This picture was taken in Rockport, MA on New Year’s Eve. Rockport is a small town right next to the Town of Gloucester, MA where I grew up. Erika and I visited that area for New Year’s to visit family.

As we enter 2008, I am extremely thankful and blessed for everything I have in my life. 2007 was such a great year for me personally and professionally and it is a direct result of all the people that I have in my life – family, friends, and supporters. I am really looking forward to an even better 2008 and I would like to wish everybody a very happy and prosperous 2008!

Citizen of the Month and Neighborhood of the Month Details

If you have a citizen or neighborhood you would like to nominate, please send it to me.

The Citizen of the Month will focus on a person or group in Frisco who has been nominated by another individual. He, she or they could be a person or a group who has recently done something special that contributes to the well-being of our city and/or its citizens, or it could be somebody who has had (or currently has) an interesting career or experiences that could be shared with our readers.

The Neighborhood of the Month will highlight a particular neighborhood in our city. I am looking to hear from you as to why your Neighborhood is so special.

The Citizen of the Month for January is one of our FISD crossing guards. Frisco resident Jennifer Heard nominated this person and here is what she had to say:

“I would like to nominate one of the neatest people in our city to be the citizen of the month for the Frisco Community newsletter.  I have no idea what her name is but she is faithful to show up every school day to help the children of Frisco ISD.

This beautiful lady is the crossing guard at the corner of Hillcrest and Lebanon on the east side of town. She is energetic and happy to see each and every child that crosses her path.  At one time, both she and her husband worked together for the Frisco ISD but his failing health has resulted in her doing this job with a different partner this year.  You will not pass by her corner during the after/before-school hours without hearing things like "good morning, kids!"  "how ya doing today?"  "alright!!!!"  She even brings cold water bottles for the children during the incredible Texas heat for them to have on their way home.

This crossing guard is a jewel and my kids (not even in Frisco schools) LOVE to roll down the window and wave to her.  We all should have such a fantastic attitude about our jobs.  She is one of a kind.  Just drive by one day and you will see what I mean.

City of Frisco Related Question of the Week:

Q. Are permits required by the City of Frisco for basic home remodeling projects like:
replacing kitchen cabinets?
appliances?
flooring?
windows?
lighing?
tankless hot water heater?
a power conditioning system?

A. Painting, wallpaper, floor covering, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work are exempt from permit requirements. Replacement of appliances and/or fixtures that are plug and cord connected, or do not require any alteration in the electrical or plumbing systems are also exempt. Permits and inspections are required for the replacement of water heaters, air conditioning systems and windows. The best recommendation is to contact Building Inspections to confirm that a permit is not required for your specific project. Building Inspections can be reached at 972 292-5301.

This Day in History – January 3, 1990: Noriega Surrenders to the U.S.

From the History Channel…

On this day in 1990, Panama's General Manuel Antonio Noriega, after holing up for 10 days at the Vatican embassy in Panama City, surrenders to U.S. military troops to face charges of drug trafficking. Noriega was flown to Miami the following day and crowds of citizens on the streets of Panama City rejoiced. On July 10, 1992, the former dictator was convicted of drug trafficking, money laundering and racketeering and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Noriega, who was born in Panama in 1938, was a loyal soldier to General Omar Torrijos, who seized power in a 1968 coup. Under Torrijos, Noriega headed up the notorious G-2 intelligence service, which harassed and terrorized people who criticized the Torrijos regime. Noriega also became a C.I.A. operative, while at the same time getting rich smuggling drugs.

In 1981, Omar Torrijos died in a plane crash and after a two-year power struggle, Noriega emerged as general of Panama's military forces. He became the country's de facto leader, fixing presidential elections so he could install his own puppet officials. Noriega's rule was marked by corruption and violence. He also became a double agent, selling American intelligence secrets to Cuba and Eastern European governments. In 1987, when Panamanians organized protests against Noriega and demanded his ouster, he declared a national emergency, shut down radio stations and newspapers and forced his political enemies into exile.

That year the United States cut off aid to Panama and tried to get Noriega to resign; in 1988, the U.S. began considering the use of military action to put an end to his drug trafficking. Noriega voided the May 1989 presidential election, which included a U.S.-backed candidate, and in December of that year he declared his country to be in a state of war with the United States. Shortly afterward, an American marine was killed by Panamanian soldiers. President George H.W. Bush authorized "Operation Just Cause," and on December 20, 1989, 13,000 U.S. troops were sent to occupy Panama City, along with the 12,000 already there, and seize Noriega. During the invasion, 23 U.S. troops were killed in action and over 300 were wounded. Approximately 450 Panamanian troops were killed; estimates for the number of civilians who died range from several hundred to several thousand, with thousands injured.

Today, Noriega, derogatorily nicknamed "Pineapple Face" in reference to his pockmarked skin, is serving his sentence at a federal prison in Miami.

