from FM720 going north) will likely go to bid in March of 2008 and take approximately 24 months to construct. This project will widen the road to six lanes.

SH289/Preston Road from Main Street to US380 – This is a state project. TxDOT is currently acquiring right-of-way and when that is complete, utility relocations will take place. When that is complete, construction will begin and take approximately 30 months to continue. This project will widen the road to six lanes.

Frisco Square Street Improvements (Frisco Square, Page, and Cook) – These roads will be complete in December.

Seventh Street from Main to Hickory – This project will improve the existing asphalt street to concrete with curb and gutter, sidewalks, lighting, and other improvements. Design services are anticipated to begin in 2007.

El Dorado Parkway from Preston Road to DNT – This will widen the road to four lanes and be done in two phases. Phase 1, which will be from the DNT to Frisco Street and from North County to Preston, is anticipated to be complete in April 2008. Phase 2, which is the remainder of that section, including the Railroad overpass is anticipated to be complete in September 2008.

Independence Parkway from Main Street to SH121 – This will widen the road to four lanes and is anticipated to be complete in September 2007.

Lebanon Parkway from 4th Army Memorial to FM423 – This will widen the road to four lanes and is anticipated to begin in early 2007 and be complete in October 2007.

Legacy Drive from Main to Citation – This will widen the road to four lanes. It is anticipated to go out for bid in January 2007 and construction is anticipated to take 9-12 months.