January is Rotary Awareness Month:

Frisco has two Rotary clubs and you can find contact information below if you are interested in joining. Here is a brief history of Rotary…

The world’s first service club, the

Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA,

was formed on 23 February 1905 by

Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name “Rotary” derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices.

Rotary’s popularity spread throughout

the United States in the decade that

followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later.

As Rotary grew, its mission expanded

beyond serving the professional and social interests of club members.

Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The

organization’s dedication to this ideal is

best expressed in its principal motto:

Service Above Self. Rotary also later

embraced a code of ethics, called The 4-Way Test, that has been translated into hundreds of languages.

During and after World War II,

Rotarians became increasingly involved in promoting international understanding. In 1945, 49 Rotary members served in 29 delegations to the United Nations Charter Conference. Rotary still actively participates in UN conferences by sending observers to major meetings and promoting the United Nations in Rotary publications. Rotary International’s relationship with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) dates back to a 1943 London Rotary conference that promoted international cultural and educational exchanges. Attended by ministers of education and observers from around the world, and chaired by a past president of RI, the conference was

an impetus to the establishment of

UNESCO in 1946.

An endowment fund, set up by

Rotarians in 1917 “for doing good in the

world,” became a not-for-profit corporation known as The Rotary Foundation in 1928. Upon the death of Paul Harris in 1947, an outpouring of Rotarian donations made in his honor, totaling US$2 million, launched the Foundation’s first program — graduate fellowships, now called Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Today, contributions to The Rotary

Foundation total more than US$80

million annually and support a wide

range of humanitarian grants and educational programs that enable Rotarians to bring hope and promote international understanding throughout the world.

In 1985, Rotary made a historic

commitment to immunize all of the

world’s children against polio. Working

in partnership with nongovernmental

organizations and national governments

through its PolioPlus program, Rotary is

the largest private-sector contributor to

the global polio eradication campaign.

Rotarians have mobilized hundreds of

thousands of PolioPlus volunteers and

have immunized more than one billion

children worldwide. By the 2005 target

date for certification of a polio-free

world, Rotary will have contributed half

a billion dollars to the cause.

As it approached the dawn of the

21st century, Rotary worked to meet the changing needs of society, expanding its service effort to address such pressing issues as environmental degradation, illiteracy, world hunger, and children at risk. The organization admitted women for the first time (worldwide) in 1989 and claims more than 145,000 women in its ranks today. Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Rotary clubs were formed or re-established throughout Central and

Eastern Europe. Today, 1.2 million

Rotarians belong to some 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Homeowner Association Meetings and Other Group Meetings:

If you have an upcoming meeting that you would like a city official at, just to be available to answer any questions, please let us know. If Matt’s schedule permits, he would love to attend.

Answering Questions for Kids and Young Adults:

As you know, communication and sharing information is something that I spend a lot of time doing. I frequently get asked to answer questions for kids and young adults for school projects or leadership programs. Usually the project involves getting these questions answered from somebody in a leadership position, and as a City Council member, I’m always happy to take the time to do this. If your son or daughter ever needs questions answered from a leadership figure for projects of any kind, please feel free to contact me or have them contact me directly.

Alternatively, if your child is interested in learning more about city government and has questions, feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you are looking for a speaker to talk to a group of kids or young adults about city government or Frisco in general, I’m happy to try and schedule something.

How to “Whitelist” this Frisco Community Newsletter in Your Spam Filter:

With the advent of outrageous volumes of unwanted email these days, of which I get a ton, it's unfortunate that legitimate email publications like this are not being seen by some of the readers who enjoy those publications. There is much fear today that the email publishing/marketing industry is in serious trouble, due to mistakes in filtering when legitimate email is erroneously tagged as unwanted email.

While we applaud the anti-spam industry for removing the plethora of unwanted email from many of our mailboxes, from time to time, some legitimate email publications are mistaken as unwanted.

Sometimes, this results in our mailings bouncing back, with requests for us to respond to challenge/response messages to prevent future filtering. However, due to the size of our list, it's nearly impossible for us handle the volume of such requests.

To that end, please realize that we want our readers to always anticipate and enjoy the valuable information that this community newsletter delivers.

If you currently use an anti-spam program or service, we ask that you take just a minute or two to add this newsletter to your "safe" or permitted email sender list. This usually involves simply adding our sending address (From:) to your whitelist, safelist, or list of privileged senders. This is commonly known as whitelisting a publication. Simply add the email addresses of matt@mattlafata.com and matt@mattlafatamarketing.com.

If you wish to be removed from this list, please send an email to matt@mattlafata.com.

Spotlight on… WebFratelli - Kim Green and Bill Sholar:

Bill and Kim, please tell us about your business. Who are you, and who are your customers?

Bill: WebFratelli is a partnership between two well-established Frisco firms. Small businesses needing websites and hosting, logos and banners, business card and brochure design, and Internet advertising are our primary clients.

Kim: Before we formed our partnership, we had a lot of overlap, but my business, First Source Solutions, leaned towards the graphic design and aesthetic side, and Bill, under the name WebGusto, focused on the “back end” – programming websites, hosting, and so forth. Bill is also certified by both Google and Yahoo, and helps get client websites found on the Internet.

Bill: The partnership is a great combination of skills and interests. Kim loves the artistic stuff, and I enjoy making systems and processes work well. She has been providing graphic design services since graduating from the Art Institute in the late 80’s, and I developed and managed computer projects and computer centers since the late 1960s. Our business card taglines say it all. Kim’s side says “I make it look great” and my side says “I make it work great.”

With the number of web services companies in this area, please tell us more about what’s unique or different about your business?

Kim: For one thing, we tie together all the pieces of a company’s “identity” – from their logo to their brochure to their website to their Internet advertising.

Bill: We also do something completely unique in website design and maintenance. We create complete custom websites with all of the creative design that clients expect in such a website, and provide our clients with a toolkit that allows them to maintain, update, and customize their site with no skills needed beyond using a mouse.

Our clients can change text, add pictures and pages, even change the layout if they wish. We even registered a federal trademark, “Websites under your control,” for this service.

Kim: Clients that don’t have the time or inclination to update their sites still just send us their changes, and we manage it for them, the same as with any other website.

I have some history with both of you. Kim did my mayoral campaign logos, and is working on new graphics for the HRchitect site. I had Bill convert my campaign website so I could add pages and change text myself. It was so easy to make updates that I had him do the same thing for the HRchitect site as well. In fact, Erika and I developed a website from scratch using your toolkit, to pass along information about our wedding. Do most of your clients have you do 100% of the initial site, like you did for my campaign site?

Bill: Most clients have us set up their site so it is fully presentable to the public, even if they plan additions later. It hasn’t been all that uncommon for that site to be just a single page to start, and the client has later added dozens of pages themselves, or sends us additions to make for them.

Kim: That’s the beauty of this approach. With this toolkit or our update service, our clients can do as much or as little as they want. Bill and I want to enable our clients to “focus on their business and let us focus on their online and print marketing needs”.

How much is your toolkit, and how much extra does a website like this cost?

Bill: The toolkit is free to our clients, and they don’t have to install anything. It’s installed on our servers, so it’s always up to date, and clients just use it whenever they want, from any computer that can get to the Internet.

Kim: Sites we develop using the toolkit usually cost 10-20% less than sites developed using other approaches, so we are doing almost all new sites that way.

This is the part of the spotlight where people get to know a little more about you. I usually ask about food, but your business name, WebFratelli, intrigues me. Where did that come from?

Kim: And we were all set to answer the food question!  Our first “official” meeting was at Kotta Sushi Lounge, and our business planning meetings usually take place somewhere that serves sushi. We are sushi fiends!

Bill: The name of our partnership is a play off a misunderstanding, and we have just never let it die. When we were just starting to work together on a trial basis, our first joint customer somehow got the idea that we were brother and sister, which we thought was a hoot. As the partnership solidified and we decided we needed a name for it, we thought that we'd see if there was some catchy word that played off the "brother and sister" theme, and found "fratelli" which is Italian for brothers and sisters.  The alternative was αμφιθαλείς (Greek), 兄弟 (Japanese), or 형제자매 (Korean). But we couldn't pronounce those. Are we Italian? No, but we like spaghetti (when sushi isn’t an option).

Maybe I will get the answers to your favorite restaurants in a future interview. In any event, how does someone find you?  Online at www.WebFratelli.com. We are regulars at the Frisco Chamber of Commerce Thursday morning meetings. We meet with local clients at their place of business or other convenient meeting spots. People can reach  Kim at 972-377-8237, Bill at 469-252-0102, or leave a message for either of us at 866-640-1234. They can also send an email to info@webfratelli.com.

Visit Water Smarter at the Frisco House and Garden Show:

Many of you know that I am a huge fan of conserving water and ensuring we have an adequate supply for years to come. While you are at the show, be sure and stop by the Water Smarter Booth # 713. Water Smarter is a new Frisco business owned by Frisco residents Jennifer and J.P. Dyal. They are selling a product every household in Frisco needs...an ET controller. You've heard of them from the city and I have featured these before. You can also read more about it here. You get a $100 rebate if you buy and register it and now Water Smarter is making it easy for you to pick one up. Just visit Booth #713 - Water Smarter, at the Frisco House and Garden Show this weekend. (They joined late so they are not in the show directory, so you might jot it down.) It's a weather-based sprinkler controller that replaces your existing controller. It reads the weather and adjusts your watering. No more waste. Good for the environment. Go see them! Help Frisco avoid the next drought.
